SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Political analysts said Congressman Duncan Hunter's guilty plea and expected resignation would likely keep California's 50th congressional district Republican. "Mathematically, this is clearly by registration should be a Republican seat and Ammar Campa-Najjar possibly could get in the runoff if he's the only Democrat, so I do predict it will stay in Republican hands," said political analyst John Dadian.Dadian calls it a horse race with three high profile Republicans vying for the seat.RELATED: Rep. Duncan Hunter pleads guilty to conspiracy to misuse campaign funds"Carl DeMaio former city council member, talk show host, Darrell Issa, a former member of congress, Brian Jones, State Senator whose district covers that quite a bit," said Dadian. Dadian said seniority could work to Issa's advantage. "For the past couple of years, since Duncan Hunter has been under indictment, he's been stripped of even being on committees, so Darrell Issa's argument is going to be "I get San Diego's power back the minute I get in, my other opponents are going to be freshmen," that's a very powerful argument," said Dadian.RELATED: Reaction to Rep. Duncan Hunter's plea changeWhen and if Hunter resigns, a spokesman with the San Diego Registrar of Voters office tells 10News the governor would have three options: leave the seat unfilled for the remaining term, call a special election, or consolidate the special election with a regularly scheduled election, such as the March 2020 Primary. Dadian points to the recent resignation of Democratic Congresswoman Katie Hill as one potential scenario. "Her special election and the regular primary is on March 3. There are different rules on a special than a regular, so there might be, for her, four races within six months, that might happen with Duncan Hunter depending on when he resigns," said Dadian.Duncan did not bring up resignation after his court appearance Tuesday morning. 1953
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- People living along the coast in north county say they can't remember the last time mosquitoes were so bad.Sharon Mauro lives near the San Elijo Lagoon in Solana Beach."Oh, we couldn't leave the house without them attacking us," said Mauro. She hired Tony Gallardo of Mosquito Joe to spray her property."The last few weeks have been very busy. Basically, from the coastline all the way to Poway, the mosquito problem is pretty significant right now," said Gallardo.Gallardo says he sprays roughly 15 homes a day."This is kind of a perfect storm in everybody is stuck at home now, they want to be outside. The kids are getting tired of being inside. You get outside the mosquitos are eating everybody up, they're breeding cause they have more food, strange way to put it," said Gallardo.San Diego County Vector Control crews sprayed the lagoon last week. They also discovered a new trouble spot."A new spot showed up, and we didn't find until it was a wee bit too late. We do have it treated now, so it's going to be a one-time event," said Chris Conlan, the county's supervising vector ecologist.Conlan said the recent high tides contributed to the increase in mosquitoes."Whenever we get a very high tide event, especially something like a King Tide, as the water recedes from those high tide events sometimes leaves standing pools, and this mosquito is very good at taking advantage of that," said Conlan.Conlan said the Black Salt Marsh Mosquito doesn't transmit disease, but it's an aggressive "day biter," and can travel up to five miles.Residents worried about mosquitos near their property should contact the county's vector control program. 1675

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On the edge of Balboa Park, parkgoers arrived Wednesday to a fresh layer of graffiti across a popular playground area.Joanne Schara leads a boot camp class at Bird Park at Upas three times a week. After a year of working out there, the things that drew her are now awash in graffiti. "It's just sad to see. You come here because you want a happy space. People bring their kids. People bring their pets. Its beautiful," said Schara. The tagging is everywhere, from the tables and benches and the wall wrapping around the playground area to utility boxes and graffiti on the ground."Doesn't give a good image at all," said Schara.Cathy Lea has lived in the neighborhood for 40 years and takes her dogs to the park twice a day."When I see the graffiti, it's disheartening," said Schara.Lea says every few days, there is more graffiti. On the concrete wall that surrounds the park, there are countless layers of tagging that have been painted over, only to be tagged again."That's not what this park is about," said Lea.On the Nextdoor app, some longtime neighbors posted the current graffiti is the "worst they've ever seen." Lately the graffiti has started to creep into areas previously untouched, including the playground set and the nearby rocks. As the tagging spreads, so does the frustration."It's not the kind of message we want to be sending in North Park," said Lea.Several neighbors have posted on the city's Get It Done app to get it cleaned up. Parkgoers worry it'll be tagged as soon as it's cleaned up. 1542
