SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Saturday, Dec. 8 will be the tenth year since a tragedy in the heart of University City.Four people died in 2008 when an FA-18 military jet crashed into homes in the San Diego community west of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.Rebecca Cosford was in her home and heard two loud noises. The first was the pilot blowing out the plane’s canopy and ejecting. The second sound was the crash.“One was popping, then a massive explosion that shook the whole house,” Cosford remembers.Cosford and her husband ran outside to see a “large column of smoke”.Teresa Rizzo not only heard it: she felt it. Someone yelled at her to stay back and told her a plane had crashed."I just thought, 'That was an airplane?’ That was an actual airplane that fell out of the sky and exploded around the corner from my house?"Marine pilot Dan Neubauer’s parachute landed a block west of the crash site after he ejected. He had been trying to reach MCAS Miramar on one engine, but his second engine failed. The FA-18 dropped like a stone.The four lives lost on the ground were Dong Yoon’s family."I believe my wife and two babies and my mother-in-law are in heaven with God," Yoon said after the crash.Neighbors had tried to help when disaster struck. Alain Blanc had a cell phone in one hand, 911 on the line. His other hand was holding a hose as firefighters arrived."There are moments we don't have time to be scared, you react! I heard this incredible bang, the earth shook, and I was outside. How I got there, don't ask me," said Blanc.Today, two new homes stand where the other two were destroyed. One thing is the same: the sound of roaring jets."Not that far but when they're close, when it's the same elements as it was that day: overcast, the middle of the day, cool temperatures and a plane flies really close by, my heart still races."Many neighbors told 10News they plan to attend a memorial which will be held Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m. at University Village Park. 1982

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Several people were hospitalized after they reportedly fell ill at a Sorrento Valley pharmaceutical company.San Diego Fire-Rescue crews were called to 6769 Mesa Ridge just before 2 p.m. Tuesday to reports that a 60-year-old man was passed out outside the business, Inovio Pharmaceuticals.Bystanders reportedly began CPR and used a defibrillator on the man.Crews say that additional people were transported after falling ill. In all, two people transported themselves to Scripps Memorial Hospital while two others were transported by emergency crews.Their conditions are not known at this time.SDFD said they believe the victims became sick after eating food brought in by an employee.  727

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Several US Navy Sailors put on their uniforms on their days off to help deliver meals to San Diego-area military veterans. Meals on Wheels President Debbie Case said they deliver 500,000 meals every year and about 42 percent of those meals go to veterans.“To see the active duty and the respect that they have for these veterans is incredible,” said Case.Meals on Wheels makes 1,400 deliveries every day. That means more than 500 are for veterans.Case added they also started delivering to disabled veterans no matter how old they are or when they ended their service. 610

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some parents at a San Diego Unified School District campus are asking district officials for help with challenges they say are brought on by new, later start times.This fall, three schools implemented SDUSD's "Healthy Start Times" program, beginning classes at 8:35 a.m. The District has cited multiple studies that show later start times have positive effects on the health and academic performances of students.RELATED: Three San Diego schools to switch to later start times in 2019But some parents say the District isn't doing enough to help families who still have to drop their students off at school before 8 am, so the parents can get to work on time.Angel Caturay is one of those parents. He drops his son, Angel Miles, off at the San Diego School for Creative and Performing Arts at 7:30 a.m. each morning. Angel Miles then has to wait outside of the school's locked gates until 8 am.10News went by the school at 7:40 a.m. on Thursday morning and found more than two dozen other students also waiting. Some said they had been there since 7 am. Aside from one parking lot attendant, there was no adult supervision.The gates at SCPA don't open until 8 a.m. School begins at 8:35 a.m."Who's responsible?" Caturay asks. "When you drop your kids off, you feel the school should be responsible while they're here at school."In a statement, a district spokesperson told 10News that, "Students left without supervision is a safety risk... the principal has been working with parents to help them identify solutions."Caturay wants to know if the library, cafeteria or classroom could be opened for students to wait in. His son says it's challenging to use that time for homework."There's a lot of groups just sitting down and talking," says Angel Miles. "There are no tables. You're bending your back over, and that can get uncomfortable."The District addressed the issue in a letter to parents last year. Part of it reads, "just because some parents may be unable to provide healthy sleep hours for their teens does not mean that school district policy should prevent all of their teen students from getting the amount of sleep doctors say they need to be healthy and safe."The District plans to have every high school go to the later start times by next fall. Meanwhile, the California Legislature recently passed SB 328. The new law will require all middle and high schools in the state to start later in the day. It specifies start times no earlier than 8 am for middle schools, and 8:30 a.m. for high schools.Governor Newsom has not signed the bill yet, and it wouldn't go into effect until 2022. Former Governor Jerry Brown vetoed a similar bill in 2018, saying start times are an issue that individual school districts need to decide.RELATED: Proposed bill would require later start times for middle and high schoolsCaturay says he understands the decision that SDUSD made. When he emailed the principal at SCPA, he was told about the District's bus program. District files show that costs 0 per year for the first student, 0 for the second. Caturay says he can't afford that, and neither can many other families.He hopes the District can do a little more to accommodate families like his. "It would be nice if they could open up the library," he says. "At least they (the students) could get some work done, study work ahead of time. Then their time wouldn't be wasted just sitting here." 3429

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some of our toughest Marines have four legs. These military working dogs are trained and trusted to protect service members and civilians overseas and at home."The bond between handler and K-9 is indescribable. When I was assigned a dog, I could look at my dog and know what it needed before it could tell me, and vice versa," said Lt. Kristopher Evers, part of the military police force at Camp Pendleton. All military dogs begin their journey at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, selected for their willingness to work. After basic training, they're sent to a new post and assigned a handler. K-9's trained in the Military Working Dog Program at Camp Pendleton go on to either serve alongside military police on the base or in conflicts overseas. The Marine Corps has nearly 300 working dogs; the entire military has about 2,700, according to the United States War Dogs Association, Inc. Handlers use the Agility Course at Camp Pendleton to train K-9 Marines to perform outside their comfort zone, giving them the confidence to do the job. Dogs are tasked with jobs like detecting explosives, narcotics, and apprehending suspects."Training is consistent, it's every day, and it's all the time," said Evers. Evers says the dogs are very much Marines and an important part of their military family. One of the most famous K-9 heroes is Lucca, remembered for leading 400 patrols with no human casualties on her watch. Lucca retired after losing her leg to an IED and passed away in 2018."They're special, in my mind, they're special. They love to work, they love coming to work, they love seeing their handler, they love getting in that patrol car, they love putting that collar on - and they're just always happy, these dogs live in the moment," said Evers.
