Across the country, more states are legalizing marijuana.Now, more people are opening up about getting high and getting behind the wheel.“I feel more focused than when I’m sober,” Caleb Occelin said of driving while under the influence of marijuana. “It eases my mind. It makes me focus on everything.”Others, however, say they know better than to mix cars and cannabis. “Do not smoke weed and drive,” said marijuana smoker Sam Lee. “We all know we can barely think straight instead of drive.”Now, a team of medical professionals is studying the dangers of smoking and driving.“There’s been increasing concern about the potential of public health impacts of people using cannabis while they drive or shortly after,” said Dr. Michael Kosnett of the University of Colorado Denver.Kosnett is teaming up with Rocky Mountain Poison and Drug Safety on a study about the effects of cannabis while operating a motor vehicle.This study tests three focus groups: daily smokers, occasional smokers and non-smokers as they go through tests measuring reaction times, hand-eye coordination and short-term memory.More than a year into the study, the team has hit an unexpected road block: they can’t seem to find occasional smokers.“As for people who just used it occasionally, like on a weekly basis, that was probably less than one-fourth of the people,” Kosnett said.This study is still in process. Kosnett has not yet released the findings.Denver Police Sgt. Alan Ma, however, doesn’t need to know the results. He says he knows from working his nightly beat that driving high is dangerous.“Their perception and reaction times are delayed,” Ma said about people who drive while high on marijuana. A patient at Seattle Children's Hospital has died from a mold infection.The patient was one of six to develop an infection from 2018-2019, according to Alyse Bernal, public relations manager for the hospital.The infections follow several operating rooms being shut down in May by the detection of Aspergillus mold in the air. The hospital said that the risk to patients was low, but that it was contacting those who might have been exposed.The Children's Hospital patient died after developing an Aspergillus infection in 2018, Bernal said. Details about the patient and the case have not been shared for the sake of privacy.Gaps in air filtration is believed to have been key in the presence of mold, Bernal said. While the hospital works with outside industrial hygienists to clear the rooms of Aspergillus contamination, all 14 of the hospital's main operating rooms remain closed, Bernal said."We are systematically implementing improvements and corrective actions, and then retesting the air to validate our efforts have been effective. It is difficult to predict when we will be able to safely resume operations but our patients' safety is our priority and we will reopen our operating rooms when we are confident they are safe for patient care," Bernal said.Aspergillus is a common mold that most people breathe without getting sick but that poses a greater risk to those with weakened immune systems or lung disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "It was big, really big," said Schultz, who captured images of the alligator. "I was totally in panic. When I saw the alligator I was scared."Schultz said she’s lived in Marlwood Estates for three years and has only seen a gator there once before. She said the an alligator was spotted in a lake last year behind her property.Schultz, a mother of three, thinks the gator in the pool was likely 9 feet long and over 300 pounds."It totally concerns me. So now I’m scared and I don’t want to leave my kids outside playing in the backyard," said Schultz.
