PYONGYANG, May 9 (Xinhua) -- The Rodong Sinmun, a leading newspaper of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), hailed the recent successful visit to China by top leader Kim Jong Il in an editorial published Sunday.The editorial said that the people of the DPRK are "very glad and excited" about the visit. It is a "meaningful opportunity" to strengthen the friendship between the two parties and the leaders of the two countries.The article also indicated that the DPRK will make efforts to further strengthen the traditional DPRK-China friendship.Both countries shared the view that peace, stability and prosperity of the Korean Peninsula are in the common interests of the two countries and other Northeastern Asian nations, the editorial said.The two sides will make joint efforts to achieve the objective of denuclearizing the Peninsula on the basis of the Sept. 19 Joint Statement, it added.The editorial also said that the people of the DPRK sincerely wish the Chinese people still greater achievements in their socialist construction and the cause for national reunification.Kim Jong Il made an unofficial visit to China from May 3 to 7. BEIJING, June 6 (Xinhua) -- China's work safety conditions remained grim as the number of work safety accidents remained large, illegal production still posed challenges and safety management was still loose, a senior official said on Sunday.Yang Yuanyuan, deputy chief of the State Administration of Work Safety, made the remarks at a forum on work safety in Beijing.In the first five months this year, 499 people were dead or missing in 36 major workplace accidents such as coal mine flood and gas explosion, a rise of nearly 40 percent from the same period a year ago, Yang said.Notably, five severe accidents, each with a death toll of more than 30, had happened so far this year, killing 181 lives, up nearly 70 percent year on year, he said.Yang noted the grave picture reflected poor enforcement of safety rules, and enterprises' mere pursuit of output in sacrifice of work safety.He said the government would make continuous efforts to bring those accidents under control.

BEIJING, April 22 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government announced a string of emergency measures Wednesday to provide convenient financial services for people in the quake-hit Qinghai Province and to support reconstruction.The People's Bank of China, the central bank, would lower the deposit reserve ratio for financial institutions in the quake area by 1 percentage point from Wednesday to help increase lending, said a statement posted on the website of the central bank.It would also reduce its rediscount rate for local Rural Credit Cooperatives by 1 percentage point to ease their financial burden.The rediscount rate is the interest rate charged to banks and deposit institutions when they borrow money from the central bank.The return of loans extended before the earthquake was not imperative until June 30, 2011. Residents and companies would be exempted from bad credit records if they could return their loans before the deadline, the central bank said.The statement urged local banks to resume business as soon as possible to meet rising demand for financial services.They should set up temporary outlets in tents, extend office hours and take measures to ensure adequate cash supplies so that residents could deposit and withdraw money conveniently.The measures were jointly introduced by the People's Bank of China, the China Banking Regulatory Commission, the China Insurance Regulatory Commission and the China Securities Regulatory Commission.The 7.1-magnitude quake struck the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu on April 14, leaving 2,183 people dead, 84 missing, and 12,135 injured as of Wednesday.
