For years, there has been a shortage of African American men teaching in public schools. Now, a university in Maryland hopes to become a nationwide model that gets more black men to the head of the class. Julius Davis is an associate professor at Bowie State University, located about 45 minutes outside Washington, D.C. He’s working on a lesson plan he hopes will impact the future of black students in Maryland. “I always knew the one thing I wanted to do was give back,” he says. This school year, Davis is in charge of a new effort to get more black males interested in teaching and ultimately, in front of the classroom. It could be a tough test. Black men make up less than two percent of teachers in the workforce nationwide, according to latest statistics by the Department of Education. “I think that there's a lot of negativity about what goes on in education and why people shouldn't pursue the career: low pay, issues with students,” he explains. Davis hopes to change that perception by getting high school boys excited about becoming teachers through conferences, trips and mentoring programs. It’ll be paid for with the help of a ,000 grant by the university system of Maryland. “Many black males express an interest in education early on. The problem is they're not engaged throughout their 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade years, so we lose them,” Davis says. For Davis, it's a way to pay it forward and remember the way black teachers helped him.“I would say they went above and beyond,” he recalls. “They pulled me to the side when I wasn't doing right and got me on track. They kept me focused. They wouldn't let me fail.” It’s a lesson Davis learned in high school that he now hopes to pass on to other students. 1749

From woodwork and sewing to basic assembly of kits, employees at the Mile High Workshop in Colorado are able to gain technical skills so they can transition into another job out in the community. The workshop serves as a stepping-stone for those facing barriers to work.“We do job training for folks who are coming out of prison, recovering from addiction, and rebuilding from homelessness,” Mile High Workshop Executive Director, Andy Magel, said. “And we do that by partnering with other businesses and doing contract work for them.”“In the last 5 years we’ve hired probably a few over 130 folks, and the vast majority of them have had experience with the criminal justice system,” Magel added.One of those is seamstress Antonette Smith."Something about this job makes you not even want to leave at the end of the day,” Smith said. Smith learned that even a misdemeanor conviction can alter someone's life.“Me and a family member got into a situation where the police were called. I was arrested and taken to the hospital. I woke up in the Denver city jail. I ended up pleading guilty to a misdemeanor II.”Smith says she only has a couple months left at the workshop and she’s nervous about what she’ll face when she applies for other jobs.“Where am I gonna be able to go and be accepted like here at Mile High. That’s one of my biggest fears,” Smith said.Attorney Jack Regenbogen with the Colorado Center on Law & Policy says one third of working-age adults have some sort of criminal history.That’s one reason why Ban the Box is gaining momentum across the country.“Ban the box is a national campaign to try to promote employment opportunities for people that have a criminal history,” Jack Regenbogen said.“Ban the Box” refers to the box commonly included on a job application that asks about somebody’s criminal history.“In many cases, this box is an automatic disqualifier. So many job applications are online today, and the second that somebody checks that box indicating a criminal history, it automatically ends their application. ‘Thank you for your time, you’re not qualified,'” Regenbogen said.Regenbogen says 35 states across the U.S. have enacted some sort of fair chance hiring policies. Most require public companies to take the box off the application, but some states have included private companies as well.“Each state that has passed ban the box has different nuances about who it applies to, and also, at what point in the hiring process a record can be considered,” Regenbogen said.Even though more states are taking initiative on Ban the Box, not every company agrees it’s a step forward. Professional Finance Company deals with debt collection. CEO Mike Shoop says the box is very necessary for his business. “It just helps us in our recruiting and hiring process to know upfront if somebody has committed a felony,” Shoop said.As of right now, Colorado state law requires that Professional Finance Company does not hire anyone who’s been convicted of a felony. That's because employees handle a lot of sensitive financial information.“We are a financial institution. We do handle financial transactions, and we do handle people’s personal identifiable information," Shoop said.If the box is taken away, Shoop says the company wouldn’t know somebody’s criminal history until the background check, which he claims would be a waste of time and resources for both parties, considering they wouldn’t legally be allowed to hire the person.Regenbogen says some states have considered that possibility and there are exceptions.“If the law says that they have to consider criminal history and cannot hire someone with a certain type of criminal history, then they can still ask on the application,” Regenbogen said.However, for a majority of businesses, that’s not the case. Regenbogen believes banning the box would improve society overall.“There are studies that show the number one predictor of whether someone is likely to reoffend and recommit a crime is whether they’re able to gain employment.”Those at Mile High Workshop certainly agree, which is why they’re trying to provide that second chance.“Nobody wants to be defined by the worst things they’ve done in their lives. We all have things we’re not proud of, and having the opportunity to grow from that and to learn and to prove that you are a capable person is a really powerful thing,” Magel said.“Everybody has a chance to change, and instead of you looking at my criminal background, get to know me. Get to see the kind of work I can provide. Getting from here to there is becoming increasingly more sustainable, in part, by electric cars.“All the cars are getting electrified,” Don Hillebrand, with the Advanced Powertrain Research Facility at Argonne National Labs in Illinois, said. “The minivan and the middle of the road sort of cars and the trucks.”By 2040, more than half of new car sales and a third of all cars on the road across the world are projected to be electric, according to Bloomberg.com.But it raises an important question.“What do you do with these batteries at the end of their life?” Linda Gaines said. Gaines is the chief scientist for Recell Center of Advanced Battery Recycling.“For a long time a lot of us looked at electrification sort of as hype,” Hillebrand explained.Hillebrand works at Argonne National Labs in the energy systems division, focusing on optimizing how energy is used. He sees one big problem in the creation of electric car batteries. “There are not enough fundamental elements that go into batteries for us to make all the batteries we need forever and throw them away when we’re done,” he said.Meaning these elements need to be reused. “The early batteries from 10 years ago are hitting the end of their life,” he said.The global stockpile of these batteries is expected to exceed 3.4 million by 2035, compared to 55,000 in 3018, according to the Institute for Energy Research. Once the battery loses 20 to 30 percent of its capacity, the available driving range gets shorter, so some companies are using them for other purposes.Florida Power and Light is using them for power storage, and Nissan is reusing old Leaf batteries to power Japanese street lights.These companies are repurposing, but researchers think another fix could come in the development stage.“After 10, 15 years, those batteries are going to reach the end of life and we have to do something with them,” Venkat Srinivasan, a battery scientist at Argonne National Labs, said. “We think there are ways in which we can make these batteries last more than 20 years.”And that’s exactly what’s being done inside this facility. The lab he works in is looking into ways to make batteries last longer. But for now, the main focus is on giving them a second life by recycling.“The biggest challenge today in recycling batteries is they’re not economic,” Venkat said.That's where the Recell Battery recycling center and other recycling businesses come into play.“If you can recover the materials in the battery in a usable form,” Linda Gaines explained. “You can actually recover valuable product.” This includes cobalt and other elements. Linda Gaines and Jeff Spangenberger are part of this center. Their goal is to come up with a recycling process that’s profitable.“Some things take more energy and resources to recycle then it did to make them in the first place,” Gaines said. “So, when you’re looking at the whole life cycle of the product, you need to try to figure out what the benefits are and what the costs are to recycle.”To understand size, one pouch cell in an electric car battery is about the size of a tablet. In the generation 1 Chevy Volt there are 288 pouch cells in one battery.Cars have become the biggest user of lithium ion batteries -- even more than consumer electronics, the Institute for Energy Research said.While Recell is looking into ways to make the recycling process more beneficial and profitable, Larry Reaugh with American Manganese, Inc. is doing something similar. “That’s where we come in, we want the battery packs,” Reaugh said. With their process, they are able to recover the elements inside the battery, comparing their operation to a small operating mine.“There’s a lot of money in it, because it’s very valuable material,” he said.As more batteries retire, companies like this will become more important.“There’s a trickle of batteries that are being recycled right now, but there’s gonna be an avalanche of batteries coming in the next 5 to 10 years as cars hit the end of their life,” Hillebrand said. 4027
Former NBA player Mike Bibby is facing sexual abuse allegations from a teacher at the Arizona school where Bibby coaches the boy's basketball team.Phoenix police said Monday that they were recently made aware of allegations involving staff at Shadow Mountain High School."As of now, the investigation is ongoing and no suspect has been named, nor any charges recommended," Phoenix police said. The alleged victim filed a restraining order against Bibby on February 22, 2019, in reference to an incident that happened on February 22, 2017.In the paperwork, the teacher says she was outside with several coworkers when Bibby pointed at her from his car and asked her to come talk. When she approached the car, Bibby allegedly got out and picked her up, forcing her into the vehicle on her back. The woman says Bibby smelled of alcohol as he touched her inappropriately and said sexually explicit things to her.The alleged victim says she managed to get out of the car, but Bibby followed her toward the school, and once again grabbed her and touched her inappropriately. The woman reported that she told Bibby to stop several times before she was able to get away and go into a private room.The victim says days after the incident, Bibby asked her to tell the athletic director of the school that everything was ok between the two of them. She says she did tell the AD that in 2017, before filing the restraining order this week.Bibby has been ruled ineligible as a volunteer coach while police and the district investigate, according to a district spokesperson.Paradise Valley Unified School District released a statement, saying: At PVSchools, our first priority is always the safety and well-being of our staff and students. We take all allegations of misconduct very seriously and work in cooperation with law enforcement on all police matters. At the request of the Phoenix Police Department, the District’s internal investigation was suspended pending the conclusion of the Police Department’s active investigation into the accusations. PVSchools conducts thorough background investigations for all employees and volunteers, including a notarized criminal affidavit, background check, and fingerprint clearance. PVSchools will continue to fully cooperate with the Phoenix Police Department on the investigation and will provide the police with any support requested.
