AUORA, Colo. – The coronavirus epidemic is having a major impact on small Asian-run businesses in the United States. Some places say the number of customers has dropped by half. The Pacific Ocean Market has been a staple of Asian American businesses in Aurora, Colorado, for years."There is such a variety of places to eat and different types of food and things you don't normally see in the ordinary market," said one customer of the market. Within the last month, business at the market has been somewhat of a roller coaster ride since the new coronavirus first surfaced. "With people panicking across the country, we've heard stories in New York saying there's no more rice and Atlanta there's no more rice, so people have been continuing to stock up on that," said Betty Lam, one of the two daughters of the owner of the market. The outbreak began in China and quickly spread across Asia. Since then, a growing number of coronavirus cases have been confirmed in the U.S. and customers seem to be staying away from Asian American businesses as a precaution.According to The New York Times, business at shops that sell Asian products dropped by 70 percent in the first two weeks of February. The Chinese Merchants Association in San Francisco says foot traffic in their Chinatown district dropped by 50 percent."It's a little off and on right now,” said Lam. “We're not too sure how it's going to go." Lam says she’s already heard of businesses being affected."From the restaurants we work with, we have seen and heard that they're not doing very good and there have been a lot of customers and loyal customers who haven't been going to their restaurants due to the coronavirus." Canadian police said they are open to the possibility that a young couple's slaying is connected to the case of two missing Canadian teens in the same region of British Columbia.The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said last week that there was no evidence to suggest the deaths of an American woman and her Australian boyfriend were linked to the teens' disappearance -- or to the body of an unidentified man found near the teens' burning car.But on Monday, the RCMP acknowledged "growing community concerns" about the two investigations some 290 miles apart in the sparsely populated region.Cpl. Chris Manseau said it was unusual for investigators in northern British Columbia to have two "complex and dynamic" cases at once, adding it was "possible" that the two cases are linked. They were driving the red and grey Dodge pickup truck with a sleeping camper that was found on fire the next day, about 31 miles south of Dease Lake, the RCMP said."Kam and Bryer have periodically connected with family and friends over the past week and it is possible that they are now in an area without cell coverage," said Dawn Roberts of British Columbia's RCMP Communications."However, we have found their vehicle and have not been able to locate either of them at this time. We are asking for Kam or Bryer to connect with police right away and let us know you are okay. Businesses have been adding new features like ultraviolet light cleaning to offices. Now, it could be coming to vehicles in response to COVID-19 concerns. A third of car shoppers say they're more likely to consider air quality features for their next vehicle than before the pandemic, according to a survey from Cox Automotive.“Historically, I think people had this conception of if it looks clean, it must be clean right, but now going forward, the question is well it looks clean but is it sanitized?” said Pratik Patel, President of RideKleen. “And I think for people to feel safe getting into the car, knowing that OK there was some process of sanitization or some cleaning process that could protect them from bacteria and viruses is going to be important going forward.”Car companies are looking into systems like including a fixed UV light that would provide sanitization treatment while you're inside. The feature could also be integrated into the car's air conditioning system, so as the air circulates, it would continuously sanitize.“I would be shocked if car makers are not thinking about this for the future,” said Patel. “It doesn't exist today, so right now it is really third parties implementing either it's a service or a component that's added onto the vehicle.”Patel points out ride share vehicles are especially a concern with the number of people getting in and out of them frequently, and the cars not necessarily being disinfected between each customer.
