JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. — It’s easy to spot deer or wild turkeys along Parmalee Gulch Road north of Highway 285 in Jefferson County. But what's catching the eyes of speeding drivers now is a creature of myth and legend.On Ron DiDonato's Indian Hills property is a 5-foot pink pig with wings that flap, attached to a 10-foot pole.“I knew this would be an attention-getter and it definitely has been,” DiDonato said. “At first, I didn’t know if it was going to be good or not because they were stopping in the street to look at it."DiDonato said he decided to create the flying pig to play off the saying that the only time traffic would slow down on Parmalee Gulch Road is when pigs fly.“I couldn’t go out, couldn’t do anything, so I decided to do this just to slow the traffic down and it sure has helped,” DiDonato said. “I’m not an artist of any sort, so I did papier-maché, and to make it weatherproof I fiberglassed it. Then painted it pink and put lipstick on it.”Ron needed newspaper for his papier-maché project, which his granddaughter helped with, so he contacted Terri Wiebold, publisher of the Castle Pines Connection.“Having done some pandemic purging ourselves, The Castle Pines Connection had set aside some archived papers to recycle, and we were happy to oblige DiDonato’s request," Wiebold said.DiDonato said so far, it seems to be working — people are so surprised to see the flying pig, they slow down to take it all in.DiDonato said he blames the speeding problem on the growth that has been coming as fast as the drivers down these foothill roads and in this part of Jefferson County.Mike Taplin, public information officer for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s office said he doesn't know if the flying pig has helped slow speeding traffic."If people post something or do something to help remind drivers to follow traffic laws and drive with safety in mind, we do not have a problem," he said. "The public should not attempt to enforce traffic laws themselves — that needs to be done by law enforcement agencies.”DiDonato said he plans to leave it up all winter and for as long as it keeps working to slow down drivers who like to push well past the 30 mph speed limit on the straight stretch of road through his neighborhood.“All my neighbors are really happy I did it. JULIAN, Calif., (KGTV)— Firefighters in Julian are hoping to keep San Diego’s last volunteer fire department alive, despite being voted to shut down last week. The Julian Cuyamaca Fire Protection District is now suing the County, alleging the decision to dissolve the department was made in secret meetings. The court hearing for Wednesday was postponed in Downtown San Diego after a judge recused himself from the case.Two weeks ago, Debbie Mushet voted to have the county take over the Julian Cuyamaca Fire Protection District [JCFPD]. “I definitely voted yes for it, and I thought that was the end of it,” Mushet said. In this special election, 56% of Julian residents voted to have the San Diego County Fire overtake the historic volunteer department. “It’s worked as long as I’ve been up here, but it doesn’t work anymore. There’s a time when things just need to change,” Mushet said. “The volunteers have done a great job ion the past, but it’s just the money wasn’t going to be there.”Despite losing the special election and a unanimous vote by the Local Agency Formation Commission to officially dissolve the department, volunteer firemen are not ready to give up. Attorney Cory Briggs, who represents JCFPD said that decision was made through secret meetings. Therefore, the election results and the commission votes are “null and void.” When the County transition team came to the station on Monday, protestors staged a sit-in, refusing the leave the premises. JCFPD said in a statement, the County sent armed Sheriffs Deputies to “intimidate the unarmed JCFPD personnel who were peaceful truing to secure their facilities and equipment while the new lawsuit works its way through the courts.”“CalFire and the Julian Fire Department that exists now, I don’t understand why we can’t coexist,” Debbie Hickey said. “Every time it’s been really good response times. They knew right where to come.”For years, Hickey has relied on the Julian Fire Department for emergency care for her ill husband. She said she trusts the locals more than an outsider who would be assigned to cover the Julian area. “If I was to call 9-1-1, I don’t know who will come, I don’t know what the response time will be, and that’s a very scary situation to be in,” Hickey said. “My husband is staying down in the city during this time because quite frankly, I’m scared to death to let him come home to Julian.”A volunteer fireman told 10News off camera that since Monday they have not been allowed to respond to emergency incidents. In fact, they said their radios were disconnected. In the meantime, all 9-1-1 calls are being handled by Cal-Fire Station 50, down the street from the JCFPD station.While there is no official sit-in happening now, there are still many volunteers at the station. Volunteer crews have barricaded their engines inside the garage with their SUV’s, to try to stop the county from towing their vehicles. Either way, Mushet said this back and forth is getting out of control. “Let the vote speak for itself, let the count come in, volunteers step back, and it’s over and done,” Mushet said. “This is ridiculous. They asked for the vote they got their vote, and they were not happy with the decision, so they’re refusing to give in and it’s just sad. I’ve never seen this town so divided.”Wednesday’s court hearing scheduled for 8:30 a.m. was delayed after the assigned judge recused himself from the case. No reason was given for his recusal. JOHNSON COUNTY, Kan. — Latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows the suicide rate among young people between the ages of 10 and 17 increased 70 percent from 2006 to 2016.“In all my years of community mental health, I’ve never once been afraid to open my email in the morning,” Tim DeWeese said. “Today I’m afraid to open my email to see that someone else has committed suicide or that there’s been another homicide or there’s been another shooting."For more than 20 years, DeWeese has been with Johnson County Mental Health in Kansas, and has seen vast changes from the time he’s started.“It seems like we can’t go a week or a couple days without seeing something, so that’s the hardest part,” DeWeese said.CDC data also showed while black youth killed themselves less than white youth, the increase rate was higher, 77 percent within that decade.In Kansas alone, the suicide rate is higher than the national average, with Johnson County being number one in the state.“More than one Kansan dies everyday from suicide,” DeWeese said.DeWeese said there could be a number of contributing factors.“Lack of availability of mental health resources,” DeWeese said. “Our country, our state, has not necessarily put an emphasis on funding mental health treatment.”He said the stigma surrounding mental health could also be playing a role.“When we see these mass shootings occur or anything bad happen, immediately that person says that person has a mental illness,” DeWeese said.He said this does nothing but further stigmatize a mental illness. “And it really promotes people not to seek treatment,” DeWeese said.John County Mental Health recently started providing free gun locks at the center.“If you can create a barrier such as a gun lock, then — if actually in those two minutes it would take to unlock the gun or to find the key — then a person may rethink that decision,” DeWeese said.He said he encourages anyone who may know someone who is struggling not be afraid to ask them how they’re feeling, if they feel like harming themselves, and to listen.For more on suicide prevention, click here.— 2161
