Almost immediately, Kate was hooked. She'd seen advertisements for the hit Netflix series "13 Reasons Why" and heard that some friends were watching it, so she gave it a try."Within one or two episodes, I was completely hooked and was super into it and felt really emotionally involved in it," she said."And, so I, essentially, sped through the whole show ... which is not easy to do when you are working and also going to school. But I ended up doing it." 464

A wildfire burning in Arizona, just northeast of the Valley, is now the most massive fire actively burning in the country, according to officials. The wildfire has already demolished more than 114,000 acres, and it is just five percent contained, as of Thursday morning. The good news is no homes nor businesses have been destroyed, but some worry it is just a matter of time, as evacuations have been implemented in multiple towns.Fire crews say the wildfire has spread so rapidly and is difficult to contain because of the heat, low humidity, terrain, and high winds. The threat snuck up on Tonto Basin homeowners like Robyn Hill."I really wasn’t prepared for it. I thought the fire was too far away, and you are just kind of in disbelief," said Hill, who got the evacuation order Monday.Hill said she rushed home from her hair salon business in Payson once the alert came across her phone. She packed up the RV with her husband and two dogs, and they quickly left town."So when you got two hours to get your stuff and go. It would help if you were a little more prepared," she said. "I packed the bread and the peanut butter, but forgot the jelly."While the jelly makes for a good joke, leaving home was no laughing matter."You kind of shed a few tears as you leave the house because it’s my home, it’s my little paradise," said Hill, who tells KNXV she had just finished adding a pool and re-doing her garden and yard during the pandemic slowdown. While Hill and others are evacuating their homes, the Red Cross has been setting up shelters."[Monday] we had over a dozen people check-in," said Jim Gilloon, with the Arizona Red Cross. "We don’t just let them walk in. We do a screen test, we take their temperature, and we ask him questions, and then they are clear to come in."At the shelter, the people forced from their homes can get a meal, information, and then the Red Cross helps find them a place to stay for the night."It’s a wildfire season. So we are prepared," said Gilloon. "The fire is spreading, and there is no containment. So we are looking at several days, a week maybe."Many Arizonans from Punkin Center, Sunflower, and Apache Lake are now sleeping in motels.Casie Malinski though, stayed behind in her Tonto Basin home Tuesday to care for her many animals."This morning I took my older children into Payson and dropped them off with their things," said Malinski. "I have full faith in our hotshots and fire crews who are out here."As 440 firefighters desperately try to squelch the inferno, hundreds more are praying for them."I think everybody is just terrified and hoping they will get it out in time before the residences are lost," said Hill. "Let’s stop it on the highway, please. And before the homes."State Route 87, or the Beeline Highway, is closed from Payson to Bush Highway.State Route 188 is also closed from the 87 junctions to Roosevelt.Fire officials say the fire started due to a car issue on the side of the highway.KNXV's Zach Crenshaw first reported this story. 3008

Adopting a child from another country can take years. For some families, the pandemic added even more waiting time as countries shut down. However, as travel opens back up, agencies are finding ways to help families complete their adoptions, like the adoption of Maria Camila in Colombia.“For most of the summer, we were waiting for just word we were able to travel to Columbia. Just waiting for them to open up,” Seth Christensen said. Seth and Gwen Christensen live in the U.S. with their three children. They started the process of adopting another child years ago, and just this October, they were able to travel to Colombia and bring her home.“That was a stressful time but we made it. We made it to Columbia,” Gwen said.We interviewed Seth and Gwen back in May, right after they went to Colombia for two weeks in March to adopt Maria Camila. However, they had to return to the U.S. without her due to COVID-19 and government closures.“Everything was just going swimmingly until, sorry they shut down all the courts in the whole country,” they explained back in May. “We had to send her back to her group home and it was awful. But she was old enough, she kind of understood, we cried and she was like OK.”So they waited, talking with their adopted daughter over FaceTime all summer until October, when they were invited back into Colombia to complete the process.“It was a complete do over. All the fees, all the appeals, everything,” Gwen explained. “But we got through faster than some families did.”“There were so many parents going through the system at that point than is normal that everyone was just overwhelmed,” Seth said about their most recent experience in the country. Due to the delay time, many families took the first chance they could get to return and finish adoptions.Seth and Gwen spent a month in Colombia, finalizing documents to bring Maria Camila back to the U.S. It's a process Gwen said usually would take less than three weeks, but for them took two separate trips.“There has been a backlog on the travel piece,” said Hollen Frazier, President at All God's Children International. The agency facilitates adoptions from a number of countries, including the adoption of Maria Camila. While the process is slower right now due to countries catching up, quarantine periods and other processes, she said adopted kids from most countries are finally getting home.“In the last six months we’ve seen kids come home from Bulgaria, Haiti, Columbia,” she said. Except for those from China. “All of our families from China, they’re all still stuck. Completely stuck,” Frazier explained. Most countries are finding ways to complete the adoption process safely after many were put on hold all summer. “Because there were so many other families around it definitely helps to kind of see other people in the same situation,” Seth said. After a long wait, Maria Camila now lives in the U.S. with her new siblings. “They’ve been excited to meet her and play with her and introduce her to things,” Seth said. The 12-year-old 6th grader started school this month. “She just started online school this week and that’s an adventure,” Gwen said. 3159

A worldwide study of the coronavirus released in the journal Cell indicates that the dominant strand of COVID-19 is causing the virus to spread faster. But the study’s authors said that even though the coronavirus is able to spread faster, the virus is no more or less severe than earlier in the outbreak. The study’s authors indicate that the virus has mutated, and that the Spike protein amino acid D614G has become the virus’ dominant strand.“Our global tracking data show that the G614 variant in Spike has spread faster than D614. We interpret this to mean that the virus is likely to be more infectious,” study author Bette Korber of Los Alamos National Laboratory. The federal government’s leading infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci addressed concerns that the virus could be more contagious in an interview with The Journal of the American Medical Association on Thursday.“The data is showing there’s a single mutation that makes the virus be able to replicate better and maybe have high viral loads,” Dr. Fauci said. “We don’t have a connection to whether an individual does worse with this or not; it just seems that the virus replicates better and may be more transmissible.”Korbe explained in the study how the dominant strand of the virus differs from earlier variants.“In infected individuals G614 is associated with lower RTPCR cycle thresholds, suggestive of higher upper respiratory tract viral loads, although not with increased disease severity,” Korbe said. “These findings illuminate changes important for a mechanistic understanding of the virus, and support continuing surveillance of Spike mutations to aid in the development of immunological interventions.”To read the full study, click here. 1731
