It is a multimillion-dollar attempt to shield app-based drivers in the state from a labor law, known as AB5, that makes companies give more benefits and wage protections to their workers. (AP) — An attorney and immigrant rights activist is the first person living in the U.S. illegally to be named to a statewide appointment in the nation's most populous state, California's Senate leader announced Wednesday.The Senate Rules Committee appointed Lizbeth Mateo to be an adviser on college access and financial aid. Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de Leon framed the decision as a rebuke of Republican President Donald Trump's immigration policies.As a member of the Student Opportunity and Access Program Project Grant Advisory Committee, Mateo will advise the California Student Aid Commission to help low-income and marginalized people attend college. Gavin Newsom has signed a law intended to counter Trump administration plans to increase oil and gas production on protected public land.The measure bars any California leasing authority from allowing pipelines or other oil and gas infrastructure to be built on state property. RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A judge has ordered rapper Kanye West's name to be removed from presidential ballots in Virginia. Richmond Circuit Court Judge Joi Taylor issued an order Thursday saying West was disqualified because he had failed to meet the requirement that 13 people in the state pledge support for his campaign. The West campaign submitted 13 such "Elector Oaths," but the judge declared 11 of them invalid. The judge added that some were obtained "by improper, fraudulent and/or misleading means." 514
