The 20-degree wind chill isn’t stopping Herb Bardavid from walking the streets. He's hoping for his next meaningful interaction. With a camera in his hand, Bardavid is hoping to meet a stranger and tell their stories. But it’s not just any stranger. Bardavid interviews New York’s seniors, people over the age of 70, because he believes they all have something to say and a story to tell. “I look at people walking in the street and I want to photograph them and be able to tell their story,” he says. With their permissions, Bardavid puts their stories, along with the photos he takes, on his blog called "Getting Old and Getting Out in New York City."“The elderly in New York tend to be invisible,” he explains. “People look past them.“And I think it’s important to recognize the elderly and their individuality and their importance and their need to be part of society.” Bardavid himself is 75 years old. Despite the calm voice of the semi-retired therapist, people don't always stop when he approaches. “I would say 60 percent of the people I stop are willing to talk to me,” Bardavid says. Or they'll stop and chat, but they don’t want their photo taken, he says.On this cold day, Bardavid is getting even less interviews. "I think we hit the 40 percent today," he says. But just as his walk was nearing an end, he got one more individual to tell their story. “My feeling is everyone's got a story,” Bardavid says. 1433

The Humane Society of the United States went undercover, investigating animal testing at one of the largest contract research organizations in the world. Officials found dozens of beagles and hounds that were force-fed fungicides to test a new pesticide product at a lab in Michigan.The undercover video is hard to watch. "In some cases, the animals are forced to ingest substances either by putting a gel capsule down their throats or with a tube,” Kathleen Conlee, vice president of Animal Research Issues at the Humane Society of the United States, can be heard saying in the undercover video. For some, it’s hard to fathom. However, Conlee says this kind of animal testing happens more often than we think. "There are about 60,000 dogs at about 350 facilities in the United States right now, and I think the public is very shocked to learn that it's at that scale,” Conlee says. And that's just dogs. Conlee explains when you factor in all animals, the number being used for testing is closer to 25 million per year. "That's warm-blooded animals that doesn't include fish, reptiles, amphibians," she explains. In this case out of Michigan, 36 beagles were being used to test pesticides for a company called Dow Chemical Company. It’s a practice that is not against the law. "The company is doing legal activities,” Conlee says. “Nothing illegal was happening." Often times, Conlee says federal agencies like the FDA and EPA request animal tests to approve products or provide funding for experiments. Most recently, the U.S.D.A. was under fire by a separate animal watchdog group for alleged "kitten cannibalism,” where they report experiments involving feeding kittens to dogs. These are practices Conlee says should stop."We're going to be calling on these agencies to change their practices,” she says. 1826

The consumer credit website Upgraded Points used TSA data to find the airports with the fastest and slowest security lines. Analyzing data from the 25 busiest airports in the U.S. during the travel periods of 4 a.m. through 11 p.m., Upgraded Points found that Newark International Airport, serving the New York City region, had the longest wait times. According to the data, Newark International had an average wait time of 23.1 minutes. The data also found that if you plan on flying out of Newark during the lunch hour on Mondays, expect to wait an hour. The best time to fly out of Newark is late on Fridays, with the shortest wait time being around 15 minutes.Of the 25 busiest airports, the airport with the shortest wait times was Salt Lake City International. The airport has a wait time of 9.1 minutes. The worst average wait out of Salt Lake City is 26 minutes, and the best is around 2 minutes. The House of Representatives will vote Wednesday on significant gun control legislation for the first time in more than two decades, a move that Democrats hope will increase a pressure campaign for a vote in the Senate.The universal background check bill, H.R. 8, will come to the floor for a vote and is expected to pass with the Democratic majority. The legislation would require background checks on all firearm sales in the country. Currently, only licensed gun dealers have to perform background checks for anyone seeking to purchase a firearm. Most unlicensed sellers do not; H.R. 8 would make that illegal. There are exemptions to the law like "gifts to family members and transfers for hunting, target shooting, and self-defense," according to the House Judiciary Committee website.The bill, sponsored by a bipartisan duo of Reps. Mike Thompson, a California Democrat, and Peter King, a New York Republican, remains an outlier right now in the House since it has bipartisan support. Most of the legislation related to gun control has been sponsored by Democrats.Four other Republicans co-sponsored the bill: Brian Mast of Florida, Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, Chris Smith of New Jersey and Fred Upton of Michigan. King told CNN on Tuesday that he may get a few more Republican colleagues to vote for the measure, but "no more than a handful."At a 25-year anniversary party for the gun control group the Brady Campaign on Tuesday evening, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi expressed confidence that the universal background checks bill would pass the House of Representatives. At the event, Pelosi also recalled her her efforts with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer in the 1990s on gun control as "hard," but a "triumph that saved millions of lives.""Tomorrow we're going to send him the background check legislation," Pelosi said to her Senate colleague with a wide smile.Schumer predicted that the country is on the "precipice of great change" on the issue of gun safety."We have a Democratic House that will not flinch. We have a Senate Democratic minority that will not flinch. Most of all, we have a public who is aroused and strong."Democrats, including Pelosi, have made this a top policy priority in the new Congress, staging public hearings on the topic which had not been held for years in Congress.
