WASHINGTON (AP) — A statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee that represented Virginia in the U.S. Capitol has been removed.Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam said in a statement that workers removed the statue from the National Statuary Hall Collection early Monday.“The Confederacy is a symbol of Virginia’s racist and divisive history, and it is past time we tell our story with images of perseverance, diversity, and inclusion,” said Northam.Each state is entitled to display two statues in the collection. Lee’s statue had stood with George Washington’s statue since 1909 as Virginia’s representatives in the Capitol.The Lee statue had been one among 13 located in the Crypt of the Capitol, representing the 13 original colonies.Northam had requested its removal and a state commission has recommended replacing Lee’s statue with a likeness of Barbara Johns.Johns was an American civil rights leader who protested poor conditions at her all-Black high school in the town of Farmville in 1951. Her court case became part of a landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision that struck down racial segregation in public schools.Virginia’s General Assembly must approve the replacement before a sculptor can be commissioned for the new statue. WASHINGTON — Congress is defying President Donald Trump on removing Confederate symbolism from the military.The Senate on Thursday joined the House in approving legislation that would rename bases like Fort Bragg and Fort Benning that are named for Confederate officers.The Senate vote was an overwhelming 86-14 vote. Earlier this week, the House passed the measure with a 295-125 vote.The Senate passage opens the door for the Senate and House Armed Services Committees to open negotiations for a final version of the bill. Once that bill is passed, it would head to Trump's desk.Even if Trump were to veto the bill, Thursday's vote indicates that Congress could override it and make the bill a law.Trump has said he favors that military bases keep the names of Confederate military leaders, despite efforts from Pentagon officials to change the name. Trump says renaming the bases would be re-writing history; critics say it's inappropriate for U.S. military bases to bear the names of those who fought on the side of slavery and against the Union.There are currently 10 Army bases throughout the U.S. named after Confederate generals, as well as a number of smaller military institutions with such names.The legislation would approve 1 billion in spending for the military and also includes a 3% pay raise for the troops. 1335

Walmart employees could soon be getting a little more wiggle room in their work attire.The discount giant is testing a new dress code that would allow workers to wear any solid colored shirt and adds blue to the mix of approved pants colors, making blue jeans work-appropriate attire, a spokesperson said."We are always testing new ideas and concepts in a small number of our stores," spokesperson Justin Rushing said in an emailed statement "Some of these tests are expanded while others are retired. We won't know next steps on this test until we've had a chance to learn what works and what could work better."The news was reported earlier by Bloomberg. The site reported about two dozen Walmart locations will test the new clothing policy.Walmart employees at stores not included in the pilot will have to continue to abide by the old dress code, which bans blue jeans and stipulates khaki or black pants with a solid white or blue top.One new dress rule, however, will be nationwide: Beginning April 14, new hires cannot have visible face tattoos, according to CBS News.With 4,900 US stores, Walmart is the country's largest employer. (CNS) - A verdict has been reached in the trial of a woman and her gun instructor who are accused of carrying out a plan to kill the woman's estranged husband.A jury has found Diana Lovejoy, 44, guilty of conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder. Welcon McDavid Jr. was also found guilty of conspiracy to commit murder, but the reading of the verdict had to be postponed because Lovejoy passed out. Lovejoy and McDavid Jr. were charged with conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder in the Sept. 1, 2016, attack on 45-year-old Greg Mulvihill, who was wounded in the 11 p.m. shooting in Carlsbad.Police allege Lovejoy and McDavid planned the crime and that the latter - - who worked at a gun range where Lovejoy was taking marksmanship lessons -- called the victim, arranged to meet him in the alley and opened fire on him with a rifle while hiding in a patch of bushes.Court records indicated Lovejoy and Mulvihill were in the midst of a contentious divorce, and that she had obtained a restraining order against him on accusations of emotional and sexual abuse.Mulvihill took the stand during the trial and described the moments leading up to him being shot, saying he didn't realize he'd been shot right away and, at first, he thought he felt something in his back even though he could see the shooter in front of him.Mulvihill testified about a bitter custody battle with his estranged wife.Mulvihill said he went up a remote trail in Carlsbad out of desperation, fearing Lovejoy would reopen their custody battle. He took a friend, a flashlight and a small aluminum baseball bat, but he thought he was picking up documents from a private investigator.Instead, as he approached the spot off Rancho Santa Fe Road and Avenida Soledad, he shined his flashlight around and spotted someone dressed in camouflage pointing a long gun right at him.Before he knew what was happening, Mulvihill said he was hit once in the side, the bullet exiting out his back. McDavid faces 50 years to life behind bars, and Lovejoy could be sentenced to 25 years to life.After court, the jury foreperson, Erin Reed,  told reporters the defense version of the shooting "seemed too far-fetched." 2224
