BOSTON, Mass. – A statue of Christopher Columbus was beheaded in Boston.A WHDH photographer discovered the vandalism at Christopher Columbus Park on Atlantic Avenue shortly after midnight on Wednesday.WHDH reports that the same statue was vandalized with red paint and the phrase “Black Lives Matter” in 2015. And in 2006, the head was broken off and went missing for six days before it was put back on, WHDH says.The city’s mayor, Marty Walsh, told WBZ-TV that the statue will be put in storage and there will be conversations about the “historic meaning” of the incident and whether it will ever go back up.This Massachusetts statue is one of many that have been vandalized, taken down or destroyed amid the ongoing protests over racial justice following the death of George Floyd.Another statue of Christopher Columbus in Richmond, Virginia, was torn down by protesters, set on fire and then thrown into a lake on Tuesday night, WTVR reports.In other states, there’s a renewed movement to remove confederate statues and monuments, which some say glorify the Civil War-era South. Statues were recently removed from Indianapolis and Jacksonville.And in Richmond, the former capitol of the Confederacy, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam has announced plans to remove a statue of Confederate General Robert E. I want you to know exactly where we are with our discussions with the Big 3 leadership and protecting our members and their facilities during this international crisis.I announced this past Sunday that the International UAW had formed a COVID-19/Coronavirus task force with GM, Ford and FCA to implement enhanced protections for manufacturing and warehouse employees at all three companies.I want to be very transparent about what happened during our conversation Sunday with the Big 3. The UAW leadership, based on the World Health Organization (WHO) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations on how to protect ourselves and our communities, requested a two-week shutdown of operations to safeguard our members, our families and our communities. Your UAW leadership feels very strongly, and argued very strongly, that this is the most responsible course of action.The companies, however, were not willing to implement this request. They asked for 48 hours to put together plans to safeguard workers in their facilities. (Ford Motor Company has indicated this week that they are willing to rotate down shifts and are planning to shut down all European operations next week.)The 48-hour window is up this afternoon. We will be evaluating what the companies submit today and there will be a meeting this evening at 6 p.m., where the Task Force will review plans for the safety and health of all members, their families and our communities.I want to be very clear here: If the UAW leadership on the task force, myself and Vice Presidents Cindy Estrada, Terry Dittes and Gerald Kariem, are not satisfied that our members will be protected, we will take this conversation to the next level.These companies will be put on notice that the UAW will use any and all measures to protect our brothers and sisters who are working in their facilities. BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — A Florida woman has been arrested after she allegedly beat and strangled her newborn twins to death, claiming she didn't know she was pregnant before she gave birth. Rachael Lynn Thomas, 30, told law enforcement that she gave birth to the boy and girl newborns on the toilet, according to WFTV. She said that the infants later died. An autopsy report released on Tuesday revealed that there was more to the babies' deaths than Thomas' story.According to police, Thomas called 911 from her home on Sunday "in reference to an unresponsive newborn." Thomas said she left work that morning after feeling sick. When she got home, she says she went to use the restroom and gave birth on the toilet, according to reports.Police said Thomas cut the baby boy's umbilical cord with a pair of scissors, placed him inside a blue shirt and began "cleaning up the mess," according to the arrest warrant."Baby John Doe" was pronounced dead at the hospital.When investigators went to Thomas' home, they say they found the body of a newborn girl in the trash can in a carport. Police say that it appeared as though she had tried to conceal the body with trash. Detectives say that the infant's umbilical cord was wrapped around her throat and that an object was lodged in the back of her throat. "Baby Jane Doe" was pronounced dead at the scene.According to reports, Thomas claims she didn't know she was pregnant and said that she continued to have her period until this month.Detectives said that the newborn twins suffered severe blunt force trauma to their heads.Investigators said Thomas told them “they were both dead and she got scared,” according to WFTV.Thomas was arrested on Monday afternoon and charged with child neglect and one count of tampering with evidence. On Tuesday, the charges were upgraded to one count of first-degree murder, two counts of felony murder and two counts of aggravated child abuse. Thomas has two other children. BUCKEYE, Arizona — The pundits, politicians and political analysts have made clear what they think of post-election transition the country is enduring, but what do typical Americans think?To find out, we traveled to Buckeye, Arizona to meet with up with a group of retirees who actively watch the political process, but are far from any polished pundit. They are diverse and consist of new voters who voted Donald Trump for the first time as well as former Republicans who switched to Joe Biden this election.“I think if we don’t discuss it, we can never heal,” Rosanna Gallagher, a Biden supporter, said as she hosted a socially distanced conversation on her back porch.Marty Paulson and Chris Halsey are two Trump supporters not afraid to share their thoughts.“I accept that Joe Biden will be president,” Paulson said disappointingly.Halsey is more reluctant.“Not until he concedes is the election over,” Halsey insisted to the group.“That doesn’t mean squat,” Richard Westermann, a Biden voter, said in response.Different SourcesOne thing you learn quickly when observing this group is their opinions are based on what they read.“I read everything I can,” Gallagher said.Gallagher, like the other Biden supporters here, trusts traditional news outlets like CNN, ABC, CBS or NBC.Paulson and Halsey feel differently.“You believe your source,” Paulson said.Paulson and Halsey tend to watch sources beyond the traditional channels on your cable provider.“I stopped watching Fox News 6-8 months ago,” Paulson said, commenting on the fact he doesn’t believe it's are conservative enough.Paulson and Halsey acknowledged they find themselves watching OANN, a far-right cable channel with the support of Trump, more often.COVID RESPONSEBecause the group has different sources, they obviously have different views of the world.“COVID is big on my mind,” Westermann said, commenting on what President-elect Biden needs to do first.Paulson and Halsey suggested how they differ.“If I get COVID, I would want to take hydroxychloroquine,” Halsey said about the treatment that the FDA stopped allowing doctors to prescribe outside of a clinical setting.“Do you believe in COVID?,” Gallagher asked Paulson sarcastically.“You going to shut down the entire economy for this,” Paulson said in response.“Nobody is saying that, this has never happened before,” Westermann said to Paulson, who he golfs with on a regular basis.TRANSITION AND ADVICE“I feel there is turmoil,” Gallagher said when asked about the current presidential transition.“We haven’t had peace all year,” Halsey said in response.“I don’t think there is turmoil going on,” Paulson said.But can Biden win over voters like Halsey and Paulson?“Is there anything he can do? Stop all this hatefulness,” Halsey said.The problem? The only area this group agrees is that the divisions are here to stay.“I don’t think the divisions are going to away one way or another,” Paulson said.“It’s never going to be solved, never,” Westermann said in agreement.One takeaway is this group never yelled or stormed out of the backyard upset.
