SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego winemakers say business is picking up, and there's a new way to for locals to get their foot in the door. A new report by the San Diego County Vintners Association says there are now 116 wineries in the region, with sales nearly doubling in the last year. The industry now has about 700 workers in the county. Now, the association has teamed up with Cuyamaca College for a Viticulture Technician Apprenticeship program. Participants work 1,500 hours a year, learning the ins and outs of winemaking. They earn an hour the first year and the second, with opportunities to make more doing side jobs once they get enough experience. "You can't really sell wine unless you know where it's coming from and what goes into it, creating the story behind the wine itself," said Kaylan Wedemeyer, who is an apprentice for La Mesa's San Pasqual Winery.Linda McWilliams, who owns San Pasqual, said many local wineries are mom and pops, but that apprentices can also grow with them."I think we'll find places for the people who graduate, and then we'll build together," she said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- School grades have been a sensitive topic between parents and their kids for as long most can probably remember.Whether you agree with a report card or not – it's used as a sign of academic performance or to highlight areas that may need improvement.With school back in session, most from a distance, teachers across California are trying to figure out how to properly measure students' learning.Back in March, when stay at home orders were announced, some school districts shifted from the traditional A to F system to credit/no credit grading."Many of them did look to what the universities were asking and what would be in the best interest of students in that before they made a decision," said Dina Wilson, division director at the Los Angeles County Office of EducationThat was five months ago and a temporary measure.A new school year is underway, and each district's current approach to grading could have an impact on students' future and finances."We want to make sure we're doing right by our kids," said San Diego County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Paul Gothold. "We don't want our kids to be at a disadvantage when they start to apply for colleges."Gothold has a strong opinion on how grading should be handled this school year."Letter grades need to be the default practice," he said.The San Diego County Office of Education provides its recommendations, but they don't have to be implemented by local districts.Gothold said while the education system needs to figure out a way to hold students harmless for learning challenges, moving away from a traditional grading system could have long-term impacts."We are putting our kids at a disadvantage if they're applying for schools nationally," he said. "Not every college, not every institution is even accepting pass/fail or credit/no credit. We've seen this in some of the art schools across the country where kids have applied and have been told they aren't going to recognize those grades."There's also the issue of grant money and scholarships.Gothold said credit/no credit had an impact on some student's finances."Kids that needed a 3.0 to qualify for Cal Grant, for those that were on track to get As and Bs to boost their GPA the second semester of their senior year, some were shut out and not eligible for that funding that they so desperately needed and deserved because of pass-fail credit/no credit," he said.Reporter Adam Racusin asked a handful of the state's largest schools what type of grading system they're using this academic year. All who responded said they were using a traditional A through F system.Back in March, the University of California implemented temporary measures which relax undergraduate admissions requirements for students looking to enroll at UC for fall 2020 and future years as applicable. According to the UC system, these measures will help mitigate some of the extraordinary challenges students and their families face in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.A spokesperson for the California State University said they relaxed some undergraduate admissions standards for both newly admitted students and prospective students to account for changes in grading and administration of standardized tests. 3238

Now some companies are helping their workers tackle the mounting debt, offering student loan assistance as a benefit.Fidelity Investments is one company leading the way with its Step Ahead Student Loan Assistance program. “We look at our jobs day-to-day and we try and figure out how we can help people make the right financial decisions in their lives and it was something holding back some of our folks here at Fidelity," said Jared Roethlisberger, a Fidelity Branch Manager in Mission Valley. "They couldn’t save for retirement or they were working on saving for that home, and this allows us, Fidelity, to help those associates be able to take a little bit more home in their pocket."Employees who’ve been with the company for at least six months are eligible for ,000 a year toward their student loans up to ,000.RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Bill would help employers aid employees in paying off student loansFidelity started offering the benefit in 2016 and more than 9,300 employees have saved over million in principal and interest. According to data from Fidelity's website, 86 percent of young people would commit to their employer for five years if they helped pay off their student loans. More than 55 companies are now making plans to offer the program and there are 10,000 active participants. Some companies are also getting creative, like providing an option to transfer carry-over paid time off (PTO) into a payment against student debt.Despite Fidelity's success, few businesses overall are offering this benefit. A 2018 survey by the Society for Human Resource Management found only 4 percent of organizations offered financial aid to help employees repay student loans, the same as in 2017. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Sector Border Patrol Chief Rodney Scott took 10News on a tour of the U.S.-Mexico border Friday to explain what works - and what doesn’t - for his department. 10News asked Scott about the impact of the government shutdown on Border Patrol agents. As of Dec. 22, the group is among those working without pay. Scott said both border security and the morale of the people who work for him will be challenged if the shutdown gets drawn out. Politicians continue to fight over funding for a border wall and lost in the bickering may be the language. President Trump continues to fight for “a wall.” And yet, earlier this week his Chief of Staff John Kelly told the Los Angeles Times that the idea of a solid concrete wall was abandoned early in the administration. Wall, fence, whatever you want to call it, no one knows what’s needed most for border security than border agents themselves. RELATED: Six takeaways: President Trump talks shutdown, the wall, San Diego borderDuring our crew’s tour with Chief Scott, we witnessed migrants crossing illegally over an outdated fence. "So, on January 1, this wire was not here either," said Scott. He pointed to a section of an old, outdated border fence made of steel slats once used as runway mats for the military. Scott tried to make his case that no matter what happens in Washington D.C., his agents are the ones in the real fight. RELATED: San Diego lawmakers respond to Trump's border wall comments"On January 1 the people throwing rocks were up on top of that berm," said Scott, pointing to an area where migrants had high ground on his border agents. Scott gave our crew a tour of where the most recent confrontation took place with migrants trying to cross the border. He said his agents had to use tear gas after rocks were thrown from Mexico and claimed assaults on his agents are up 300 percent this fiscal year. Scott confirmed one of his agents was hit in the face with a rock. “But he had a riot helmet and shield on, so he wasn't seriously injured,” Scott said. RELATED: Trump says he may build wall without Congressional approvalThe biggest problem, Scott said, is the outdated and ineffective fence. In some cases, there is no way for his agents to see who's on the other side and if they pose a danger. And while Congress and the White House argue over a border wall, Scott and his agents at least have a small saving grace. "All of this, that you have here, is just within the last couple of weeks? This was in the last week," said Scott, proudly pointing out a new portion of fence. The new replacement fence was funded before President Trump came into office and was shown to our crew by Border Patrol for the first time. Eventually it will be 14 miles long, and 18 feet high on average, even taller in other areas. And for Border Patrol agents, it’s a game changer in border security. This new fence has concrete that runs 6 feet below the surface, so migrants are unable to dig under the fence. Steel bollards, encased in concrete, are separated by mere inches allowing agents to see what's on the other side. In some areas, the wall is 30 feet high. That's a significant upgrade from other areas of the outdated fence where human traffickers can cut through the metal. RELATED: TSA screeners, working without pay, calling out sick at major airports during shutdown"On average there's 3 and a half breaches in this per day," said Chief Scott, indicating patches in the fence that have been sawed through. "To jump the legacy landing mat fence, run up and start a cut in this fence big enough that you can actually get people through, is less than 2 minutes total time." As Scott spoke with 10News, three migrants jumped the old fence, but had no desire to cut through the secondary fence and escape. They quickly surrendered to a Border Patrol agent. "When that happens there is a high probability that they are going to claim asylum,” said Scott. “What that really means is that they just cut the line in front of a couple of thousand people that are doing it right and are waiting at the port of entry." 4106
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police said a man who was trying to sell basketball tickets Friday robbed a victim near San Diego State University as the NCAA basketball tournament was underway.The robbery happened about 11 a.m. in the east alley of 5100 College Ave., police said. The location is behind the ARCO gas station at the corner of Montezuma Rd.Officers said the suspect stole the victim’s money and may have been carrying a small knife. The victim was not hurt.The suspect ran toward the Aztec Student Union and was last seen near Campanile Drive.Police said the suspect is a black man in his late teens, about six-feet tall and 120 pounds. He was wearing a gray beanie, gray sweatpants, a red hoodie, and red Jordan sneakers. 748
