TOKYO, July 27 (Xinhua) -- China and Japan on Tuesday conducted the first round of negotiation on the implementation of the principles of consensus concerning the East China Sea issue.Present at the talks were Ning Fukui, director general of the Chinese Foreign Ministry's Boundary and Ocean Affairs Department, and Akitaka Saiki, director general of the Japanese Foreign Ministry's Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau, Natural Resources.In a positive, candid and practical atmosphere, the two sides exchanged views on the implementation of the principles of consensus.And the two sides agreed to make concerted efforts to gradually accelerate the process of implementing the principles of consensus through friendly consultations and attain the common goal of turning the East China sea into a sea of "peace, cooperation and friendship."The decision to hold the negotiation was made by Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and his Japanese counterpart Okada Katsuya after a meeting on the sidelines of the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting in Hanoi, according to a press release from the Chinese foreign ministry Thursday.

BEIJING, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev discussed disasters and bilateral relations during a telephone conversation Tuesday.Medvedev conveyed his heartfelt condolences to China over its worst mudslides in decades and the great loss of life and property, expressing belief the Chinese government and people would overcome all difficulties and prevail over the disaster.He hoped the people injured would make a quick recovery and the mudslides-hit area would rebuild soon, noting that Russia was willing to provide assistance and support for China.Hu said the Chinese government had reacted immediately to the disaster in Zhouqu County of China's Gansu Province and was fully focused on the rescue and relief operations.Safeguarding the safety of civilians was the Chinese government's top priority and it had tried its best to rescue the people stricken by the Aug. 8 mudslides, which have left 1,254 people killed and 490 others missing so far, he said.Currently, relocation of the people affected, rescue and treatment of the injured, epidemic prevention, and reconstruction of infrastructure were underway in an urgent but orderly manner, he said.Hu also expressed China's appreciation of the Russian government and people after President Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin had been quick to send their condolences and offered help, respectively.China was also greatly concerned by Russia's deadly wildfires and identified with Russia over its great loss of life and property, said the Chinese president, adding that China had offered assistance.Under the staunch leadership of the Russian government, the Russian people did their best to fight the wildfire and effectively safeguarded the safety of its people and property, said Hu, who once again sent condolences to Russia on behalf of the Chinese government and people.

BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- China hopes the United States will take an objective, rational and just view towards China's national defense policy and the development of its armed forces, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang here on Thursday.Qin's comment came in response to a question on China's attitude towards a U.S. military officer's remarks on China's military development.The Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen said in a speech to the Asia Society's annual dinner that he was now "genuinely concerned" about "the gap as wide as what seems to be forming between China's stated intent and its military programs."Responding to the remarks, Qin urged the U.S. side to do more to build military relations with China, rather than harming them, so to ensure regional peace, stability and security.Qin said the sole purpose of China's defense policy is self-defense and its military is being developed in a peaceful way.China's development will not pose a threat to any country and anyone, he stressed, adding "We will not threaten and invade others."China opposes hegemonism, he said. TAIPEI, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Governor of east China's Zhejiang Province Lu Zushan started an eight-day visit to Taiwan Wednesday with the aim of deepening economic and cultural cooperation between the two regions.Under the theme "Visiting Friends, Conducting Exchanges and Cooperation," the delegation will launch cooperation programs with Taiwanese counterparts in finance, agriculture, tourism, culture and education.The delegation will learn about Taiwan's experience in environment protection, disaster response and relief, and public services at the grassroots level.The delegation will also visit residential communities, villages and enterprises to communicate with local residents.Apart from provincial government officials, the delegation also includes entrepreneurs. One of the entrepreneurs is Ma Yun, CEO of Zhejiang-based Alibaba Group, the parent of Alibaba.com, the global e-commerce site for small and medium businesses that connects buyers and sellers.During a meeting between Lu and the Taiwan-based Kuomintang's (KMT) honorary chairman, Wu Poh-hsiung, Wednesday, both sides expressed their hopes to increase the number of Zhejiang residents visiting the island this year.Nearly 130,000 Zhejiang residents visited Taiwan last year, accounting for about 20 percent of the Chinese mainland's total, according to Lu.Both Lu and Wu expected the number of Zhejiang visitors to exceed 180,000 this year.Zhejiang is where many Taiwan people come from."More than one million Taiwanese people are natives of Zhejiang," Lu said.The province is also a magnet for Taiwanese investment. The trade volume between Zhejiang and Taiwan hit 9.06 billion U.S. dollars last year, according to Lu.Since the beginning of this year, leading officials from various municipalities and provinces - Shanghai, Hubei, Fujian, Guizhou, Qinghai, Shandong and Sichuan - and the ministries of commerce and agriculture have led delegations to Taiwan to boost cooperation and exchanges with the island.
