BEIJING, March 17 (Xinhuanet) -- A new study has shown that gene therapy can reduce symptoms in patients with Parkinson's, media reports said Thursday.The study, published in the journal Lancet Neurology, is the first to show positive results in a test of gene therapy against a sham operation in 45 U.S. Parkinson's patients.The treated group showed a 23.1 percent improvement on a scale of Parkinson's symptoms six months after treatment, compared to a 12.7 percent improvement for patients who received sham surgery, according to the published research."Gene therapy is no longer just a theory," said Michael Kaplitt, a neurosurgeon at New York-Presbyterian Hospital and Weill Cornell Medical Center, and one of the study authors. "We are getting much closer to a reality where this treatment can be offered to patients."In patients with Parkinson's disease, their brains get overactive after losing the normal supply of a chemical called GABA. The new treatment, gene therapy, works by inserting billions of copies of a gene into patients' brains that helps them produce more GABA.Kaplitt said the results might spur similar treatments for other brain disorders like Alzheimer's, epilepsy and depression.

SAN FRANCISCO, April 25 (Xinhua) -- Oracle Corp. on Monday announced that its co-president Safra Catz is taking the additional position as the software giant's chief financial officer (CFO), following the resignation of its current CFO Jeff Epstein.Epstein was named Oracle's CFO in September 2008, and had reported directly to Catz. Oracle didn't give details about Epstein's departure.Catz joined Oracle in April 1999 and has been its president since January 2004. WASHINGTON, May 17 (Xinhua) -- A variation in a gene involved in regulating cholesterol in the bloodstream also appears to affect progesterone production in women, making it a likely culprit in a substantial number of cases of their infertility, a new study from Johns Hopkins University researchers suggests.The Hopkins group has also developed a simple blood test for this variation of the scavenger receptor class B type 1 gene ( SCARB1) but emphasized there is no approved therapy yet to address the problem in infertile women.Following up studies in female mice that first linked a deficiency in these receptors for HDL -- the so-called "good" or " healthy" cholesterol -- and infertility, researchers report finding the same link in studies of women with a history of infertility.The findings has been published on-line this week in the journal Human Reproduction.If the new study's findings hold up on further investigation, the John Hopkins team says they not only will offer clues into a genetic cause of some infertility, but could also lead to a treatment already shown to work in mice."Infertility is fairly common and a lot of the reasons for it are still unknown," warns endocrinologist Annabelle Rodriguez, an associate professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the lead author. "Right now, the benefit of this research is in knowing that there might be a genetic reason for why some women have difficulty getting pregnant. BEIJING, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Agriculture on Wednesday urged more measures be taken to minimize the impact of a drought due to the possibility that the winter drought may continue into spring.The country's winter wheat producing regions have suffered severe drought since October last year, and the possibility of spring drought is surfacing, Minister of Agriculture Han Changfu said in a statement posted on the ministry's website.Spring drought following the winter one will be a significant threat to summer grain production, he said.As of Wednesday, the drought had affected about 115.95 million mu (7.73 million hectares) of winter wheat in the country's eight key producing provinces, which account for 42.4 percent of the total winter wheat growing areas in the regions, the statement said.China's main wheat growing regions include the provinces of Shandong, Henan, Hubei, Anhui, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Gansu and Jiangsu.Han urged agricultural authorities to be "fully aware of the extreme significance" of a summer harvest this year and strengthen their efforts to assure a successful harvest.Summer grain and oil production is crucial to easing inflation pressures and stabilizing grain output for the entire year, he said.
