SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Images of burning homes, helicopters and flames are now a regular occurrence in California.This summer, that wildfire threat became real for the Del Cerro community.“We could hear the exploding palm trees, we could smell the toxic, frightening smoke," remembers Glenn Thomas, Vice Chair of Friends of Del Cerro.The group wanted to do something to pay back firefighters for all they do for the community. They wanted to know what the department needs to help firefighters do their job better. “We believe you find out what people want and you give it to them!” said Thomas.Friends of Del Cerro teamed up with the San Diego Fire Rescue Foundation to make something happen.What the department needs, Thomas learned, is more wildland firefighting hand tools. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – It's exploding in the wellness industry, but is CBD safe? 10News visited a San Diego lab that tested CBD products for ingredients like pesticides and heavy metals. The results were surprising to lab personnel. Shelby Huffaker is the lead cannabis educator at Torrey Holistics in Sorrento Valley. The licensed dispensary recently conducted its own CBD study to show customers just how unreliable the open market can be. "We collected about a dozen different products from various locations around San Diego and also on the internet," she tells 10News. Torrey Holistics collected samples from places like farmers' markets, grocery stores, and the internet. The company bought CBD products such as lip balms, caramels, creams, and bath bombs, then sent to San Diego's Infinite Chemical Analysis Labs. "It's pretty busy right now with it being harvest time," says David Marelius, Ph.D. He's the co-founder of Infinite Chemical Analysis Labs, which tests cannabis and related products. "People are definitely trying to take advantage of the CBD boom right now," he adds. Both CBD and THC come from the cannabis plant, but CBD does not have the psychoactive properties that give you the feeling of being high. CBD received praised for claims of health benefits like reducing anxiety and inflammation. According to Infinite Chemical Analysis Labs, none of the CBD samples purchased on the internet by Torrey Holistics had any CBD in them. Dr. Marelius tells 10News that the majority of the overall samples didn't meet their packaging claims. He adds that the products' potencies were off, and one product had almost 70% less CBD in it than what it advertised. Three of the products reportedly failed for pesticides, although the levels were so low that they likely weren't harmful. "It's kind of the wild west out there," says Sally Greenberg with the National Consumers League. Greenberg tells 10News that CBD sellers often exaggerate the benefits of CBD without having the science to back up the claims. "[They say] that they cure cancer or treat Alzheimer's or treat AIDS," she adds. The National Consumers League is advocating for federal oversight from the Food and Drug Administration, which currently doesn't regulate most CBD. In California, the Bureau of Cannabis Control tests CBD that's sold in licensed dispensaries, like Torrey Holistics. "You're going to want to look for a Batch number or UID number. That ensures that we're able to match the testing results with that specific product," says Huffaker. The dispensary is hoping that the lab results will highlight the importance of researching your CBD before buying. "Everything carried in a licensed cannabis store is going to have to be verified [and] vetted by the dispensary [to be sure] it has gone through the necessary testing," adds Huffaker. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Kaiser Permamente employees in San Diego voted to join a nationwide strike against the healthcare giant starting Oct. 14. More than 4,000 members of OPEIU Local 30 supported the action, a union spokesperson said. Workers say they want to “protect middle-class jobs with wages and benefits that can support families.” Hundreds of positions would be affected, including x-ray, pharmacy, and surgical technicians, phlebotomists, optometrists, and housekeepers. “We believe the only way to ensure our patients get the best care is to take this step,” said Robert Sparrow, an x-ray technician. “Our goal is to get Kaiser to stop committing unfair labor practices and get back on track as the best place to work and get care. There is no reason for Kaiser to let a strike happen when it has the resources to invest in patients, communities and workers.” Picket lines will be established at Kaiser Permanente hospitals, medical office buildings, and other facilities in six states and Washington, D.C. Kaiser Permanente Chairman and CEO Bernard J. Tyson issued a statement which reads: “While the Kaiser Permanente management team was actively engaged in negotiations at the bargaining table, SEIU-UHW released a strike announcement on 9/16 – an overt effort to gain leverage in bargaining. “This has been an ongoing pattern during this entire process with SEIU-UHW, as they believe that an aggressive approach such as using negative corporate campaigning and threats of strike is the way to get a better offer than what our other unions have received. “We are in this situation because of the aggressive approach of SEIU-UHW leadership, but our approach remains the same: we are committed to offering a package that’s aligned with all of our other unions that keeps our employees among the best paid in wages and benefits in the industry. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It's not often you hear about a bird being rescued from a tree. That's a task San Diego Fire-Rescue was up to in Mission Bay Thursday. Around 12:30 p.m. County Animal Services called for special service when they found an owl entangled in a tree. In a Facebook post SDFR wrote that the owl was caught in fishing line, leaving it suspended from the branches of the tree near 1775 E. Mission Bay Drive. The Engine 20 crew used a ladder to get to the bird and help set it free.  533
