AURORA, Colo. – Hundreds of people are expected to gather Friday evening to demand that the officers involved in the in-custody death of Elijah McClain be fired by the Aurora Police Department.On Friday, they got part of their wish granted as Officer Jason Rosenblatt was among three Aurora Police officers fired. Rosenblatt recieved a text message from three other officers who imitated a choke hold that was performed on McClain. Rosenblatt responded with "Ha-Ha" to the text messages, Aurora Interim Police Chief Vanessa Wilson said. Two of the officers in the photo were fired, while a third resigned earlier this week. But the protesters are calling for the firing of two additional officers who were involved in last August's incident that resulted in McClain's death.“For 10 months Aurora Police Department has shielded Elijah McClain's murderers on their force from facing any form of justice. It was only last Friday, just ahead of a mass march for Elijah, that they pulled the three killers off the streets and put them on paid desk duty,” reads the announcement of the protest organized by the Party for Socialism and Liberation – Denver (PSL). “We need to make it clear that this is absolutely NOT enough.”Last Friday, APD announced officers Nathan Woodyard, Rosenblatt and Randy Roedema had been taken off street duty "because of threats and harassment," according to a police spokesperson. Police said those threats involved phone calls as well as email messages.Officials did not disclose which department the officers were reassigned to, but said they were working in a "non-enforcement capacity."The PSL says they expect murder charges “for the three killers” and demand that APD fire all three “IMMEDIATELY.”The rally will start at 3 p.m. MT at the site where organizers say, “Elijah was brutalized and killed and where APD danced on his grave.” From there, protesters will march to the APD headquarters at the Aurora Municipal Center.The rally will start three hours earlier than originally planned as McClain's family plans to hold a "community response" following a 2 p.m. news conference by the Aurora Police Department. The march is still scheduled for 6 p.m. The march and protest will put APD’s response to test once again, following a violent night of confrontation between officers and protesters last Saturday.Organizers say there will be people of all ages at Friday’s protest, “who do not want a repeat of last Saturday’s violence from APD, but (who) will not be intimidated out of exercising their First Amendment right to assemble and voice their concerns.”McClain’s death, largely unnoticed for the past 10 months, recently garnered national media attention following nationwide calls to reform interactions between police and Black Americans in the wake of George Floyd’s death.On Tuesday, the Colorado U.S. Attorney's Office, along with several other law enforcement agencies, announced they've been reviewing facts in the death of the 23-year-old Black man since last year for a potential federal civil rights investigation, saying they were aware of the photo allegations which surfaced Monday evening, and were gathering further information about the incident. Pedro Rios says the idea that immigrants are coming to this country solely to be a burden to the United States is absolutely false. Rios is the Executive Director of American Friends Service Committee – a national organization that has worked on immigration and border issues for 42 years. He says he is against a new rule that disqualifies immigrants from a green card if they use certain government benefits, because he says it's causing people to drop out of benefit services they do qualify for. “In this case, prenatal care is not a targeted benefit. However, someone might decide to stop receiving that care simply because they fear that it would place them at the crosshairs of some sort of immigration enforcement operation,” Rios said. Dulce Garcia, an immigration attorney and DACA recipient, agrees with Rios. She says the rule has a two-fold impact: it denies more people the ability to qualify as a legal permanent resident, and now people are afraid of accessing other public benefits. She knows from personal experience when her family had to live inside a car and with very little food. “We’re going to see more people like my parents who were afraid of accessing public benefits and decided to risk our health essentially by remaining unsheltered and by struggling with food,” Garcia said. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a food program that's among those included in the rule. If immigrants collect those benefits more than 12 months in three years, they can't get a green card - and become a permanent resident. “We all fall on hard times. My family fell on hard times, and I wish that we would have had people telling us ‘it’s OK, it’s OK to receive help’ so that we would be safe.” As the executive director of Border Angels, a nonprofit that advocates for the immigrant community, Garcia says she tries to empower immigrants with accurate information so they know what benefits they’re still eligible for. However, there are people in favor of the rule, like Agnes Gibboney, who was born in Hungary. Her family entered the U.S. in 1970. “When we immigrated to the U.S., my parents had to sign a document stating they would not apply for any public assistance. That my father could support my mother, my brother and myself,” Gibboney said. Gibboney says she doesn't like the idea of immigrants using taxpayer dollars for services. “The importance of being fully vetted is for the government to know who is coming into this country. To make sure you are of good moral standing, to make sure you’re going to be a good citizen, and make sure that you’re gonna be a plus to this country,” Gibboney said. When it announced the new rule, the Department of Homeland Security called self-sufficiency a core American value. On the other hand, Rios says public benefits might be necessary in order for some immigrants to eventually become self-sufficient.“What we’ve seen in the past is when their needs aren’t being met, then it’s harder for them to support themselves in other ways,” Rios said.  3052

As of Thursday night, 456 restaurant owners have joined a class-action suit against New York City and state over indoor dining, according to the attorney representing the restaurant owners.They're hoping a court order will get indoor dining back into New York City. That list now includes the father of superstar musician and actress Lady Gaga, who owns Joanne Trattoria on the Upper West Side."When it rains we gotta close," said Joe Germanotta. "Once it starts getting cold. A Tulsa police officer has died Tuesday morning after being shot in the line of duty on Monday. Chief Wendell Franklin made the announcement on Tuesday afternoon. Sgt. Craig Johnson died after being shot during a traffic stop around 3:30 a.m. on Monday.Police say the second officer involved in the shooting, Officer Aurash Zarkeshan, is improving and has been responsive to medical staff. Two people are in custody including the alleged gunman, David Ware. Ware is now charged with one count of homicide. He’s due in court this Thursday.Johnson joined TPD in 2005 and became sergeant in 2015. He worked at the Mingo Valley Division.Franklin said around 3:25 a.m. Monday, Officer Zarkeshan stopped a vehicle on a regular traffic stop near 21st and Mingo. The officer approached the vehicle, got the driver's information and went back to his vehicle. Another officer was assigned to the stop with him. Johnson responded and they both went back to the car.They talked to the only person in the car, Ware. Ware refused to get out of the vehicle and went back and forth with them. Franklin said this went on for several minutes.Franklin said Johnson asked Ware 12 times to get out of the vehicle and threatened to use his Taser. Johnson did end up using the Taser on Ware but it did not incapacitate him. Johnson also used pepper spray twice but it did not stop Ware.The two physically removed Ware from the car, that's when he got a handgun from inside the car and fired multiple shots at them. Police said Ware then slowly walked to a waiting vehicle nearby.A manhunt ensued in east Tulsa. Police located Ware near 31st and Mingo and took him into custody. ***UPDATE - suspect in custody***After following several leads, we were able to track the suspect down to a house. Police arrested Matthew Hall in Broken Arrow just before 1 p.m.Ware is charged with two counts of shooting with intent to kill and possession of a firearm. After Sgt. Johnson's passing, Ware is now facing a homicide charge. Both Ware and Hall are being held with no bond. Ware will appear in court Thursday and Hall will appear on Sept. 2. Zarkeshan completed training recently and had only been doing solo patrols for the last six weeks. He is in critical condition. "Here in Tulsa, we are going to have to pray." TPD Chief Franklin said. "Inside this uniform, I'm just like you. The only difference is we do a different job then you do. For us, we are just a part of the community as you are. We need community support. That's what is going to get us through this," Franklin continuedBynum posted a message on Facebook saying, "Two of our heroes in the Tulsa Police Department were shot early this morning." He added, "Please pray for our officers, their families and the surgeons." Bynum visited the hospitals on Monday. Governor Kevin Stitt issued a statement on the incident: I ask Oklahomans to join the First Lady and me in praying for the officers who were injured, their families and the Tulsa Police Department. This senseless attack is a reminder of the dangers our law enforcement officers face daily.
