SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego craft brewery hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic is taking the rare step of opening a restaurant, despite the region going into the state's most restrictive purple tier.Dennis O’Connor says the pandemic hurt Thorne Brewing Company the moment the first shut down kicked in back in March.“It wasn't so much that nobody was coming in, but you also lost all those bars and restaurants that were buying your product,” said O’Connor, who co-founded the brewery in 2012.Not to mention, the price of cans increased, hitting the craft brewer’s distribution.Thorne operates three locations in San Diego County, at least one of which will likely have to shut down as the region enters the most restrictive purple tier, outlawing indoor dining. The restrictions take effect midnight Saturday, to help stop the increased spread of the coronavirus. “We are nowhere near thriving,” O’Connor said. “It’s survival at best.”But O’Connor has a new tool for survival.Connected to Thorne’s Barrio Logan location is a new full service distillery and wood-fired pizza restaurant the brewery finished in march, but never opened. O’Connor says it was a multimillion-dollar project that took years.“It was pretty much just a big blank warehouse,” he said.While the interior can't open, Thorne is converting the restaurant’s outdoor patio into its own barbecue eatery, with a bar in the back called Sideyard Barbecue by Hot Mess (the name of the adjacent pizza restaurant) . It'll seat 84 people and opens to the public Nov. 19.“If outdoor is the new norm then let's do an outdoor and let’s kick (butt) on it,” O’Connor said. “Let's not put it in the street, let’s not put it in a barn tent, let's do something special. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local brewery's decision to use compostable can holders is the latest example of San Diego companies deciding to go green.Pure Project Brewery made the change last month, giving its customers an easier way to take home 4-packs of beer while still being environmentally friendly."You have to make that decision; do I wanna do the right thing, or do I wanna do the cheap thing," says Pure Project Co-Founder Mat Robar. He says every decision his company makes takes the environmental impact into account."It costs us a good amount of money to brew beer with organic and local ingredients, and sometimes it takes a little longer. Ultimately it's the right thing to do," says Robar.The new can holders are made of recycled grain, leftover from the brewing process. They biodegrade in 200 days. And, if they wind up in the ocean by accident, they're safe for animals to eat.Pure is one of the hundreds of San Diego companies emphasizing the planet over profits.Right now, the San Diego Green Business Network lists more than 200 local companies as members.Experts say it can help build a brand, attract a loyal customer base, and also help make money in the long run."The efficiencies of going green has significant business implications," says Heather Honea, the Chair of the Marketing Department at SDSU's Fowler College of Business."If you're trying to build a brand that's meaningful for consumers, you have to speak to the things they care about. Your brand has to be associated with the things they care about," says Honea.In California, that includes environmental impact."If I'm deciding between product a and product b, I'm choosing the product that not only delivers a certain set of quality attributes but also is going to have the impact on my local community or local environment that I think is acceptable," she says.Honea also says that investments in green technology and business practices may cost a lot of money upfront, but they tend to pay themselves off in the long run. She says that's especially true for companies that stay one step ahead of local and state laws.At Pure, they say protecting the environment is their "North Star," a guiding principle for everything they do."It takes a little bit of effort," says Cheyna Swartz, the Tap Room Manager, "But it's definitely worth it." 2331

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Rancho Bernardo family's home has become a must-see experience for their neighbors. Inspired by Disneyland's Haunted Mansion, the Loveless family has created a walk-through Halloween event that has grown bigger and bigger each year. She has recreated many of the iconic characters from the popular ride, as well as adding other spooks and haunts.For creator Katherine Loveless, it brings her back to her childhood. "I grew up on a city street that had a lot of haunted houses like this, so I grew up with it," Loveless said.Loveless and her husband, Bernard, began work on this year's Loveless Manor in August. They have created panels, which serve as moveable walls to create a maze-like path that runs through their yard. The family put a lot of thought into how to adjust their plans for the pandemic.“Last year we did kind of a smaller, tight trail that went in and out the same gateway," Bernard said. "We knew that wasn’t an option and we needed to have the whole trail outside and have more space between groups.”Loveless Manor is only open Halloween night. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A measure on the ballot aims to solve San Diego's homeless and housing crisis by raising property taxes and using the money to build more homes.Measure A would provide the City with 0 million "for the acquisition or improvement of real property" that would be specifically for "vulnerable populations."According to the Measure, that includes low-income families making less than 80% of the median income and the homeless or chronically homeless, seniors, veterans, people who are disabled, and young adults who are coming out of the foster system."It would build as many as 7,500 homes," says Stephen Russell, the President, and CEO of the San Diego Housing Federation. "The trauma of sleeping on the street is ongoing. We believe the first thing you need to do is give someone a safe, secure place to live."Russell says the City could leverage that 0 million to bring in an additional billion in state and federal matching funds.According to the text of Measure A, the money would be paid back over 40 years by gradually raising property taxes. In the first year, homeowners would be taxed an additional .14 per 0,000 of value on their home. With the average home value in San Diego at just above 0,000, that means homeowners would pay an extra in property taxes.But, by the seventh year of the bond, that tax goes up to .85 per 0,000 of assessed value or about 5 for the average home.Over 40 years that means an average homeowner in San Diego would pay an additional ,000 in property taxes."We believe that folks with their empathy, with their sympathy for folks on the streets, are prepared to make that small investment," says Russell.But opponents of the Measure say it's not the right time to raise taxes, and the money would not solve the issue."The people who put Measure A on the ballot are the same people who are responsible for the failed strategies that we've been pursuing for the past decade, that have resulted in a skyrocketing increase in the number of homeless people here in San Diego," says Carl DeMaio, the Chairman of Reform California."If we really want to deal with homelessness, we have to get to the root cause of homelessness, which is substance abuse and mental illness," he says.DeMaio also points out that the text of Measure A says it will cost the City .1 billion to pay back the bonds over 40 years.The Measure also establishes a Citizens Oversight Committee to make sure the money is only spent on affordable housing.Because it's a new tax, it requires a 2/3 vote to pass. 2568
