A school district in Louisiana has acknowledged that some of its customs and practices, including sponsoring morning prayer over the public address system, have violated the First Amendment.The admission comes as part of a consent decree agreed upon by the district, Christy Cole and her daughter, Kaylee. The Coles sued in January?after saying they'd had enough of what they called forced prayer in school. In their lawsuit, they alleged the Webster Parish School District engaged in a systematic, official promotion of religion.The consent decree does not have any impact beyond Webster Parish, but ACLU lawyer Bruce Hamilton said it sets a precedent for how schools act with regards to prayer and religious proselytizing."This really is the wake-up calling and a warning shot to other school districts ... that they can't get away with it without violating the Constitution," said Hamilton, who worked with the Cole family on the lawsuit.The lawsuit sparked deep reflection and frustration in Webster Parish. Faith is deeply personal, but it's also interwoven with everything in the town.It's common to see a large cross in the front yard of a house. Seven churches dominate the two main roads in the town of Minden. A sign advertises a pest control business with a nod to a Bible verse: John 3:16. Sheriff's cruisers and ambulances proclaim, "In God We Trust."When you ask residents if they can separate God from their daily lives, you get a resounding "No."Which is why Christy Cole felt it was important to ensure her daughter, an agnostic, was not being forced into public prayer."For our family, religion is a deeply private matter, and school officials have no business interfering with my daughter's personal religious beliefs," Christy Cole said in response to the consent decree. "I don't want any student to have to go through what my daughter did, and I'm hopeful that because of this agreement, no student will."Prayer over the loudspeaker each morning was just the beginning of an unconstitutional indoctrination of students promoted and supported by teachers, the principal, the superintendent and the school board, the Coles claimed in their lawsuit."Virtually all school events -- such as sports games, pep rallies, assemblies, and graduation ceremonies -- include school-sponsored Christian prayer, religious messages and/or proselytizing," read the lawsuit.The school district acknowledged some of these actions in the consent decree, concurring they had violated the First Amendment's Establishment Clause, which forbids governments from making laws "respecting an establishment of religion."Among those policies and practices: 2662

A Nevada Sheriff has taken to Facebook to apologize after leaving her gun in the bathroom of a casino.Nye County Sheriff Sharon Wehrly left her Glock .45 in a restroom toilet stall last week at Saddle West, a hotel, casino and RV Park in Pahrump.Casino General Manager Gregg Schatzman confirmed there was a weapon recovered last week in the bathroom by a porter who was cleaning. He said the porter turned it over to security, who then turned it over to him where it was locked up until the sheriff reclaimed it.Wehrly believes the incident happened last Tuesday or Wednesday but could not confirm which day she left her gun behind. She said she was only separated from her gun for about 10 minutes. She realized it was missing and went back to the restaurant where she'd been having lunch. She says she never left the building."It's a big responsibility to have a firearm and an even bigger responsibility to make sure it's kept in a safe environment all the time. However, people are human and mistakes happen," Wehrly said. "A gun is a tool, and we should always keep track of our tools. I was remiss in this case because I was on the phone dealing with an emergency. I was blessed that someone responsible found it."Schatzman added that there's always a concern when a weapon is left in a restroom. He said leaving a gun, especially a duty weapon, is very, very serious."There was a hole and fortunately we picked it up and so we're in good shape," Schatzman said.He emphasized his high regard for the Nye County Sheriff's Office and their quick response time whenever the casino needs them.Wehrly admitted that this is not the first time she's left her gun behind, though the others, she says, were in the distant past.She recalled a 1984 incident where she left her gun at the U.S. Department of Energy headquarters in Mercury and ended up working an entire shift without it. A preschool teacher was arrested on Wednesday after deputies say admitted to biting a 2-year-old student on the face.Heather Marcotte, 28, has been arrested on a charge of felony cruelty to a juvenile in Louisiana.The mother of a 2-year-old student called the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office saying that when she picked her son up from school, she noticed the bite mark on his cheek.The mother said an administrator at the school informed her that her son’s teacher reported that she left the mark on the child "when her mouth accidentally hit his face" and that the teacher had been terminated following the incident, according to the Sheriff's office.Marcotte admitted to deputies that she bit the child after she became frustrated and agitated with his behavior. A mother in Clarksville, Tennessee has been charged after the death of her 4-month-old daughter.Officials said they responded to a home in the 200 block of Orleans Drive after 11:30 a.m. Saturday on a call of an unresponsive child.Officers found the 4-month-old not breathing. They performed CPR, and the baby was taken to Tennova Hospital where she failed to regain consciousness and passed away.Detectives investigated the infant’s death leading to a criminal homicide charge against the baby’s mother, 25-year-old Sarah Danielle Scribner.A witness, identified in a police affidavit as Aeriel Shiraef, told authorities Scribner called her and said she'd done something bad. Scribner allegedly told Shiraef she had stopped the baby from crying by putting her hand over the infant's mouth. She added the infant was no longer breathing.Scribner was booked into the Montgomery County Jail.  916
