Get ready for sticker shock at the gas station if you're one of the estimated 36 million Americans hitting the roads this Memorial Day weekend.Gone are the days of -a-gallon gasoline. A spike in crude oil prices has lifted the national average price of gas by 31 percent over the past year to an average of .97 a gallon, according to AAA.Prices at the pump haven't been this high heading into the biggest driving holiday of the year since 2014, when crude was sitting in triple-digit territory."WIthout a doubt people are noticing and they're feeling the pinch," said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, a platform that helps drivers find real-time prices.AAA says that fifteen states, including New York, New Jersey and Illinois, are already facing average gas prices or higher. GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- A Grand Rapids teen is making sure your morning cup of coffee stays brewing for years to come with the launch of her new coffee line, Joven Coffee."Joven means 'young' in Spanish, so that is why we chose it because we're supporting young farmers," said Frankie Volekma, founder of Joven Coffee.At 14, Frankie is the youngest coffee Q grader in the world and is launching the coffee line to support the next generation of coffee farmers."We're just trying to make it a viable career option for a lot of these young farmers because a lot of times it's a low paying career to be in coffee farming," she said.In coffee producing countries like Columbia and regions of Africa, farmers are primarily 57 years old or older.Frankie's concern is those farmers will eventually retire, and there won't be enough young farmers to take their place."I think it's an important issue, and you're going to hear more about it over time," said Frankie's dad, Tim Volekma, owner of Sparrow Coffee and Schuil Coffee. Grocery chain Kroger announced Tuesday that is plans to hire 1,000 people to administer coronavirus vaccines at the chain’s 2,200 pharmacies and 220 clinics.Kroger’s vaccine program launches this week in the state of Alaska as health care workers in Anchorage and Juneau will be vaccinated by Kroger staff. Kroger says that it is working with state and federal officials to vaccinate others in prioritized populations, such as health care workers, and those living and working in assisted living facilities.Kroger is not the only major company to assist in administering vaccines. CVS and Walgreens began administering vaccines to those living and working in assisted living facilities this week.“Kroger Health is a COVID-19 response leader that has provided our patients, associates and other businesses with diagnostic testing tools and supporting resources since the onset of this public health crisis,” said Colleen Lindholz, Kroger Health’s president. “Kroger Health’s experienced health care providers remain committed to helping our patients and associates live healthier lives. The size and scale of our health care operation provides us with the unique ability to efficiently facilitate COVID-19 testing and immunize a large portion of the U.S. population, once the authorized vaccines become more widely available.”There have been two coronavirus vaccines authorized by the FDA.Moderna’s vaccine has been hailed as a medical breakthrough. The vaccine has been considered 94.1% effective against the virus. According to Moderna, none of the thousands who were given two shots of the vaccine had severe COVID-19 symptoms. That is compared to 30 patients who were given a placebo who had symptoms.Pfizer’s vaccine has an effectiveness of 95%.
