SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local woman says a water meter device in the Midway District has been leaking gallons of water for at least two years, but no one will fix it. She emailed Team 10 investigative reporter Jennifer Kastner after contacting multiple government agencies to report the wasted water. The backflow device sits just off of Sports Arena Boulevard. When 10News visited it last week, it was dripping steady streams of water.“It’s a problem,” says Diane Ang, who works nearby. She says there's so much leaking water, that the surrounding transient population uses the water to fills up their bottles. Containers of shampoo and soap wrappers are scattered around. Ang tells 10News that people bathe in the water. At one point, she says, people grew a garden next to the device because the ground was so saturated with water. “[They had] tomatoes and some other vegetables,” she adds.There's no property tag on the device, so Ang called the City of San Diego at least three times but couldn’t get any help. She filled out multiple requests for assistance on the City’s "Get it Done” website, but there was no resolution. She was told the backflow device might belong to the Navy. She tells us that she made several attempts to get in touch with someone at the Navy. She says she spent at least two or three years trying to get the issue fixed. “No one cares. No one cares,” she adds.10News wanted to know how much water was leaking, so we timed one of the flowing streams using a measuring bucket. What we discovered was that thousands of gallons of water may have been wasted in the last few years. We took our information to Mathnasium of Point Loma. The math tutoring company found that 21,000 gallons would have be lost in one year alone, assuming the water had been leaking at the same rate, continuously. “It’s such a huge waste,” says Ang. 10News contacted the City of San Diego. A spokesperson directed us to the Navy. A weeks ago, we reached out Naval Base Point Loma. This Tuesday, a media spokesperson for Naval Base Point Loma sent us an email which reads, “We appreciate everyone who took the time to bring this leak to our attention. Our Naval Base Point Loma Public Works team is taking action to fix the leak today. Conserving our natural resources is a high priority and is very important to all of us at Naval Base Point Loma. We encourage active participation by contacting us directly at nbpl_pao@navy.mil or use the “Get-It-Done San Diego” app for the City of San Diego. [It] is a quick way for anyone in the community to report service issues (street lights, traffic signals, trash recycling, sidewalks, street flooding, etc.)” 10News verified that the leak has been addressed. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A hands-on workforce training program is helping people with disabilities land jobs.Hands On @ Hyatt provides two weeks of on-the-job training at the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego. Students in the culinary training program get 100 hours of paid training, working with professional chefs.Kyle Lovell was a student in the program and ultimately landed a full-time job at the Hyatt as a cook."We're all here at the end of the day to work, to find a job, to make it on our own," said Lovell, "I hope everyone that has a disability knows they aren't alone."Lovell has a learning disability, but the program works with people ranging from physical disabilities to hearing impairment."I hope employers will see there are people out there with challenges that can work really hard and do a really good job," said Lovell.While unemployment hovers around 4 percent, it's twice as high for people with disabilities.The state-funded program is a partnership of Florida-based company Hands on Educational Services.Anyone interested in applying can learn more here. 1082

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Marine killed in a motorcycle crash on I-15 Friday has been identified as 21-year-old Logan Parkhurst.The crash happened in the southbound lanes of Interstate 15 near Miramar Way just after 6:30 a.m.According to the California Highway Patrol, Parkhurst hit the back of a Toyota while attempting to exit onto Miramar Way, causing him to be ejected. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A man united families across the United States after digging into a military training crash that happened 50 years ago at MCAS El Toro.Johnathan Keene often visited his cousin's grave at Arlington National Cemetery, "I go up to visit him twice a year, typically Memorial Day and Veteran's Day." On January 15, 2019, he was in the neighborhood, stopped by and it was that day that he noticed Maj. Walter Zytkewicz grave next to his cousin's grave.Maj. Zytkewicz was in the Marines, like his cousin, and died the day before his cousin. He said that 'grabbed' him.Up until that day he knew his cousin, Capt. Robert Walls, died in a military crash, but it wasn't spoken of at the dinner table.He knew there must be a connection to the two men, so he started digging. He found four other Marines were on the same training flight July 30th, 1970. "Major Zytkewicz was 2 months away from retiring," Keene said he was studying to become a realtor.Staff Sergeant Kenneth Davis, 1st Lieutenant Mullins and Corporal Kenneth Metzdorf. Keene said Metzdorf wasn't supporsed to be on the flight, "called his best friend and said hey could you go on this flight for me today? So they switched and that cost him [his life]."Keene tracked down the redacted incident report and filled in the gaps with interviews from witnesses and Marines who knew the men on board."Witnesses say they waited too late to pull the plane out of the angle of attack and the plane hit, bounced, flipped upside down, hit again, bounced in the air, the left wing fell off, all four props fell off. The plane landed right in the middle of the air field. Flames and fuel streamed down the runway, they said it was basically a long stream of fuel and fire," he said.Flames Keene was amazed to learn his cousin and Metzdorf walked through, "the report listed 80%-90% coverage of third degree burns. I can't even imagine how he walked out," he said shocked.Mullins was killed on impact, found 50 yards from the plane with a broken leg. Walls, Zytkewicz and Metzdorf died days later from their injuries.Keene said Walls died from burns in his lungs.SSgt. Davis passed in 2013.The exact cause was redacted in the report. Keene believes the Marine Corps wants to preserve the honor of the pilot and protect his family."After the crash, the material that made up Marine Corps and Navy flight suits was changed. They thought it was a flame retardant material, unfortunately it burned and melted to their skin," he said.Keene hopes these difficult discoveries will fuel Marines' admiration. To keep their memories alive, Keene created a plaque with the team's names that will be presented at MCAS Miramar, where the squadron now resides."Every other Marine that goes through that squadron will see that plaque and realize there's five men that in some way or another touched their lives from either a safety stand-point or history and lineology of VMGR-352," Keene said. 2946

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A man was arrested in connection with the shooting death of a woman in a Mountain View apartment, San Diego police announced Thursday.SDPD officials said officers responded to reports of a shooting inside an apartment unit in the 4500 block of Imperial Avenue at around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.Officers arrived and found a woman, later identified as Emily Cortez, with a gunshot wound in her upper torso. She was located on an upstairs walkway of the apartment complex, SDPD officials said.According to police, a man was providing medical aid as officers and emergency medical crews arrived at the scene.Despite life-saving efforts, Cortez, 19, was declared dead at the scene.During their investigation, SDPD Homicide Unit detectives identified the suspected gunman as 18-year-old Jorge Manuel Sanchez and arrested him in connection with Cortez’s death.SDPD officials said Cortez and Sanchez lived in the apartment where the incident occurred, and the suspect and victim were in a relationship.No other information was released.Anyone with information regarding the incident is urged to call the SDPD Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 1188
