CHENGDU, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- The massive mudslide that hit Wenchuan County, southwest China's Sichuan Province, Saturday had killed 15 people and injured nine others by Monday, local authorities said Tuesday.Wenchuan County was the epicenter of the 8.0-magnitude earthquake that jolted Sichuan and other neighboring provinces in west China in May 2008. The quake left some 87,000 people dead or missing.The county, which falls under the jurisdiction of Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture of Aba, was ravaged by rain-triggered floods and mudslides Saturday.At least 31 people were reported missing following the mudslide, but whether the 15 deaths were included was not known, according to a statement issued by the county government of Wenchuan.More than 50,000 residents and tourists were forced to evacuate in Aba as the local meteorological station issued warnings beginning Friday about expected heavy rains and possible geological disasters.Also, the county government of Wenchuan has arranged temporary shelters for residents left homeless by the floods.In Yingxiu Township of Wenchuan, rows of newly completed homes were submerged by the overflowed Minjiang River which runs through the town. The new homes had been built to accommodate those residents relocated outside Yingxiu after the deadly earthquake.If the flooding had not occurred, Lian Qunhua, who opened a grocery in the town, would have received the key for her new home in two weeks."This used to be my home," Lian told a Xinhua reporter, pointing to some debris in front of her. "That is my new home," she said, indicating a row of fresh new buildings soaked in the flood waters on the opposite bank of the Minjiang River."I feel hurt, indeed," she lamented.

ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from the massive mudslide in northwest China's Gansu Province has risen to 1,156 as of 4 p.m. Friday, with 588 still missing, local authorities said.The toll stood at 1,144 by Thursday afternoon.More than 1,500 survivors are living in tents or school classrooms while 8,300 have sought shelter with relatives and friends, said Zhao Minxue, head of the publicity department in Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture which administers Zhouqu.Water and power supplies, and telecommunication services in Zhouqu are gradually back to normal thanks to swift repair efforts.Power has been resumed in the key regions of the county seat and at 60 percent of households, the provincial information office said in a statement Friday.Relief teams are digging new wells after finding two new drinking water sources and 21 unpolluted wells, it said.Gansu had received 120.4 million yuan (17.7 million U.S. dollars) in cash donations and relief materials by Friday afternoon, the provincial department of civil affairs said.Meanwhile, relief workers continued to clear the water course of the Bailong River, which overflowed after being blocked by debris, amid fears that more downpours could trigger new floods and mudslides.Rescuers tried to give dignity to the deceased as they were striving to search bodies in the debris. But this was no easy work sometimes as many bodies were buried meters deep in sludge."All the soldiers have done their best," said survivor Bai Chengxiang, 24. "If they could not find the remains of my aunt's family, I will have to accept the reality."

HARARE, June 15 (Xinhua) -- Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Secretary-General Sindiso Ngwenya on Tuesday urged China to enter into joint ventures with Africa's largest regional trading and economic grouping to capitalize on the customs union that was launched last year.The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa, boasting 19 member states and a population of more than 450 million, is endowed with vast natural and human resources that make it a fertile investment destination, Ngwenya said."With a combined population of 456 million and a combined Gross Domestic Product of 450 billion U.S. dollars, this region is very rich in natural resources, rich in human resources and land for agriculture."This region will therefore become the region of first choice for investment and has the potential to feed the whole world," Ngwenya told Xinhua in an interview.He said China should take COMESA as its preferred investment destination and increase trade with Africa's largest trading and economic grouping.Ngwenya has previously urged more Chinese investment in the manufacturing sector so that Africa can move up the value chain and increase the incomes of its people while ensuring that less wealth is exported abroad.Trade between COMESA countries and China has also been growing by between 50 percent and 100 percent depending on the country, but on average by more than 50 percent annually and by the end of 2008 China-Africa trade was approaching the 100 billion U.S. dollars, according to Ngwenya.Ngwenya said the COMESA Customs Union presented immense opportunities for the Asian giant to deepen and consolidate economic cooperation with member states, most of whom it had strong bilateral, economic and political ties with. ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from the massive mudslide in Zhouqu County, northwest China's Gansu Province, has risen to 1,239 as of 4 p.m. Saturday, with 505 still missing, local disaster relief headquarters said.The county education department said Saturday that primary and middle schools in Zhouqu will start the autumn semester on Aug. 25, ten days later than scheduled.This was because hundreds of homes and one primary school were buried and more schools were damaged or inundated in water. Many school classrooms are also being used as temporary shelters.By Saturday noon, power supply was resumed in 8,375 homes, or 76 percent of all affected in the blackout.Vegetables were on sale for the first time on Saturday, nearly a week after the mudslide buried the only vegetable market in Zhouqu.Local authorities ordered 8,400 kg vegetables from neighboring Longnan City and they were sold Saturday afternoon at the same or even lower prices prior to the disaster.Downpours from Wednesday night to Thursday morning have triggered severe floods and mudslides in Longnan, leaving 33 dead and 63 missing, local government said.A major road into the counties of Chengxian and Huixian in Longnan was reopened Saturday night after being damaged in the floods.More than 500 troops and 26 doctors have arrived in the hardest-hit Chengxian, where at least 20 people were killed and more than 10,000 residents had been relocated, to join in the rescue operations.In Gansu's neighboring province of Sichuan, floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains this week have killed at least 10 people and left another 57 missing.In Wenchuan of Sichuan alone, the epicenter of an 8-magnitude quake in May 2008 that left 87,000 people dead or missing, the floods had left 38 people missing by 3 p.m. Saturday.Some regions in Sichuan received a rainfall of more than 200 millimeters between Thursday and Saturday, prompting water levels in many major local rivers to rise above warning levels.Heavy rains also wrecked the eastern province of Shandong this week, forcing the evacuation of 204,500 people, damaging 547,100 hectares of crops, toppling 15,873 houses and causing a direct economic loss of 2.38 billion yuan (350 million U.S. dollars).China suffers the worst flood in at least a decade this summer. BEIJING, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's central government has urged more efforts to be made to ensure this year's grain output, a government statement said Wednesday.A string of policies have been rolled out to support autumn grain production, said the State Council, China's cabinet, in the statement released after an executive meeting chaired by Premier Wen Jiabao Wednesday.Autumn grain production is key for China to meet its annual output target as it accounts for 70 percent of the total production.The Ministry of Finance will allocate 1.1 billion yuan (162.4 million U.S. Dollars) to subsidize purchases of fertilizer and pest control, the statement said.Wen urged efforts to restore production in disaster-hit regions at the meeting, after large swathes of farmland have been affected by floods in recent months.Wen also stressed the application of technology and weather forecasting at the meeting.China's summer grain output declined 0.3 percent year on year to 123.1 million tonnes this year, the first fall in seven years, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.
