SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — PETA is taking aim at SeaWorld once again, this time hoping to put a stop to the parks' dolphin shows.Officials held a press conference Wednesday to call out the park for what they called "dangerous," "circus-style" dolphins shows. The group argues trainers use dolphins "as surfboards" and have caused "open wounds and extensive scarring" on the animals."SeaWorld ceded to public pressure and said that it would phase out its circus-style orca shows, but dozens of other dolphins are still packed into shallow tanks, forcibly bred, and used as surfboards and launch pads in its shows," Heather Rally, a PETA Foundation veterinarian, said. "PETA is calling on SeaWorld to end these demeaning tricks and stop standing on dolphins' backs and faces."Rally, "Blackfish" director Gabriela Cowperthwaite, and behavioral biologist Dr. Toni Frohoff presented a report Wednesday in regards to their observations at the parks. The three argued that the shows, which are performed at all three of SeaWorld's parks, risk damage to dolphins' lower jaws. The group says this, in turn, can harm joints, strain muscles, and damage the animals' hearing.SeaWorld held its own press conference in response. In a statement, Dr. Hendrik Nollens, vice president of veterinary services at SeaWorld and Busch Gardens parks, called PETA's conference a publicity stunt, adding their paper's claims had no foundation:Their findings are presented in a white paper, which is the equivalent of an online blog, which is not peer-reviewed. They are also presented in a press conference instead of a scientific journal, in the presence of a moviemaker, which should be a red flag to all of us. Make no mistake, at SeaWorld, we are the animal advocates, and the difference is we actually have marine mammal and dolphin expertise; you cannot perform a veterinary exam from the stands.None of these behaviors are a veterinary or animal health concern. We have never diagnosed any injury associated with performing these behaviors, whether during presentations or interactions. If we did, we would have eliminated them by now. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Navy Region Southwest has a brand new, state of the art headquarters on land that was recently a barren lot, and they didn’t have to pay for it.The 15-acre plot sits on Pacific Highway near the USS Midway and has been owned by the Navy for about a hundred years. Navy Region Southwest Executive Director Joe Stuyvesant said it was once a hub for ships.“Ships would come in and refuel, replenish, resupply so it was mostly supply warehousing and things that were here,” he said.RELATED: Massive biotech hub planned for San Diego's waterfrontEventually, ships stopped coming to the area and instead stopped at other nearby bases. The warehouses that were built remained, and the Navy turned those into office buildings. Now, just one warehouse stands. This is the old building for Navy offices and will soon be torn down now that the new headquarters opened in October.Stuyvesant estimated the cost of their new building at around 5,000,000, explaining the deal they made so the Navy did not have to pay for the facility.“In return for leasing that land to the developer, they would build the Navy a new headquarters building,” he said.Manchester Financial Group signed a lease on the land in 2006, agreeing to fund the 17-story, 373,000-square-foot building. The inside of the building features historic Navy photos, offices, conference space, a gym for employees, and the oceanfront view. A restaurant for the public will also be added to the first floor.Construction on the new Navy facility started in 2018 and ended in 2020. Now, the last remaining warehouse that once housed the Navy offices is set to be torn down.“It really as underutilized and frankly not an attractive parcel to be really on the front doorstep of San Diego,” said Stuyvesant.Earlier in 2020, Manchester sold part of the lot to IQHQ, which is currently building a science hub. Manchester still holds part of the property and plans to build a hotel and plaza on that space.Stuyvesant said this deal is a win-win because the Navy got a new facility that they would not otherwise be able to fund, and the city will benefit from a nicer view and the taxes that come from the property.“The money that we have for facilities really needs to be focused on building piers, building electrical infrastructure, building hangars for the aircrafts, repairing runways,” said Stuyvesant. 2377

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One man is behind bars after a series of events in Rancho Penasquitos, including nearly running over a firefighter. Around 2:30 p.m. California Highway Patrol received a report of a reckless vehicle on SR-76 near Cole Grade Road Monday. The blue Toyota RAV4 was reported after unsafely passing vehicles and speeding in the area. Shortly after, CHP reported that the driver - Falahi Abrahim - was involved in a crash and started a brush fire.Shortly after Cal Fire responded to the fire, 37-year-old Abrahim from fled the scene - nearly hitting the firefighter who was trying to help him.Police officers followed, but Abrahim refused to stop and a pursuit began. The pursuit continued westbound on SR-76 to I-15 and transitioned to I-15 Southbound. The vehicle continued to flee from officers on I-15 Southbound and exited the freeway at Camino Del Norte where the vehicle progressed eastbound.During the chase Abrahim failed to stop for two red lights at separate intersections and officers discontinued the pursuit in the interest of public safety.A San Diego Police Department helicopter continued to follow the car, communicating Abrahim's location to the CHP. At 3:11 p.m. the driver stopped near the 10000 block of Carmel Mountain Road. After a short foot pursuit, Abrahim was taken into custody and arrested under suspicion of driving under the influence of a drug and felony evading charges.The incident involving the assault of the firefighter at the collision scene is still under investigation. 1572
