Researchers from the British Psychological Society released a report last week challenging stereotypes on why people are obese. The report states that "obesity is not simply down to an individual’s lack of willpower." The report claims there are a number of circumstances, some of which beyond a person's control, for becoming obese. "The people who are most likely to be an unhealthy weight are those who have a high genetic risk of developing obesity and whose lives are also shaped by work, school and social environments that promote overeating and inactivity," the BPS report says. "People who live in deprived areas often experience high levels of stress, including major life challenges and trauma, often their neighborhoods offer few opportunities and incentives for physical activity and options for accessing affordable healthy food are limited.""Research evidence points strongly to genes being a major part of the explanation for why some people are more susceptible to becoming obese than others," the BPS report continues.The report comes as 40 percent of American adults are considered obese, according to CDC figures.Fat shaming does not workThree weeks ago, late night comedian Bill Maher gave a controversial dialog on obesity, which he admitted was "fat shaming." "Fat shaming doesn’t need to end it needs to make a comeback," he said. Maher added, "Being fat isn’t a birth defect. Nobody comes out of the womb needing to buy two seats on the airplane. In fact, weight stigma perpetuates a cycle of shame and weight gain at all levels of obesity. Severe weather plagued several states throughout the Midwest over the weekend, killing one person and damaging at least one building.Vickie Darnel, 64, died from drowning Sunday after she drove into a flooded creek crossing in Le Flore County, Oklahoma, according to Lt. Kera Philippi, spokeswoman for the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.Philippi says that Darnel's vehicle was swept off the roadway around 4:30 a.m. Sunday near the border of Arkansas.The area saw a number of flash flood and severe thunderstorm warnings from the National Weather Service over the weekend.The National Weather Service is sending an assessment team to South Bend, Indiana, after a tornado touched down in the area and destroyed at least one building.The building was the site of Growing Kids daycare facility, according to Aaron Miller, dispatch supervisor for St. Joseph County Public Safety Communication Center.Miller told CNN that the building suffered extensive damage and there were several reports of trees down throughout St. Joseph County.Missouri State Highway Patrol along with the Missouri Department of Conservation and several local agencies performed multiple water rescues Sunday for people whose vehicles were in the water.They also rescued people who were stranded by high water due to heavy rainfall, according to the Missouri Department of Public Safety.A subdivision in Neosho, Missouri, and parts of Roaring River State Park had to be evacuated, although it was unclear how many people had to leave, the Missouri Department of Public Safety said.The band of weather that caused all of this chaos is called a frontal boundary and it acts as a cold front but doesn't actually have any cold air behind it.The mixture of the boundary layer is slightly cooler dry air and hot humid air which can cause intense storms. 1821

Scientists have long warned of the effects of global warming and the possibility of more intense wildfires that burn for longer periods of time. Now, a new team of researchers is hoping to get a better understanding of how the smoke travels and what the tiniest particles could be doing to our lungs. "There's many things we’re still struggling to understand about smoke,” explains Joshua Schwarz, a physicist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The group of researchers includes meteorologists and weather modelers, in addition to scientists. “All together, we are deciding which fires to target," Schwarz says. Amber Soja, with NASA, describes herself as the “fire person” of the group. Every day for the next couple of weeks, this group will create a flight plan, opening the door for another group of scientists inside this flying laboratory. “We've got tremendous range, and we're carrying a tremendous payload of information,” Soja says.This lab was once an Italian passenger airliner. It flies straight into the smoke of fires. "We'll have to look at what's the altitude of the smoke we want to be in, which direction is the smoke going, how far can we track that smoke," Schwarz says.Intake tubes on the outside of the lab bring in smoke particles that will be studied. Researchers are interested in learning how the smoke travels and what it does to our bodies when it’s inhaled. Pete Lahm, with the U.S. Forest Service, says studying the smoke is important because it impacts both public health and safety. “This info will help us make in the long run [make] better decisions on when we ignite fire and how we consider smoke impacts, and that's absolutely critical to our mission,” Lahm says.
