BEIJING, Aug. 31(Xinhua) -- China has cracked 278,000 criminal cases and broken up nearly 1,650 mafia-style gangs since it launched a campaign to maintain public security in rural-urban fringe zones and on campuses in January.About 256,000 suspects had been arrested as of Tuesday, according to a national working group on maintaining public security composed of officials from government agencies, including the Central Commission for Political and Legal Affairs of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Ministry of Public Security.Investigating and rectifying public security threats remains an arduous task, said Wang Lequan, deputy secretary of the Commission.The government will maintain its "strike hard" policy against mafia-style gangs, crimes involving guns and explosives, gambling, prostitution and drugs, Wang said. Authorities have "zero-tolerance" for such crimes, he added.

CAIRO, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese and Egyptian industry officials vowed closer bilateral economic ties on Sunday with the signing of an industrial cooperation agreement.Egyptian Minister of Trade and Industry Rachid Mohamed Rachid met with Chinese Minister of Industry and Information Technology Li Yizhong. Both talked about the expansion and improvement of bilateral trade and economic cooperation.Rachid told reporters that he hoped the new agreement would pave the way for more cooperation in different industry sectors including manufacturing of cars components, textiles, petrochemicals, electronics and technology."This agreement includes the process of sharing technology and increasing investment in the industrial sector and training of workers as well as helping Egyptian companies promote their products in the Chinese markets," said the Egyptian minister.The agreement also included the formation of an Egyptian- Chinese task force that takes the responsibility of sharing information and experiments in the industrial sectors and encouraging Egyptian and Chinese firms to establish joint ventures in different areas of cooperation, according to Rachid.Rachid said that Egypt wanted to benefit from the successful Chinese experience in the industrial sector.Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif also met with the Chinese minister. The prime minister said Egypt shows great interest in boosting cooperation with China.The bilateral trade between Egypt and China increased from 3 billion U.S. dollars in 2006 to 6.24 billion dollars in 2008, according to Chinese Ambassador to Egypt Wu Chunhua.By the end of last year, Chinese investment in Egypt exceeded 500 million U.S. dollars. BEIJING, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- China's primary energy consumption will be kept to between 4 to 4.2 billion tonnes of standard coal by 2015, Jiang Bing, director of the development and planning department of the National Energy Administration (NEA), said on Saturday.Jiang made the remarks at a forum held by the energy research institute of the State Grid Corporation of China.Primary energy refers to existing natural energy which does not need processing, such as fossil fuels, nuclear fuels, biomass energy, hydropower, wind power, solar power and others.As China has adopted a low-carbon development strategy, the country plans to raise the non-fossil energies ratio in its total primary energy consumption to 15 percent by 2020, and carbon dioxide emissions per GDP would be reduced by 40 to 45 percent by 2020 from 2005 levels, Jiang said.Thus, primary energy consumption must be kept to below 4.2 billion tonnes in the next five-year plan (2011-2015) to achieve the two targets, Jiang said.China's per capita energy consumption now stands at 2.5 tonnes standard coal per capita and, if left uncontrolled, China might see its energy consumption top 7 billion tonnes of standard coal in 2030, Jiang said.However, he explained that despite the huge total amounts, the per capita energy consumption would only be equivalent to current levels in Japan.Thus, the nation's economic growth mode transformation is quite necessary and it would be a strategic choice for China to control its total energy consumption in the 15 years, Jiang said.China's primary energy consumption topped 3.07 billion tonnes of standard coal in 2009, up 30 percent from 2005, according to the NEA.

BEIJING, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- China will launch a new national campaign to crack down on violations of intellectual property rights (IPRs) and on the production and distribution of fake and shoddy products.The decision was made at a regular meeting of the State Council Tuesday, which was presided over by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao. The campaign will last for half a year, beginning from the end of October.The campaign will target pirated publications, software products, DVDs, designs and other products with IPRs, as well as violations of registered trademarks and patents, both at the production and distribution levels.The campaign will also enhance China's scrutiny over the import and export of fake goods and mete out stern punishment to businesses involved in the import and export of such goods.The campaign will target Internet piracy and the sale of pirated and fake goods via the Internet.Additionally, the State Council directed all government agencies to purchase only authorized software and their upgraded versions.At the Tuesday meeting, a draft regulation on gas use in urban areas was also passed in a bid to secure gas supplies and eliminate safety risks.
