Another 4,000 empty barrels also were floating in the river."The barrels are well-sealed," Wang Mingchen, deputy secretary-general of the Jilin city government, said at the press conference.There had been fears that if the chemicals leaked due to barrel damage or explosions, the water in the Songhua River, a major drinking water source of tens of millions of people in the two provinces, would be contaminated.However, Ministry of Environmental Protection spokesman Tao Detian said Thursday that a water test conducted early Thursday morning showed the river water was not contaminated.

PIRAEUS, Greece, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Two Chinese naval escort warships arrived in Greece's Piraeus Port on Monday, kicking off a five-day visit.The vessels, destroyer Guangzhou and frigate Chaohu, are part of the fifth Chinese naval escort flotilla, which just completed the escort mission in the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters to protect commercial ships from pirate attacks.Chinese Ambassador to Greece Luo Linquan and some 200 Chinese nationals came to the port to welcome the arrival of the two Chinese warships. Waving Chinese and Greek national flags, the enthusiastic Chinese living in Greece greeted the Chinese sailors with cheers.They were excited when allowed to tour one of the ships."We are so excited to have a chance to board a Chinese naval destroyer," Wu Hailong, a Chinese businessman in Athens, said, adding that he and his friends come to Piraeus early in the morning from central Athens to welcome the Chinese navy soldiers.Zhang Buren, a Chinese national from Taiwan who has lived in Athens for more than three decades, said he was very impressed by the elegant demeanor of Chinese navy soldiers. BEIJING, June 13 (Xinhua) -- Experts from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan Sunday started their third round of talks in Beijing to pave the way for a long-awaited pact to boost cross-Strait economic ties.During the talks, the two sides will discuss the main content of the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA), and goods and services trade in the "early harvest program."The ECFA is intended to normalize mainland-Taiwan economic ties and bring the two economies closer.The first round of talks took place in January in Beijing, and the second two months later in Taipei.Fan Liqing, spokeswoman of the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office, told a press conference Saturday that negotiations had made pronounced progress and were approaching completion.Yang Yi, another spokesman of the same organization, was reported as saying in March that the two sides should work together to complete the pact in June.Chiang Pin-kung, chairman of Taiwan's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF), said on April 2 the SEF also hoped to see the signing of the ECFA by the end of June.

BEIJING, June 29 (Xinhua) -- The number of criminal explosion cases as well as gun crimes in China dropped by 13.4 and 33.1 percent year on year, respectively, in the first five months of 2010, Ministry of Public Security said in a statement Monday.The statement, however, did not provide exact numbers.Police nationwide seized over 351 tonnes of explosives, 1.7 million detonators, 15,000 guns, 1.84 million bullets, 300,000 imitation guns and 170,000 illegal knives since the launching of a national crackdown on illegal explosive and guns, the statement said.The widespread publicity about the police crackdown apparently paid off with 3,099 tips received from the public which led to the solving of 1,538 cases and the arrest of 2,065 suspects, said the statement.Those who provided information to police were rewarded with 960,000 yuan (about 141,000 U.S. dollars) in total, it said.

CHANGCHUN, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Civilians were mobilized Friday to join exhausted soldiers and emergency workers struggling against mounting difficulties to retrieve thousands of chemical-filled barrels that were swept into a major northeast China river by flood waters two days ago.Some 3,000 full barrels and 4,000 empty ones were swept into the Wende River and on to the Songhua River after floods hit warehouses of two chemical factories in Jilin City, Jilin Province, early Wednesday.As of 6 p.m. Friday, 3,700 of the about 7,000 containers have been retrieved, according to a statement from the provincial government.Provincial authorities vowed to retrieve all the containers before they flow out of Hadashan Reservoir on the lower reaches of Songhua River in Jilin's Songyuan City.However, salvage workers fear some of the barrels, many filled with 170 kilograms of flammable liquid, may have sunk to the bottom of the Songhua River, raising serious risks of lingering water contamination.Chemical barrels were also spotted lying unattended in the debris of flood-devastated villages.At 2 p.m. Friday, the Fengman Reservoir, on a tributary of the Songhua River and 24 km southeast of Jilin City, opened floodgates to discharge flood waters.The water flow at each gate peaked at 800 cubic meters per second around 4 p.m., and at least thousands of residents had been evacuated over Thursday night and Friday morning.Workers said the move might help speed up salvage efforts by washing away floating debris, such as trash, weeds and tree branches, which had hampered the work.
