SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Hillcrest Business Association is making some changes to the Pride kickoff party this year they hope will make the event more inclusive. According to Benjamin Nicholls, the association’s Executive Director, entry to the event won’t be limited to those 21 and up this year. “We just felt it was a little odd to say ‘oh under 21 you can’t come,’ so we took down the fences and made it all ages,” Benjamin said. On top of taking down the fence that normally surrounds the event, entry will also be donation based. “What we want to do is we want to take down the barriers to entry and that means physically taking down the fences and also charging nothing for folks to get in,” Nicholls added. Nicholls says he hopes the changes will get more people involved. Pride this year will be held on July 12, 13 and 14. 840
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The California Federation of Teachers (CFT) is urging school districts across the state to roll back in-person classes and return to distance learning.CFT President Jeff Freitas said with most of the state back in the purple tier of restrictions, it only makes sense to go back to virtual learning until there is a slow in the spread of COVID-19.“We need to get these numbers down," said Freitas. “We think the best thing right now is for schools to stop their plans of reopening and, or if they are reopened, to close their schools and go back to remote.”Three Vista Unified School District schools -- Rancho Buena Vista High, Vista Magnet Middle, and Madison Middle -- returned to virtual learning Tuesday after positive COVID-19 cases were reported. It’s a back-and-forth the district has been dealing with since reopening for in-person instruction last month.“There should be more of a statewide approach and definitely a national approach,” said Freitas. “We have been asking that they take the lead on this.”San Diego Unified School District thinks it has come up with an answer. During its State of the District address Tuesday evening, Superintendent Cindy Marten said the district created a federal relief plan to get all schools nationwide back on track for the next two years.The plan asks for federal investment in education that would be centered around equity and undoing learning loss.“What would the San Diego strategy look like at the national level? We have outlined that plan, shared it with the Biden administration,” said Marten.The plan includes a COVID-19 testing, tracking, and tracing strategy for students and staff, and 0 billion in direct relief to schools. Marten said the money would offset the lost state revenue and increased operating costs.“We call for full funding for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and full funding for the Impact Aid program to invest in military families,” added Marten. “We call for tripling Title I funding and making the fund permanent to support low-income families.”“I know that San Diegans will step up and do whatever it takes to make sure no student is left behind,” Mayor-elect Todd Gloria said during a special appearance at the address.SDUSD’s plan has been sent to the Biden transition team for consideration. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The famed Jessop's Clock that has rested in Horton Plaza since the center opened has been removed.Tuesday, the clock was moved into temporary storage, though the location is not being revealed, according to Jim Jessop, former owner of Jessop's Jewelry, a plaza mainstay for 125 years before closing in 2017.Upon announcing the closing of Jessop's Jewelry, the plaza asked Jessop to move the clock.RELATED: Grocery chain suing Horton Plaza over millions in sales lossesIt's likely the clock, constructed in 1907, will remain in temporary storage for a couple of years until its new location's lease is signed, Jessop says.The fact that its current location is being kept secret may be due to security concerns. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The National Weather Service warned of minor coastal flooding ahead of a King Tide set to hit the San Diego County coastline Monday and Tuesday.The event forced the agency to issue a beach hazards statement from Sunday night through Tuesday evening.Surf will begin to build late Sunday, peaking Monday and Tuesday. By Tuesday night, the surf is expected to diminish, the agency said.High tides Monday will be 6.9 feet at 8 a.m. High tide on Tuesday will be 6.8 feet at 8:40 a.m.The agency warned that the King Tides will create water run-up into some beach parking lots and other low-lying areas.Beaches most prone to flooding include Sunset, Seal, Newport, Oceanside, Cardiff, La Jolla Shores and Imperial Beach.Elevated surf will also create strong rip currents and dangerous swimming conditions, the National Weather Service says. 861
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The new community plan for Kearny Mesa, given final approval by the City Council earlier this week, takes effect Friday. Several properties are being rezoned with 27,000 new housing units planned for those parcels.“My vision is that within five years, you’ll be able to live on Convoy, enjoy the restaurants and the shops that are on Convoy, and work in a job in Kearny Mesa, all in one community," City Councilmember Chris Cate, who represents the area, told ABC 10News ahead of the final vote.Cate says the city is trying to encourage a"live-work" village concept for many San Diego neighborhoods, especially those that are major job centers, such as Kearny Mesa. The idea is that by creating housing and recreational possibilities in the same communities where people work, they will have to commute less. That has numerous benefits across the city, including less traffic and car pollution.It is anticipated that many of the new projects will replace aging strip malls whose parking lots remain vacant much of the time. Cate hopes the areas around Convoy St., Clairemont Mesa Blvd., and Aero Dr. will become similar to the feel of Little Italy.Because parameters have already been set for how many homes will go onto each affected parcel, as well as other necessities such as pathways, street improvements, and parks, there will not be the same drawn-out approval process that has been seen with other recent attempts at development. Cate says that means developers who acquire the land will be able to move quickly, as long as their design stays within the parameters of the community plan. “They already have an understanding of what these projects will look like, what’s required of them, where different pathways or parks will go. All these things are already agreed to on the front end," Cate said.Cate says he anticipates that the first projects could break ground in 2021. 1910
