SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The ridesharing company, Lyft, is donating hundreds of thousands of dollars in ride credits to immigration groups throughout the country, including one in San Diego County. The company made the donation announcement on Monday, donating 0,000, calling the campaign "America is an Idea, Not a Geography." The Minority Humanitarian Foundation in Spring Valley received roughly ,000 in ride credits. The foundation's founder, Mark Lane, says the company's donation is a game changer for his organization. Lane explains that the money previously spent on rides can now go towards other things like food, clothing and other supplies. 10News spoke to multiple Lyft drivers in San Diego who said they wouldn't mind providing rides to migrants, as long as their pay didn't change. A few Lyft users told 10News they don't agree with Lyft's donation but said they would still continue to use the service.During the month of July, Lyft is also matching donations to RAICES up to ,000. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Three six-month-old wallaby joeys are being hand-raised at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park before they are old enough to be welcomed into the park’s mob of wallabies.Photos released by the zoo show the wallaby joeys spending time in their pouches where the zoo says they are most comfortable.The wallaby joeys, which currently weigh between two and three pounds each, are being bottle-fed.Once fully grown, wallaby females can weigh between 26 to 35 pounds.The wallabies will join numerous other red-necked wallabies and gray kangaroos in an exhibit at the soon-to-open Walkabout Australia. 616

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego man who claimed he punched a San Diego Police officer in self-defense was convicted on four counts Friday.Frederick Jefferson was arrested February 3 at Chicano Park in Barrio Logan. At the time, police were trying to disperse a crowd which had gathered as two groups debated the historical significance of the park. Barricades were in place, and dozens of officers were standing by to keep order.During a jailhouse interview with 10News, Jefferson said a San Diego Police officer asked him to get out the street. However, Jefferson said he didn’t want to walk with the protestors.RELATED: San Diego man claims he punched officer in self defenseJefferson said he tried talking to the officer but admitted he did not get out of the street.“When they got out of the car, I continued walking,” he said. “I told them I said, ‘I’m just going to keep walking on’ and as I kept walking on they came up behind me.”RELATED: Video: Demonstration between groups at Chicano Park becomes violentJefferson said an officer grabbed his shirt and swung a billy club.“I was afraid that if this dude got back a hold of me he was going to go town on me with the billy club," Jefferson said.San Diego Police Lt. Scott Wahl said Jefferson started fighting first.Jefferson admitted to 10News that he hit the officer twice in the face.“I swung and hit him to put distance between us and then he swung again and I swung again because I could not let this dude grab me.”Police said Jefferson broke bones in the officer’s face.“It was a very serious injury. It could have been much worse,” said Lt. Wahl.“If he got injured like really badly like they’re saying, I’m sorry for that,” offered Jefferson.Jefferson was convicted of four crimes, including force likely to cause great bodily injury on a police officer and resisting a police officer with force or violence 1905

There, a heap of sand sits waiting to become something more.When master sand sculptures from around the globe finally get their hands in the sand, a radical transformation begins.GALLERY: Works of art made from sand at US?Sand Sculpting ChallengeThe U.S. Sand Sculpting Challenge and Dimensional Art Expo is an invite-only competition for sculptors, six from the U.S. and six from other countries. Each artist brings their own vision, artistic sensibilities, and talent to the makeshift sandbox.Sculptures can reach up to 15 ft. tall and weigh more than 10,000 pounds in some cases. Perhaps just as astoundingly, all it takes is nothing more than sand and water (aside from an incredible talent.)For four days, San Diego's waterfront will host competitions between sculptors with more than ,000 in prize money at stake.MORE: Other events happening this Labor Day weekend in San DiegoReturning in 2018 will also be a team challenge, comprised of teams that won the former sand sculpting competition when it was hosted in Imperial Beach from 2000 to 2011.In addition to the competition, family-friendly activities such as live entertainment, a giant sandbox for kids, and rides will be on hand.
