SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Driving to San Diego Comic-Con or near the downtown area in July? Make sure you know just where to go.If you're attending to Comic-Con from July 17 to July 21, you have several options for parking, public transportation, ride sharing, or shuttling in and around downtown San Diego. The closure affects vehicles, bikes, skateboards, and dockless bicycles and scooters.Those on foot in the area will need a Comic-Con badge to access the convention center's front drive, adjacent terraces, and sidewalks.Detour and access mapCOMIC-CON SHUTTLEComic-Con is providing a free shuttle for those staying in Mission Valley and downtown. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Despite the pandemic, Veterans Village of San Diego held its annual Stand Down event that helps hundreds of veterans facing homelessness every year.From a glance, this year’s event may seem different. Not as many people were there and stations were more spaced out than normal. But the mission remained the same, reaching out to veterans who are at risk or homeless.Darcy Pavich, the Stand Down director, says the goal is to provide Veterans with the resources they need. Whether it’s housing services, medical referrals, or employment services."It’s difficult for them right now to connect with the services because so many doors are closed," says Pavich.What is also different this year is making sure COVID-19 health guidelines are followed. From requiring masks, to hand sanitizing, and making sure everyone practiced social distancing.This took a lot more planning and preparation to make sure Veterans and Volunteers stayed safe.But even with the changes, Pavich says the simple gesture of reaching out to Veterans made a big impact on those that showed up. "It brings a smile to them and they may not have a lot to smile about right now," she said. "I can never find a good reason why a Veteran should not be housed, safe, and comfortable in their own life." 1292

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hiring is increasing in San Diego County with local employers adding jobs in all industries, the San Diego Workforce Partnership reported. The most recent U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics show unemployment dropped to 3 percent in April, as San Diego County gained 7,800 jobs month-over-month. The largest increase was posted in the construction field, with 2,200 jobs added. The boom was likely due to improving weather in April after an unusually rainy winter, experts said. Other growing industries included Education and Health, and Professional and Business, which added 1,000 jobs. The Government and Leisure and Hospitality fields each grew by 900 jobs. The smallest growth was reported in the Information field, with 100 jobs added in April. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Do you know how to survive a rip current? The common occurrence at San Diego beaches accounts for 80 percent of all rescues, the U.S. Lifesaving Association reports. Rip currents are currents of water that flow out from shore, potentially pulling swimmers and surfers away from land, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. 63 people in California died in rip currents between 1999 and 2013, second only to Florida in fatalities. You can greatly increase your chances of survival by swimming at a beach with lifeguards, the USLA says. The odds of drowning while swimming at a USLA-affiliated lifeguard protected beach is 1 in 18 million, the group claims.Anyone in the water - or thinking about getting into the water - should look for a gap of seemingly calm water between areas of breaking waves, a difference in water color, or a line of foam or debris moving out to sea. What to do if you’re caught in a rip current:*Don’t try to swim against the current*Swim parallel to the shoreline before trying to head back in to the beach*Float or tread water if the current circulates back toward the shore*If you can’t make it back to shore, yell and wave for helpLifeguards also encourage you to call 911 or get help from a professional. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For the first time in decades, the Port of San Diego is putting forth a comprehensive update to its master plan. A port spokesperson says the effort began in 2013 and has been a very thoughtful and open process. However, some residents in the county are just learning about the plan. In April, the Port published a more than 300-page draft of the master plan. "Ninety percent of the people that we speak to had no idea that this plan had been put forth. We have been out at the local grocery stores, going door-to-door, we've been posting here on the path because these are the places where we're going to reach the people who use this area the most," said Cameron Lilley, a lifelong Point Loma resident. Lilley has significant concerns with Shelter Island proposals, including:Up to 1600 new hotel rooms70,000 square feet of retail and restaurant spaceRemoving private and historic docks"Parking is a huge issue already, bringing more tourism to this area will negatively impact the residents who live and use it," said Lilley.On Tuesday she was joined by family and friends at La Playa Trail, encouraging people to give feedback to the Port by the July 31 deadline. They've created a group, Save Point Loma, to try and educate the community. "We're all out here united in this cause," said Lilley.The Port says it has been very transparent throughout the entire process, not only making the draft available to the public but holding community meetings. A spokesperson tells 10News they've used social media, the radio, and community paper ads to try and get people involved. And the Port says it wants to hear from the community moving forward. After receiving initial feedback, they will continue to hold community meetings and will later put forth a revised draft. The comment period for the Master Plan draft goes through July 31.
