DULZURA, Calif. (KGTV) - A Dulzura man is describing his harrowing escape, after he woke up to his apartment on fire.At Barrett Lake Winery Monday morning, flames tore through a converted barn housing the apartment of vineyard foreman Patrick Rowan. Around 5:30 a.m., Rowan woke to a loud noise and opened a door which opens into the barn's interior."So bright, about 20 feet away. Looked like the sun parked in the room next to me," said Rowan.He saw flames everywhere and rushed into a second apartment unit to rescue two barn cats, but they kept running off."When I looked back, the door -- ceiling part -- was falling. Everything was on fire, except to the left, so I ran through there," said Rowan.He ran back his own apartment to get his pets: two Siamese kittens named Tom and Jerry. For minutes, he tried to coax them to come out from under the bed, but they didn't. He then noticed that his only exit, the kitchen area, was on fire."The roof, ceiling, and door are all wood, and all on fire. Started falling, so I had to get out of there. I ran through the fire, but didn't get burned," said Rowan.As he escaped, he didn't feel fear, only guilt."I felt like a piece of **** because I couldn't save my animals. They were my homies. They were the only things that mattered," said Rowan.One kitten died in the fire. The other is missing. Rowan's apartment was a total loss, and he didn't have renters insurance.He'll be homeless for the holidays, but he's still planning on buying gifts for family and friends."I'm not letting it ruin anything. I'm getting people gifts. People are yelling at me about it ... I don’t have anything anyways. The few hundred dollars I want to spend don't matter," said Rowan.Fire investigators told the property owners the fire was suspicious and the investigation is ongoing. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - At age 73, Brian Duncan is following his own advice: if you think you can do it, you probably can.When Duncan got out of the Navy in 1967 he wanted to become a police officer. At the time, however, he says departments wanted big, tall men with 20/20 vision. He didn't fit the mold and moved on to a career in the court system.Twelve years ago, the itch came back, and Duncan joined the El Cajon Police Department's Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol, also known as the RSVP program.Now he's taking his service even further, working to become a reserve police officer.If he lands a job, Duncan will be a sworn police officer able to make arrests and carry firearms. The only difference is he'll always have to work alongside a regular police officer.Duncan says his age is not a barrier and he's doing this to make a difference in the community."I've proven I can get through the academy, so I can do it. If I didn't think I could do it or would jeopardize someone's safety, I wouldn't do it," said Duncan.Reserve officers work voluntarily and are not paid.On Friday Duncan graduates from Grossmont College's 32nd Police Academy and already has an application out for a job.  1210

(KGTV) - The man charged with the brutal beating of an El Cajon Police officer inside a KFC appeared at a preliminary hearing in court Wednesday.Officer Jose Sioson was preparing to question Daniel Cook about stealing sodas from a Dollar Tree store when Cook attacked him at the restaurant on Fletcher Parkway, police said.MTS bus driver Iesha Booker witnessed the attack and grabbed the officer’s own radio to call for help when he was knocked unconscious.“I just grabbed his walkie talkie. I didn't know how to work it, I just grabbed it and just kept screaming in there they have an officer down, they have an officer down,” Booker said.Officer Sioson was taken to the hospital and released after several surgeries. He testified Wednesday about almost losing his eyesight in the attack, and how he is still recovering.RELATED: MTS bus driver's quick thinking saves officer's life"I never meant to be a hero," Booker said. "I was just doing what I thought that anyone would do for us or for me."Cook, who has previous convictions for assault and resisting arrest, is being held on half a million dollars bail. During an interview on Fox News on Tuesday, President Donald Trump called on Attorney General William Barr to open a corruption investigation into Joe Biden's alleged ties to Ukraine based on information contained in emails reportedly taken from a laptop that may or may not have belonged to Biden's son."We've got to get the Attorney General to act. He's got to act and he's got to act fast. He's got to appoint someone," Trump said Tuesday during an interview on Fox & Friends. "This is major corruption, and this has to be known about before the election."Trump was referring to a report first published in the New York Post last week that was based on emails allegedly recovered from a laptop left at a Delaware computer repair shop. The Post claimed the emails were taken from a laptop belonging to Biden's son, Hunter, and showed that the younger Biden was contacted by the adviser to the board of a Ukrainian energy company, Burisma. In the emails, allegedly, the Ukrainian official thanked Hunter Biden for giving him an opportunity to meet his father.Some Republicans have seized on the story, calling it a "smoking gun." They claim that such a meeting would be a conflict of interest, given Joe Biden's political influence and Hunter Biden's position on Burisma's board.However, the Post's story left several questions about the authenticity of the emails unanswered. The owner of the repair shop, where the laptop was recovered, was unable to identify the computer's owner. The shop owner did say a Beau Biden Foundation sticker was attached to the computer. There's also no evidence that Hunter Biden responded to the email from the Ukranian energy advisor. The Biden campaign says the former Vice President's schedule shows no meetings with that advisor. Finally, the Post said it obtained materials and information for the story from Rudy Giuliani, one of Trump's personal lawyers.Citing sources, The New York Times reported Monday that one of the Post journalists who wrote the story asked that his name not be attached to the article "because he had concerns over the article's credibility."Despite Trump's claim that the emails show Joe Biden has an inclination to use his political office for personal enrichment, Trump and his family have an extensive history of dubious business practices. The New York Times reports that Trump has leveraged the office of the presidency to drive business to his resorts and hotels.Trump's call to action to Barr is just his latest call for the neutral agency to delve into cases that would be politically advantageous to the president. Earlier this month, Trump said he was "disappointed" in Barr for his inaction on voter fraud investigations and his inability to recover emails deleted by Hillary Clinton prior to the 2016 election.Weeks ago, 1,600 former Department of Justice lawyers signed an open letter that claimed Barr was abusing the power of his office to help Trump win reelection. 2959

EAST FREEHOLD, N.J. — A 3.1 magnitude earthquake was detected Wednesday morning in the Central New Jersey town of Freehold, according to the United States Geological Survey.The USGS detected the quake around 2 a.m. while the National Weather Service referred to the quake as a "small tremor" despite that it was felt in much of Central Jersey.The depth of the quake was reported as about 3.1 miles. There are no reports yet of any damage or injuries due to the earthquake.Hundreds of reports were coming in from as far as Philadelphia and Long Island, New York on the USGS' "Did You Feel It?" map.Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden said that about 125 non-emergency and 911 calls came in from residents who reported feeling and hearing the quake.Twitter user @BWf34, in Freehold, said it "felt like an explosion, then shaking. No obvious damage to house. Woke up the entire family."Twitter user @arorasa, in East Windsor, said the "whole house shook. It's been an hour now, but still feeling rattled."Geophysicist Robert Sanders from the USGS said that a 3.1 quake is unlikely to have caused anything more than damaged shelves or falling picture frames.He said there had been just two other quakes over 3.0 magnitude in the area since 1970.The last recorded earthquake in New Jersey before Wednesday was a 1.7 magnitude quake on Aug. 17 in Milford, New Jersey, according to the Northeast States Emergency Consortium.The strongest quake with an epicenter in New Jersey was a magnitude 4.8 earthquake back on Aug. 23, 1938, near Trenton.This story was originally published by Stephen M.
