SAN DIEGO (AP and CNS) — A white Christmas was in store for parts of California with wet weather elsewhere in the state that could mean dangerous driving conditions and possible power outages."A storm system is coming and after about 10 p.m. tonight, we'll begin having scattered showers that will continue through the day on Christmas," NWS forecaster Samantha Connolly said of the San Diego impact. "The storm system will bring cooler temperatures through tomorrow, and snow above 5,000 feet."Connolly said temperatures will drop into the high 50s to 60s in most of San Diego on Christmas day. Half an inch to an inch of rain is expected in the mountains.The NWS forecaster said the storm will leave San Diego later in the day on Christmas. Wednesday, the day after the storm, is expected to be dry. But more light rain could be on the way."We have another potential storm system that could come in on Thursday and Friday," Connolly said. "We're expecting a little rain from that, but not much."The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory Monday for higher elevations in San Bernardino, Riverside, Los Angeles, Ventura and Kern counties.The weather service said the fast-moving storm system was expected to move into Southern California late Monday, bringing up to 4 inches of snow to elevations above 4,000 feet (1,200 meters) including Big Bear, Wrightwood and the Grapevine area of Interstate 5.The system also was expected to bring gusty winds between 40 and 60 mph (64 to 97 kph) and a chance of rain at lower elevations.The conditions could create snowy and ice-covered roads with low visibility and strong cross winds. The California Department of Transportation said chains will be required in mountain areas.In Northern California, the weather service issued a flash flood watch for an area of Mendocino County that was charred by wildfires earlier this year.The warning was in effect from noon until 6 p.m. Monday. SAN DIEGO — (KGTV) -- The Del Mar Fairgrounds is weighing its legal options after the KAABOO Music announced that it would move to Petco Park in 2020, the venue's CEO told 10News.Fairgrounds chief executive Tim Fennell declined a formal interview, but pointed to language in the Fairgrounds' contract with KAABOO that blocks the festival from holding a similar event within a 75-mile radius the year it cancels the contract. SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Smoke from the fire that ravaged a Navy warship in San Diego Bay contained elevated levels of toxins, but air-quality authorities say area residents have little to fear.The San Diego Union-Tribune says the local Air Pollution Control District found smoke from the USS Bonhomme Richard contained a dozen potentially harmful substances but they were at levels for which there are no known great health risks.The district issued the Navy a notice of violation for creating a public nuisance and contaminating the air.The Navy has yet to say whether the vessel will be repaired. 600

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A hit-and-run driver struck a motorcyclist early Wednesday morning in the Fairmont Village neighborhood, leaving the rider with a broken leg, police said.The crash was reported around 12:10 a.m. at the intersection of Lantana Drive and Euclid Avenue, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.A 33-year-old man was riding a Yamaha motorcycle northbound on Euclid Avenue when a vehicle pulled out from Lantana Drive and struck the right side of the motorcycle, Buttle said.The rider was taken to a hospital for treatment of a fractured tibia and fibula, the officer said.The suspect vehicle, described as a white Honda sedan, was last seen heading southbound on Euclid Avenue, Buttle said.A description of the hit-and-run driver was not immediately available. 784

SAN DIEGO — A College Area nonprofit that is seeing record requests for its services may not survive the pandemic itself.Sharia's Closet provides free clothes to people who have an emergency need. Founder Shamine Linton said with the Coronavirus pandemic, the organization has already served more than 2,500 families in 2020, a record pace. "Due to unemployment, homelessness and domestic violence, our needs have grown," Linton said. Sharia's Closet, named for Linton's daughter, operates out of a former dental office near San Diego State University. It's divided into five rooms that are filled with clothes for children, teens, men and women - casual to professional. Linton said the organization gets connected to families through 54 social service organizations. While the demand is at an all-time high, the prospects of surviving past 2020 are not. "I don't think I'll have the money to continue for the next year," Linton said. Linton said the organization survives off community donations, but those have lagged in this economy. She has reduced hours for her staff of two, and the closet is now only open three days a week. The formerly manageable ,500 in monthly operating costs is now becoming daunting. "I'm hoping for financial donations to help keep our doors open, to help keep the service for the community that needs it the most," Linton said.Linton said Sharia's Closet has been able to receive public assistance for personal protective equipment, but not operations.
