CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) — South Texas is bracing for flooding after Hanna roared ashore from the Gulf of Mexico as a Category 1 hurricane, bringing winds, rain and storm surge to a part of the country coping with a spike in coronavirus cases. The National Hurricane Center says the first hurricane of the 2020 Atlantic cyclone season made landfall twice Saturday afternoon within the span of a little over an hour.Forecasters downgraded Hanna to a tropical storm early Sunday.Meteorologists say the biggest concern from Hanna is expected to be flooding from heavy rainfall. Many parts of Texas, including areas near where Hanna came ashore, have been dealing with a recent surge in coronavirus cases. Here are the 4 AM CDT Key Messages for Tropical Storm Hanna. CLEVELAND — Connie Culp, the first recipient of a partial face transplant in the U.S., has died at age 57, the Cleveland Clinic confirmed Thursday.Dr. Frank Papay, chair of the Cleveland Clinic’s Dermatology and Plastic Surgery Institute, who was also part of her surgical team, confirmed Culp's death in a statement.“Connie was an incredibly brave, vibrant woman and an inspiration to many. Her strength was evident in the fact that she had been the longest-living face transplant patient to date. She was a great pioneer and her decision to undergo a sometimes-daunting procedure is an enduring gift for all of humanity,” Papay said in his statement.Culp made history in 2008 when she became the first patient in the U.S. to receive a face transplant. At the time of the surgery, 40-year-old Culp underwent an initial 22-hour procedure after her husband shot her in the face.A Cleveland Clinic surgical team integrated functional facial components and numerous tissue types, including skin, muscles, bony structures, arteries, veins and nerves – encompassing about 77 square inches of transplanted tissue. Her cause of death is currently unknown. This story was originally published by Kaylyn Hlavaty on WEWS in Cleveland. 1229

COVID-19 has killed more than 50,000 people in nursing homes and long-term care facilities. That is at least 40% of all U.S. coronavirus deaths. The White House put in new measures recently to better protect residents.“The numbers are continuing to rise. We're just beginning to get some of the numbers out of some of the states and so this is a real outrage,” said Bill Sweeney, Senior Vice President of Government Affairs at AARP. “It didn't have to be this way, and this is a national disgrace.”AARP says required virus case data from facilities is happening too late. They're about a week behind and testing isn't consistent. Some facilities are still having issues with PPE, including training staff to wear it properly. Both Republicans and Democrats want to give more help to nursing homes in the next relief bill.AARP is concerned about the lack of inspections and oversight. It worries some facilities will get immunity from lawsuits.“Without inspections, without the ombudsman being able to go in and find out what’s going on in the facilities, without family visits being allowed, there's been no accountability at all and if they give immunity to these nursing homes, there won’t ever be accountability,” said Sweeney. “There will never be justice for families whose loved ones were treated poorly.”Before the pandemic, AARP says eight out of ten nursing homes were cited for infection control problems.Meanwhile, AARP encourages family members to call their representative in Congress if they are worried about their loved one and are not getting answers. 1573

CNN and the New York Times both reported on Friday that Vice President Mike Pence’s several members of the Secret Service’s team tested positive for the virus during his recent trip to Arizona.CNN reported that eight members of Pence’s team had positive COVID-19 tests. Meanwhile, the New York Times reported that two members of Pence’s Secret Service travel team tested positive. The Secret Service has not confirmed the reports.Pence had planned an event in Yuma, Arizona, on Tuesday. Instead, Pence made a brief visit to Phoenix on Wednesday to meet with public health officials.CNN reported that the eight members of Pence’s team remained holed up in Arizona as of Friday evening, citing two sources. The reports come as both Pence and President Donald Trump have ramped up their public schedules, holding rallies and public events. The events come after both Pence and Trump largely remained in the Washington, D.C.., area during the spring as the coronavirus began to spread in earnest nationally. As Friday’s reports surfaced, Trump, along with the usual large contingent of Secret Service employees, traveled to Mount Rushmore for a firework display. 1164
