In an age of podcasts and audio books, you might think this tiny nonprofit radio station would never make it. But not only is this New Orleans institution still on the air, it's thriving. It’s all thanks to donations, an army of volunteers and listeners that depend on the very unique services they provide.This rare radio station—located inside an old Victorian home—plays just about anything, except music. That’s not the only thing that makes WRBH Radio unique; the station uses their resources to help the blind. "The mission is to provide current information for the visually impaired," says Natalia Gonzalez with WRBH Radio for the Blind. Every day, a stream of volunteers at the station bring listeners just about anything that comes in print, including news headlines, grocery ads and even horoscopes. Gonzalez says the station provides local news, as well as national news. That also includes the funnies from national newspapers. Gonzalez says one of the best things about working at WRBH Radio for the Blind is meeting all the people who volunteer, like Mike McNulty, who is a volunteer reader. “My grandfather on my father’s side lost his vision, and it literally took a huge part of his life,” says McNulty. “So yeah, it kind of spoke to me, you know?” The station and its volunteers are making impacts on people’s lives—people like Tim Lindsley, who lost his vision later in life. Lindsley, a loyal listener in Thibodaux, Louisiana, says not only does WRBH bring him the news he can no longer read, it also brings a companion, of sorts, into his home. “Yeah, well, you’re definitely not isolated,” he explains. “You feel a lot more part of the world; part of what’s going on.” For Gonzalez, that’s exactly what she hopes her radio station can bring to viewers. “That it's a voice in a room that's comforting,” she says. “Not only is it providing information, but it’s also assuaging the loneliness that people who are shut in or visually impaired or people who just rely on others to take them places, you know?”There’s something magical about this place, according to Gonzalez. 2110

Deborah Torres has made a career out of helping others. This registered nurse works at a hospital in Southern California. When the coronavirus hit her community, Torres decided to move into a hotel to keep her family safe. Now, others are fighting for people like Torres working on the frontlines, trying to get them paid more.“Something to recognize them as a solider going into battle, said Rulon Stacey, a former hospital CEO turned Program Director for Graduate Programs in Health Administration at the University of Colorado Denver. Stacey says he wants hazard pay for all health care workers. “I know these people and I know that they would take a bullet for you or me or anybody,” he said. “It’s who they are.” Stacey doesn’t have an exact amount in mind, but he does believe the money would have to come from the federal government. “My argument is that it comes in the next phase of the CARES Act which is the fourth traunch that they’re debating right now,” he said, According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, registered nurses make a mean annual wage of about ,000. Across the country, other industries like some grocery store chains and fast food restaurants have already increased workers’ hourly rates. Now, Stacey says those health care workers that stepped in during the COVID-19 crisis deserve more recognition and extra money. “It’s the right thing to do and it will ensure our future when things like this happen,” he said. Torres, however, has a slightly different view. “If I don’t get the hazard pay and I have a patient with COVID, I’m still going to care for that patient no matter what,” she said. Torres says she signed up to care for sick people. And while extra money would be nice, what she really wants is better protection for her industry.“The hazard pay is just like a cherry on top and it would be very nice to have,” she said. “But my priority is to make sure I have my equipment.” 1937

A group surrounded and attacked an NYPD officer in Lower Manhattan, police said Thursday. Pictures released from the May 28 attack at Albany Street and West Avenue show two men accused in the attack. One man pushed the 37-year-old officer to the ground and punched him in the face. The second man repeatedly struck the officer with his skateboard. Police said the officer was treated for a bloody nose along with bruising and pain to the head and shoulder. Exterminators are finding COVID control’s a growing new business.Businesses are getting more aggressive about keeping space for workers and customers sanitized and safe.Truly Nolen Pest Control realized it already had an effective COVID killer it had been using to clean up after rat infestations.Mark Ringlestetter with Truly Nolen says, “So at that point, we decided to build a program that would be good for sanitizing surfaces.”So Truly Nolen worked out procedures for a program called Truly Sanitized, developed training and pushed out a new product. Other pest control companies have gone into COVID control too.Right now Ringlestetter says Truly’s charging about two hundred dollars an hour.Ringlestetter says, “Let's take a call center for instance, and you go in and it's ready to go and then you know there's somebody there and you're doing desktops and wiping down keyboards and, you know, creating hard surfaces on chairs then it could go relatively quickly we're moving around a lot of things and we're doing a lot of prep work in advance that, then, that certainly would slow it down.”The product does not have a long term germ killing effect but Truly Nolen’s working on a process that will because even if COVID-19 doesn’t last our extra interest in sanitizing probably will.“I would imagine that it's changed everyone's perception of how, how to protect yourself even against things like the common, the common cold or even the flu.
