SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The celebration of something near and dear to many San Diegans' hearts kicks off this week.American Craft Beer Week runs from May 13 - 19, inviting communities of craft brewers across the U.S. to celebrate the craft culture. The week began in 2006, when the Brewers Association wanted to make American Beer Month (traditionally in July) a week-long effort before summer beer season.In San Diego, there's no shortage of enthusiasm for the craft beer industry. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The city updated the Sherman Heights community and surrounding neighborhoods Wednesday evening, about the transitional homeless storage facility that's set to open.  The facility is scheduled to open at the corner of the Commerical and 20th Streets on June 13.  It's been a controversial project from the beginning. The storage facility will hold 500 units for homeless people to store their things while they look for work and get back on their feet.  RELATED:  514

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The mother of a Southern California girl diagnosed with rat-bite fever is sharing her story at a San Diego hospital Friday to educate other parents about the danger. Rat-bite fever is a potentially deadly infection spread through contact with domestic rats. 8-year-old Cali from Menifee contracted the disease when the rat’s saliva came into contact with an open wound, according to Rady Children’s Hospital officials. Cali has eczema on her fingers which may have contributed to the situation, a doctor said.Rat-bite fever is a bacterial disease which can cause a rash, fever, and body aches.The illness started Friday night, said Cali's mother Sabrina. By Sunday, Cali had a fever of 104.6 degrees. She lost the ability to use her hands and arms and had a whole-body rash."Really, really scary. Really hard to watch," said Sabrina.Cali's family bought two rats, Shell and Onyx, from a feed store about two years ago with no warning about the potential of rat-bite fever.Doctors recommended the family get rid of their rats."We didn't want to do it," said Sabrina. “It’s not a fun thing to tell your kid you’ve got to get rid of your best friend."Cali's mother had a recommendation for other parents."Just know that this can happen," she said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The brother of the man accused of fatally shooting a Good Samaritan on Interstate 15 in October has been arrested and will also be charged in connection with the murder.Edson Acuna, 24, was taken into custody in Mexico and turned over to U.S. authorities Tuesday, according to San Diego Police. Acuna's brother, Brandon, was arrested shortly after 21-year-old Curtis Adams was shot and killed on I-15 during the early hours of Oct. 27.Adams, a San Diego Navy sailor, and his girlfriend had stopped their vehicle on southbound I-15 just before 2:30 a.m. to check on an apparent stranded vehicle near the Mountain View area, said San Diego police homicide Lt. Anthony Dupree. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said up to 8,000 inmates statewide could be released early in order to stop the spread of coronavirus within prisons, and the San Diego District Attorney Summer Stephan is now working to alert victims and families as people are released.“Those are people that cause a public safety risk and a real concern for us,” said Stephan.One known inmate being released in the next week is David Herbert, an Oceanside man who was convicted of torturing and killing dogs. He was sentenced to nine years in 2019 but has served a fraction of that. Now, Michelle Plaketta, whose dog was killed by Herbert, is worried about the safety of her family.RELATED: Oceanside man who tortured neighbors' dogs may be released early due to COVID-19“The system is basically failing us as victims to allow him to be released on such a short time,” Plaketta said.Stephan said at the end of July, about 300 inmates from San Diego County who had committed lower-level crimes were released early and returned back to society. In that group was Martin Alvarez, the man suspected of stabbing another man to death in a Pacific Beach bathroom in August. Now, the DA’s office will get five days notice before inmates are released, giving them time to reach out to victims and survivors with an emergency team that was created for this purpose.“What do you need from us? Do you need us to help you with a restraining order?
