SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police said a man who was trying to sell basketball tickets Friday robbed a victim near San Diego State University as the NCAA basketball tournament was underway.The robbery happened about 11 a.m. in the east alley of 5100 College Ave., police said. The location is behind the ARCO gas station at the corner of Montezuma Rd.Officers said the suspect stole the victim’s money and may have been carrying a small knife. The victim was not hurt.The suspect ran toward the Aztec Student Union and was last seen near Campanile Drive.Police said the suspect is a black man in his late teens, about six-feet tall and 120 pounds. He was wearing a gray beanie, gray sweatpants, a red hoodie, and red Jordan sneakers. 748

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Saturday night, the Padres will welcome back one of the most iconic characters in franchise history.The Famous San Diego Chicken will return to Petco Park as part of the team's 50th anniversary celebration."It's like coming back and seeing family again," says Ted Giannoulas, the man behind the mascot. "It's great. These fans put me on the map. It was their laughter, their good faith over the decades that launched my unique career."The Chicken started in 1974 as a radio station mascot. Over the years, his popularity grew, turning the San Diego favorite in a national phenomenon.But it's been 10 years since the Chicken ruled the roost at a Padres game. The team decided their anniversary season was the right time to welcome him home."As you look back through our 50 year history, it was a piece of our story that we thought really needed to be told this year," says Marketing Director Wayne Partello.As part of the Chicken's return, the team will give away a San Diego Chicken bobble head to every fan at Saturday's game."It's the spitting image of me," says the Chicken, who partnered with the team to make sure they got every detail right, down to the coloring on individual feathers.The Chicken will also sign autographs and take pictures with fans throughout the game. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Since a movie theater was first added to Horton Plaza in 1985, San Diegans downtown have had cinema options at their fingertips.That is, until the plaza fell on tough times, as business slowed and patrons gained more options for retail and entertainment downtown.The trend has now reached the plaza's Regal movie theater, which closed its doors this year. A sign posted on the entrance of the theater says the location was to close on Jan. 27.Since then, Regal Theaters says theater-goers should visit the next closest location — Rancho Del Rey — to redeem discounted tickets or gift cards.RELATED: Plans for Horton Plaza mall reveal tech campus, retail revitalizationThe departure of the theater heralds the next phase planned for the once iconic shopping center, as only a few businesses remain.Plans revealed last year show real estate firm Stockdale Capital Partners, which has purchased the property in 2018, has other ideas. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego’s unemployment rate fell to 2.9 percent in April, the lowest rate yet in this century.1,577,000 people were part of the San Diego labor force last month, according to the California Employment Development Department.Only 46,200 people did not have jobs.California’s unemployment rate was at 4.2 percent in April, the lowest level since 1976.San Francisco and Marin Counties had the lowest unemployment rate of 2.1 percent.The highest unemployment rates were in Colusa County, at 15 percent, and Imperial County, at 14.4 percent. 565
