COVID-19 has killed more than 50,000 people in nursing homes and long-term care facilities. That is at least 40% of all U.S. coronavirus deaths.The White House put in new measures recently to better protect residents.“The numbers are continuing to rise. We're just beginning to get some of the numbers out of some of the states and so this is a real outrage,” said Bill Sweeney, Senior Vice President of Government Affairs at AARP. “It didn't have to be this way, and this is a national disgrace.”AARP says required virus case data from facilities is happening too late. They're about a week behind and testing isn't consistent.Some facilities are still having issues with PPE, including training staff to wear it properly.Both Republicans and Democrats want to give more help to nursing homes in the next relief bill.AARP is concerned about the lack of inspections and oversight. It worries some facilities will get immunity from lawsuits.“Without inspections, without the ombudsman being able to go in and find out what’s going on in the facilities, without family visits being allowed, there's been no accountability at all and if they give immunity to these nursing homes, there won’t ever be accountability,” said Sweeney. “There will never be justice for families whose loved ones were treated poorly.”Before the pandemic, AARP says eight out of ten nursing homes were cited for infection control problems.Meanwhile, AARP encourages family members to call their representative in Congress if they are worried about their loved one and are not getting answers. 1573

Congress has passed the biggest investment in national parks in decades.The House voted Wednesday to approve the Great American Outdoors Act, a sweeping conservation and public lands bill, which President Donald Trump has pledged to sign into law. Over the next five years, it will put up to .5 billion towards a backlog in needed maintenance for roads, facilities and more.“So, the park service, instead of doing band-aid fixes, they will have reliable, consistent funding to start doing some of these priority repairs, to ensure that our park service sites are safe, accessible, and they'll be around for generations to come,” said Marcia Argust, Director of the Restore America’s Parks Project.Argust advocated for the Great American Outdoors Act. She says this is the perfect time to make the investment, because Americans are looking to get outdoors more during the COVID-19 pandemic.The parks service has found the legislation will create 100,000 additional jobs. That's on top of the boost to businesses in surrounding communities that rely on visitors.Plus, the recreation industry as a whole supports 5.2 million jobs.“So, those are really important to sustain now more than ever, so this legislation during these times makes a lot of sense,” said Argust.The bill does not call for using taxpayer dollars. Congressman Duncan Hunter is continuing to stand up for his political livelihood, one year after a federal campaign fraud indictment.Voters in the 50th District re-elected Hunter in November, despite 60 federal charges of campaign fraud against him and his wife Margaret. The Hunters were accused of misusing 0,000 in campaign contributions - funding things like lavish vacations and living expenses. Now, the congressman is facing attacks and challenges from members of his own party as he pushes to renew his term in 2020. "When he was first indicted, everybody wrote his political obituary," said Political Analyst John Dadian. But Hunter, a Republican, is very much alive. He beat Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar in 2018, and is continuing to fight the charges in Federal Court.The challenges, however, are mounting. In June, Margaret Hunter reached a plea deal with prosecutors, agreeing to testify against her husband. Plus, Judge Thomas Whelan ruled federal prosecutors can use details of Congressman Hunter's alleged affairs with five Washington D.C. area women, allegedly funded with campaign contributions, as part of their case. "I think voters in the 50th District have said, and they clearly spoke in November of 2018, that they want to wait for the courts to decide and give them a clear judgment before they decide on the political fate of Congressman Hunter," said Thad Kousser, who chairs the political science department at UC San Diego. Hunter's trial has now been pushed back to mid-January to wait for a decision on his appeal to have the case thrown out. That means voters will be getting their absentee ballots while the trial is ongoing. "They're going to have very litlte time to make up their minds after this trial," Kousser said.
