Northwestern University in the Chicago suburb of Evanston was under a lockdown order for nearly an hour after reports came in Wednesday afternoon of a person on campus with a gun and shots fired. It turns out that the whole incident was a hoax. According to ABC News, an Evanston Police official said that the report was a swatting incident. The emergency call to police claiming there was a gunman on Northwestern's campus came from out of state.  Swatting pranks have been taking place in recent years involving a call to police prompting a SWAT unit to respond to a person's home. The prank sometimes end up being deadly. In December, a 28-year-old Kansas man was shot and killed by police after a prankster claimed the man was holding his family hostage after shooting his father. When police arrived, the man reached for a waistband, causing police to kill the man. It turns out he was unarmed, and the call came from 1,400 miles away. Northwestern University originally reported that a person with a gun was located near Engelhart Hall. Evanston Police said that several streets nearby were closed. After an initial search, Evanston Police said they could not find any victims, gunmen or crime scene. Students and employees were being told to seek shelter around 2:40 p.m. local time. An hour after the initial lockdown order, Northwestern said that only those in Englehart Hall remained in shelter. An all clear was given shortly after 4 p.m. local time.  1540

NORTH PARK, Calif. (KGTV) - Peking Restaurant, a staple of the North Park food scene for 88 years, will close in March of 2019.The owners made the announcement on their Facebook page earlier this month, saying it was time to retire."I'm going on 75 years old," co-owner Ken Fong told 10News. "It's time to enjoy my last few years."The Facebook post says "This decision did not come lightly to us as Pekin is such a special place in our hearts and we love what we do and all of you. A majority of our incredible staff here have been with us 25-40 years... and are ready for the next chapter of retirement and new endeavors."Fong says it's not just the owners who want to retire, but cooks and servers as well.Since word got out about the closure, the restaurant has been flooded with people who want one more meal at a place that became the go-to spot for Chinese food in the area."It's overwhelming," says Fong. "It's driving us nuts. Everyone is overworked."Fond adds that he doesn't mind the extra work, but he didn't expect this kind of reaction.In the wake of the extra crowds, the restaurant put up a sign warning customers that wait times may take longer than usual. They say they don't want to add capacity, so they can give customers the same level of service they've always had.People in the area say it's sad to see such a great place go away."This is something I've known my whole life. I'm going to miss it," says Barbara Sims. She used to come with her parents as a child. Now she brings her grandkids to the restaurant when they visit.Fong says he appreciates all the well wishes he's received in the past few weeks."They all want to come back and have one last memory," he says. "So, thank you."The restaurant will stay open through the Chinese New Year in February and then close in March.Fong says several people and real estate groups have looked into buying it, but he doesn't know if the new owners will keep the location as a Chinese food restaurant or open something new. 2001

New data shows that those who use Duolingo — a popular language app — can learn the equivalent of four semesters of university study. The app is free for all, and parents and teachers say it is a good supplement for students of all ages who are learning from home this fall.Averill, 10, is quite the Duolingo master. Her Spanish teacher recommended the app to pair with her in class lessons a few years back. Averill took that one step further.She's currently learning Korean. When she masters that, it will be her third language."My dad is Korean, and so my grandparents speak Korean," Averill said. "I'm trying to learn it because we're planning a trip to Korea to visit some relatives and I'm trying to learn it so I can speak to them a little bet,ter than I can right now."She likes to take what she's learned and practice on her grandparents. So far, she says, she's doing pretty well.Korean and Spanish are two of the 39 featured languages on Duolingo. This spring, when COVID-19 sent America into lockdown, new users flocked to the app. Dr. Cindy Blanco is a learning scientist at Duolingo."Our new users spiked 66%, which in any other time would be enormous but the spike continued the rest of the month," said Dr. Cindy Blanco, a learning scientist at Duolingo. "Our new user growth in March was 113%, which is unprecedented — kind of the word of the year."People were also downloading the app to keep their language skills sharp and because teachers needed help."The most important thing to not fall behind in a language course is to keep getting in front of that language," Blanco said.As a Doctor of Linguistics, Blanco is a Duolingo user herself. She's currently trying to keep up with her Russian. She's already well-versed in Spanish, French, Catalan, Italian and American Sign Language.Blanco says Duolingo offers all sorts of content, including lessons, short stories, podcasts, and seven a virtual language practicing event. Because Duolingo is app-based, it means users can access it from anywhere, anytime."It's more important than ever that we create products that can meet people where they are and where they are is at home with small handheld devices," Blanco said. "So, how can we get language learning literally in your hands?"It's also fun. The program moves away from textbooks and worksheets that many find monotonous, especially when it comes to language."We often associated language-learning with dry high school classes of textbooks and worksheets," Blanco said. NEW YORK, N.Y. – The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is calling for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to be dismantled.Specifically, the ACLU wants DHS to be broken apart into various federal agencies and to have its federal budget shrunk. The organization believes this will allow for more effective oversight, accountability and public transparency. Romero, called for the dismantling in an op-ed published by USA Today on Sunday.In the article, Romero argues that the actions of federal agents in Portland and other cities have shown that DHS isn’t capable of acting consistently with the U.S. Constitution.“The scenes unfolding in Portland, Oregon, and elsewhere are a reminder of the red flags many have raised about DHS throughout its history: that its powers are too great, and that it lacks the oversight and management to be effective,” wrote Romero. “We can preserve our freedoms and our security better by dismantling DHS and beginning anew.”DHS was established in 2002 in response to the attacks on September 11, 2001. The department says its mission is to secure the U.S. from the threats the nation faces.“This requires the dedication of more than 240,000 employees in jobs that range from aviation and border security to emergency response, from cybersecurity analyst to chemical facility inspector,” writes the department. “Our duties are wide-ranging, and our goal is clear - keeping America safe.”Romero says DHS’ short history has been filled with violence and fear mongering. NEW YORK CITY — A woman was seriously injured Monday night when a man unexpectedly pushed her into a train pulling into a Manhattan subway station, according to the NYPD.Police said the shoving happened around 9:30 p.m. at the West 4th Street-Washington Square subway station near Sixth Avenue in Greenwich Village.The 55-year-old woman was standing on the platform when the man suddenly pushed her into a moving train pulling into the station, officials said.The victim hit the side of the train and then fell back onto the platform, police said.She was rushed to a nearby hospital in serious condition.
