BEIJING, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor said Friday the national advisory body would have to contribute to decisions on major national and global challenges at its annual session next month.     This year would be crucial for the country's development, said Jia Qinglin, chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee.     CPPCC members would "conduct research and give targeted and effective opinions and proposals, to provide the (ruling Communist) Party and the government with reference and data for their decision-making", he told a meeting of the Standing Committee of the CPPCC National Committee. SHIJIAZHUANG, April 9 (Xinhua) -- Beijing-based Sanyuan Group successfully bid 49 million yuan (7.2 million U.S. dollars) on Thursday to buy a 95-percent stake in the Sanlu (Shandong) dairy company, previously owned by the Sanlu Group, the bankrupt dairy firm at the center of the melamine contamination scandal.     The shares were put up for sale at an auction in the northern city of Shijiazhuang, capital of Hebei Province, according to sources with the Hebei Jiahai Auction Co. Ltd.     Four companies participated in the auction, which started at 10a.m., with the opening bid of 33 million yuan.     "The company is happy with the result," said a representative of Sanyuan after the auction, but he refused to comment further.     Sanlu (Shandong), which was set up in 2006, specializes in making and selling liquid milk products. The company changed its name to Shandong Ecological Pasture Co. Ltd. in October last year.     The other three bidders were Beijing investment consultancy Tongde Tongyi, a Hebei food company Xiangyao, and Wandashan dairy company in northeast Heilongjiang Province.     Auctioneer Yuan Guoliang told Xinhua that "the four bidders had clear idea about the value of the shares, and the atmosphere was tense."     However, the sale of a Sanlu's 70-percent stake in the Tangshan Sanlu company had been revoked just before the auction.     Sanyuan Group successfully bid 616.5 million yuan to buy Sanlu's core assets on March 4.     Sanlu Group, which was based in Shijiazhuang, had been China's leading seller of milk powder for 15 years until the melamine scandal broke in September last year. The group's revenue hit 10 billion yuan in 2007, when Sanyuan's revenue was only 1 billion yuan.

BEIJING, April 9 (Xinhua) -- Venezuela President Hugo Chavez concluded his working visit to China and left Beijing on Thursday night.     During his two-day stay, Chavez met with Chinese President Hu Jintao and Vice President Xi Jinping respectively, exchanging views on enhancing the bilateral strategic partnership.     Chavez also visited the Party School of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) earlier on Thursday, the highest training institution for CPC officials. Addressing about 100 Chinese officials, he said the two countries witnessed great progress in their cooperation in economy, science and technology areas. BEIJING, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- A section of the local prosecutor's office that deals with dereliction of duty is involved in the investigation into Monday night's massive fire in downtown Beijing, the Supreme People's Procuratorate said here Thursday.     The fire led to one death and seven injuries.     The investigation involves two offices, the Supreme Procuratorate said: the Beijing People's Procuratorate and the district procuratorate of Chaoyang, the section of Beijing where the blaze at the China Central Television (CCTV) complex occurred.     The Supreme People's Procuratorate declined to elaborate on what the investigations covered.     China's procuratorate is the equivalent of a prosecutor's or attorney general's office, handling a range of civilian crimes, but it also has a special division responsible for crimes involving dereliction of official duty, such as bribery and corruption, that the police don't handle.     The fire, which engulfed the building that houses some CCTV facilities as well as the unopened Mandarin Oriental Hotel near the futuristic tower that will house the state broadcaster, was caused by a powerful fireworks show put on by CCTV.     One firefighter died from breathing toxic fumes and seven people were hospitalized. The huge blaze also caused widespread traffic congestion in eastern Beijing and led to the evacuation of hundreds of residents.     The police have detained 12 people so far, including a man in charge of the new site's construction, three CCTV workers and eight people CCTV hired from a fireworks company in central Hunan Province to stage the show.     The fireworks they used were dangerous and needed approval before being allowed in downtown Beijing, a Beijing government spokesman has said. He said that CCTV did not get approval and further alleged that its workers ignored police warnings that night.     Monday was the Lantern Festival, which officially ends the Lunar New Year, and it's traditional to light fireworks on that night.

BEIJING, March 20 (Xinhua) -- China and Japan should strengthen cooperation to deal with the financial crisis, said Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo on Friday.     "China is willing to work with Japan to properly handle sensitive issues in bilateral relations and consolidate our political foundations," said Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress.     In a meeting with Japanese Defense Minister Hamada Yasukazu, Wu said China-Japan relations were improving and cooperation in various fields have expanded.
