SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A hearing that will decide where to place the so-called “bolder than most” rapist is set to take place in October.According to documents sent to 10News, the Department of State Hospitals proposed that Alvin Quarles live at 43050 Desert Ranch Road in Jacumba Hot Springs.Quarles was convicted and sentenced to 50 years in prison in 1989 after being convicted of attacking and raping four women.RELATED: Alvin Quarles, 'Bolder than Most' rapist, to be released from prisonIn 2013, Quarles became eligible for parole but was instead transferred to a state hospital because one of his victims objected.He earned his nickname because he made his victim’s male partners watch or participate in the sex crimes.“I don’t believe he’s suitable for release at this time,” Dr. Cecilia Groman, who created a report on Quarles’ rehabilitation, testified at a release hearing.RELATED: 'Bolder than most' rapist up for conditional releaseBefore the placement is finalized, the public is able to comment on the proposed location through September 5. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A resident inside an Encanto home opened fire on an intruder Wednesday, San Diego Police said.The victim first vandalized a car in the 6800 block of Charlene Ave. in the Broadway Heights section of Encanto, according to police.Police believe the victim then used a rock to break into a home where people were inside. One person was armed and fired a shot at the intruder.The victim was taken to the hospital. He may be related to the people in the home, and may have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs, police said.Officers did not release the victim’s identity or condition. 612

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A non-profit and business owner came together to donate thousands of dollars to families in need during the pandemic Wednesday.Non-profit Black San Diego started up in September with the goal of bolstering Black-owned businesses and giving them tools to succeed.They have a Facebook page with 36,000 members.On December 19th, Porschia Wyatt posted asking for prayers for her family."Recently my husband was laid off from his job, he works for the Cheesecake Factory, so time’s been hard for me and my family," she said.She and her husband have a 15-year-old daughter, 7 and 8-year-old sons and a 20-month old daughter.Getting Christmas presents was going to be hard, and November 16th made it even more difficult."I had just ate pizza and next thing you know I started throwing up and I couldn’t breath or anything so I was rushed to the hospital," she said she had an abdominal blockage.She underwent three surgeries and came home on the 25th. Now she had huge medical bills to worry about, which was what pushed her to type a message to the BSD community.She got an overwhelming response, more than a hundred comments and a surprise at her doorstep Wednesday morning.Jaime Harris, owner of Big Block Realty, was holding a giant check for ,000."There are so many families that are affected you know? SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A march involving attorneys and staff from the Federal Defenders of San Diego, Inc. is set to take place in downtown San Diego Monday afternoon.The Black Lives Matter To Public Defenders march will begin outside of the Federal Defenders of San Diego Inc. office on Broadway at 12:15 p.m. Participants will walk to the courtyard of the federal courthouse, across the street from the San Diego Hall of Justice on 330 Broadway.Once at the courtyard, longtime San Diego County public defender Geneviéve Jones-Wright will deliver remarks and “address the role public defenders play in our criminal justice system and the statewide call from California public defenders to end police violence,” according to a news release.The San Diego march is one of several involving public defenders and attorneys happening Monday across California.Other counties having their own Black Lives Matter To Public Defenders marches include Los Angeles County, Orange County, Santa Clara County, Contra Costa County, San Francisco County, and Alameda County. 1063

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new cancer screening method is promising to eliminate the need for painful biopsies and greatly reduce the cost of the procedure.It's part of a line of research known as liquid biopsy and the latest advancement is being ramped up for mass production by an entrepreneurial couple in Torrey Pines at the research firm, BioFluidica.  Among billions of blood cells, the company has developed a chip capable of finding a single abnormal cell afflicted with cancer or other diseases."It is probably the most sophisticated injection molding piece in this world," said molecular biologist Rolf Muller, as he holds up a thin, plastic chip about two inches square.First developed by researchers in North Carolina, the chip is injected with a small blood sample which can contain billions of individual cells. The blood passes through 150 tiny tunnels within the chip which are coated with antibodies. Those antibodies do their natural work of isolating the abnormal cells.Researchers can then identify them for any possible threat and treatment.The Mullers say the screenings have the potential to dramatically increase survival rates for cancer patients. And to eliminate the need for the often painful biopsies currently in use.They also envision the test becoming a normal part of standard blood screenings. The chip is currently in clinical trials.
