BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- China's consumer price index (CPI), one of the main gauges of inflation, will peak in August before starting to fall in the following months of the year, an economist said Sunday."The CPI is likely to surpass 3.3 percent in August but that will be the highest level for the year," said Lian Ping, chief economist at Shanghai-based Bank of Communications.He said commodity prices will remain relatively low in the short term as market concern about a weak economic recovery linger and as the European debt crisis spreads.Chinese inflation will also ease due to China's slower economic growth rates and a fall in the price of industrial goods, Lian added.However, long-term inflationary pressures cannot be ruled out, due to potential rises in the cost of food, labor and natural resources, he said.Lian said he expects inflationary pressures to grow in March and April next year.Largely on the back of rising food prices after widespread flooding wrecked crops and disrupted shipping, China's July CPI rose 3.3 percent from a year earlier, the fastest rate since October 2008.The CPI for the first seven months of the year stood at 2.7 percent, below the whole-year target of 3 percent.

BEIJING, Aug.1 (Xinhua) -- The People's Bank of China, China's central bank, has asked its branches to effectively implement a moderately loose monetary policy in the second half of the year.The bank urged maintaining the continuity and stability of monetary policies while making them more targeted and flexible, according to a statement on the bank's website after a meeting with branch presidents.It also urged adhering to the policy of striking a balance between keeping stable and relatively fast economic growth, adjusting the economic structure and managing inflation expectations.It asked its branches to stick to its annual lending target while maintaining market liquidity at a reasonable level.Housing loan policies should be strictly implemented to ensure the stable and healthy development of China's real estate market, the statement said.h China's monetary policy should be more proactive, targeted and effective, the statement added.The central bank has set a target to keep the country's new bank lending to below 7.5-trillion-yuan (1.1 trillion U.S. dollars) in 2010.In the first half of the year, China's new yuan-denominated lending hit 4.63 trillion yuan, down 2.74 trillion yuan from the same period last year.

BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- China's exports surged by 48.5 percent year on year in May, while the imports climbed 48.3 percent, the General Administration of Customs (GAC) announced Thursday.The growth rate for exports was 18.1 percentage points up from the figure for April, and the import growth rate dipped slightly from 49.7 percent reported in April.Exports totalled 131.76 billion U.S. dollars in May, said a statement on the GAS website, adding imports topped 112.23 billion U.S. dollars.Total foreign trade value rose 48.4 percent from a year earlier to 243.99 billion U.S. dollars in May. TAIYUAN/HARBIN, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- The death toll in an explosion at a coal mine in Linfen City of north China's Shanxi Province early Saturday has risen to 17 after another two bodies were found, local authorities said.The blast at Liugou Coal Mine of Yicheng County also left 104 persons injured, seven of them seriously, as of 11 p.m. Saturday, said Wang Jianshe, head of the county's People's Hospital, where all the injured were admitted.All the injured are in stable condition, Wang said.Basic search and rescue work is over, said a senior official of Yangquan Coal Industry (Group) Co. Ltd, which owns the mine. The official said that the blast took place in the dormitory area, where most of buildings were destroyed by the powerful explosion.A miner surnamed Zhang told Xinhua that families of many miners had come to live here because the children were currently on their summer vacation.But officials so far have not disclosed how many children and women had died during the accident.Zhang said he saw a couple died after huge stones fell on them in a dormitory room.Initial investigation showed that the blast was caused by explosives hidden illegally in the area, and a suspect has been detained by the police, the official said.A further Investigation into the cause of the blast is underway.Also on Saturday, 24 people were trapped in a flooded coal mine in northeast China's Jixi City, Heilongjiang Province.The city government said the accident at Hengxinyuan Mine took place at around 5 p.m. Saturday.
