(KGTV) - The U.S. Navy said it has confirmed the death of the pilot in the crash of a fighter jet in the California desert. The single-seat F/A-18E Super Hornet crashed Wednesday morning in a canyon in Death Valley National Park where military aircraft conduct low-level training in an area known as Star Wars Canyon. Seven French tourists on the ground were treated for minor cuts and burns they suffered when they were hit by shrapnel. The Navy says the cause of the crash remains under investigation. The aircraft belonged to Strike Fighter Squadron VFA-151 based at Naval Air Station Lemoore in California's Central Valley. The Navy said in a statement Thursday that the pilot's identity will be withheld until 24 hours after notification of next of kin in accordance with Defense Department policy. 811

Newsom and the state’s Department of Public Health said guidelines for reopening theme parks, concerts, sporting events, and other mass gatherings could be issued this week.Some expect an announcement to be made as soon as Friday.Earlier this week, Disney announced 28,000 employees would be laid off at Disneyland and Disney World parks. Company officials placed part of the blame on Newsom for failing to issue reopening guidelines for theme parks sooner.When asked if he was giving in to pressure from Disney and other theme parks to reopen prematurely, Newsom said, “We are not putting the health and safety of people visiting the state or recreating the state at the parks at risk.”Michelle Steel, chairwoman of the Orange County Board of Supervisors, criticized the state for “dragging its feet” on issuing reopening guidelines for theme parks, specifically Disneyland in Anaheim and Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park.“We need these parks to reopen not for our children and tourists but our businesses and communities that rely on them,” Steel said. “I am disappointed at the lack of progress California has made in this and every other area while other governments have made safe reopenings of their theme parks. A 61-year-old man suffered puncture wounds in a shark attack Wednesday on Cape Cod in Massachusetts, according to officials and reports.The swimmer suffered bites to his leg and torso and was hospitalized, CNN affiliate WCVB reported. His condition was not immediately known.The incident occurred in Truro within the boundary of Cape Cod National Seashore, the National Park Service said.The man was standing about 30 yards offshore when he was bitten.WCVB reported there have been shark sightings in the area, with seals being attacked.Two children were attacked last month off Long Island, New York, and investigators were looking into whether sharks were responsible. 693
