SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Police say they have made an arrest in connection with a deadly shooting in the Midway District during a meeting set up on social media.San Diego Police arrested 18-year-old Angel Garcia of San Diego on Wednesday and charged him in the murder of Eduardo Salguero, 18, of San Diego, on Nov. 25.Police say Salguero had arranged to purchase an item through Snapchat and met for the transaction behind several businesses in the 3600 block of Midway Dr. When he arrived, two Hispanic males entered his vehicle. During the meeting, one of the suspects pulled out a handgun and the transaction turned into an armed robbery.RELATED: Midway District shooting victim killed during Snapchat transaction, police sayMultiple gunshots were fired inside the vehicle before the two suspects fled. Salguero was taken to a nearby hospital but died of his injuries.Both suspects were described the suspects as Hispanic males, between 20-30 years old, who were wearing dark clothing at the time. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Monday afternoon, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department tweeted that convicted sex offender Cary Jay Smith has left San Diego County. The tweet added, “It is always our goal to keep our communities safe.”Smith had been staying at a motel around the 78 corridor which caused concern for North County community leaders. “I just don't feel good about this situation,” said Melanie Burkholder, candidate for CA State Assembly's 76th District. “This is a very sick individual. He does not need to be roaming the streets,” she said Monday morning.The Orange County District Attorney's Office says Smith claims to have killed three boys and molested 200 others.San Diego County Undersheriff Mike Barnett spoke to ABC10 News on Sunday night. “He liked to be referred to while he was in the state mental hospital as Mr. RTK, which is rape, torture, kill,” he said.It was last Tuesday when he said the CA Department of State Hospitals released Smith from Coalinga psychiatric facility without any restrictions under Megan's law, meaning he is not required to register as a sex offender.Deputies say he's served his time and is free to go where he wants.Before arriving in San Diego, the 59-year-old went to Orange, Corona and Lake Elsinore which sparked outrage in Los Angeles. In an effort to avoid any violence, San Diego deputies did not share his exact location but offered reassurance he was under 24-7 monitoring.The Orange County District Attorney's Office said Monday that its waiting for answers from the Governor’s Office as to why the state released him from the hospital and why the CA Attorney General's Office reportedly revoked his sex offender registration requirement in 2005.Monday, the Attorney General's Office referred ABC10 News to the Department of State Hospitals which said that it couldn't release information because of patient privacy laws. 1889

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Police arrested two people following a pursuit through San Carlos Friday night.Officers say they responded to reports of gunshots near the San Carlos Recreation Center around 9:53 p.m. They said they tried to pull over a suspicious vehicle, but it took off. A five-minute pursuit took place before the suspect’s car crashed near the Jackson and Golfcrest Drives.The suspects rushed out of the vehicle, but one was caught after surrendering at a nearby taco shop.  The other one ran into a nearby housing complex. That suspect surrendered after about a three-minute standoff.Police say they found guns in the car. The suspect's names have not yet been released.  713

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police have released pictures of a man accused of shooting and killing a 27-year-old man in the Midway District in late February.Police say Ernesto Castallenos Martinez, 41, shot and killed Alexander Mazin in a parking lot behind the 24 Hour Fitness on the 3600 block of Midway Drive.Following the shooting, police were led to the intersection of 30th Street and Upas Street where an hours-long standoff took place.RELATED: Police identify Midway District shooting victim, suspect of North Park standoff?After SWAT teams entered an apartment in the area, they didn’t find Martinez. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Nurses and healthcare workers gathered Friday morning demanding Palomar Health provide more nurses and PPE to support their staff as they see a surge in patients.Nurses said they are stretched thin and maxed out caring for our community during the pandemic."Palomar claims they took a hit due to the pandemic, but it's the nurses and caregivers who are taking the hit in the from of increased patient loads, unsafe staffing levels and inadequate PPE," ICU nurse Joanne Meza said.She and a group of healthcare workers held red signs reading "Save Lives, Safe Staffing Now."Palomar Health sent ABC 10News a statement stating they received a waiver from the California Department of Public Health Wednesday that would allow Palomar to "assign one ICU nurse to care for up to three patients, depending on patient acuity. The waiver, which only applies to one 12 bed unit which has both intensive and intermediate care patients located in the same area, has not been implemented and is only in preparation for a potential patient surge or reduction in workforce due to sickness."The law states safe ratios are one ICU nurse to two patients.Meza accused the hospital of furloughing employees while they knew the impact the pandemic would have.She also accused the hospital of commingling COVID and non-COVID patients. Palomar said that is "completely false. As a healthcare system, it is irresponsible to instill fear in our community. These false allegations by the union are frightening and endanger the health and safety of our community by discouraging people with serious conditions from seeking medical care."Palomar also said they always meet or exceed PPE requirements. 1698
