As millions of Americans head to the polls today for the last day of voting, a group of artists has been deployed to help them pass the time. With a strum of her bow, violinist Paula Johannessen is off.“Some poll workers were really excited, too, that they were just happy to hear music,” said Johannessen. But today, her performance is dedicated to the American voter.“I played a lot of Irish music so far, and I'll continue to some jigs reels and waltzes,” she said. It’s called Play for the Vote, a non-partisan effort by artists and performers to bring music to the ballot box.“It's nice to remind people that we are still here, we're still performing, we're still here to share what we have with everybody,” explained Johannessen.Boston-based cellist Mike Block came up with the idea after the contentious first presidential debate.“I was just kind of thinking about what the candidates were saying about, not just who you should vote for, but the stress around the process of voting itself,” said Block. With long lines, health concerns, and the fate of the country hanging in the balance, Block decided musicians could help ease the anxiety.“I think it's also this is going to serve a very important need for audiences, said Block.“Music has this unique power to create shared unifying experiences and we haven't really had that this year.”He recruited 600 musicians to perform classical, folk, bluegrass, jazz, rock and more without a political leaning. They will play in 48 states and the District of Columbia. All of it is for voters stuck in long lines, fulfilling their civic duty.“It's always been a melting pot of music, as well as cultures here, and it's really cool just to be able to communicate with anyone anywhere through music,” said Johannessen.“I think encountering this at a voting location is really going to remind people of the culture and all of the things that bring us together in society,” said Block. It’s a good reminder of what we have in common today, no matter who we vote for. 2016

At least one airline is starting to pull back on their cleaning regimen. Southwest crews are limiting their between-flight cleanings and leaving most of the passenger areas for the overnight cleaning crew, according to reports.Following the coronavirus outbreak in March and subsequent travel bans, airlines touted their stepped-up cleaning protocols as passengers returned.Starting in August, Southwest is focusing on lavatories and tray tables between flights, leaving seat belts, arm rests and other areas for the overnight cleaning crew, Southwest representative Ro Hawthorne told the Dallas Morning News."Since flight schedules have increased, other areas of the aircraft will be disinfected during our overnight cleaning process, when Southwest Teams spend six to seven hours per aircraft cleaning all interior surfaces," Hawthorne said in a statement.“As always, Southwest will monitor customer and employee feedback as we adapt to the new normal in air travel, while ensuring we keep safety as our top priority,” the statement continued. In March, Southwest announced their cleaning program included "interior windows and shades, every seat belt buckle, passenger service units (including the touch buttons that control reading lights and vents that direct personal air), as well as seat surfaces, tray tables, armrests, etc."The change to cleaning protocol will reduce the time an aircraft spends on the ground between flights, the airline told flight attendants in a memo obtained by CNN. 1505

Atlanta police released images late Sunday of a second person of interest in the fatal shooting of an 8-year-old girl on the Fourth of July. Authorities are also offering a ,000 reward for information in the death of Secoriea Turner. At least two shooters were believed to be responsible for her death. Police had released a short video of the first person of interest last week. Photos were released Sunday night of the second person of interest.According to Crime Stoppers in Atlanta, the preliminary investigation suggests the young girl was riding in a car with her mother and an adult friend when they were confronted by a group of people blocking the entrance to a parking lot. At some point, someone in the group opened fire on the car, hitting it several times and striking the child. The driver headed to a nearby hospital, and Turner died from her injuries. Both persons of interest are seen in the images carrying rifles. The fatal shooting happened near the Wendy's where Rayshard Brooks was shot and killed by a police officer. 1051

As the Democrats kicked off Night No. 1 of its four-night virtual national convention, George Floyd’s brother Philonise Floyd spoke out against his brother’s death.Philonise Floyd led the convention in a moment of silence in honor of his brother and others who have died as victims of "hate and injustice.""George should be alive today,” Philonise Floyd said. “Breonna Taylor should be alive today. Ahmaud Arbery should be alive today. Eric Garner should be alive today. Stephon Clark, Atatiana Jefferson, Sandra Bland—they should all be alive today. So it's up to us to carry on the fight."While most of those named by Philonise Floyd died while in police custody, Arbery was killed in a shooting by civilians. Three Georgia men, Travis McMichael, Gregory McMichael, and William "Roddie" Bryan were charged in connection with Arbery's death. His death came to light after it took 74 days before anyone was charged in connection with his death. Preceding Floyd at the virtual convention was Muriel Bowser, Washington D.C.’s Democratic mayor who called out President Donald Trump for using federal agents to deploy tear gas on a crowd of Black Lives Matter protests. During the height of the protests, federal agents used tear gas to disperse a crowd moments before Trump emerged from the White House to visit a burned out church across the street from the White House.“Where we were peacefully protesting, Donald Trump was plotting,” she said. “He stood in front of one of our most treasured houses of worship and held a Bible for a photo op. He sent troops in camouflage into our streets. He sent tear gas into the air—federal helicopters, too. I knew if he did this to D.C., he would do it to your city or your town.”During Bowser’s remarks, Trump’s campaign panned Bowser for saying she was “proud” of protesters. While Bowser wouldn’t initially commit to removing a “Defund the Police” mural from a D.C. street, city crews have since paved over the mural. 1967
