WASHINGTON, D.C. — A home test for COVID-19 will soon be on U.S. store shelves.The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Tuesday issued an emergency use authorization for the first kit that consumers can buy without a prescription to test themselves entirely at home.Regulators granted use for a similar home test last month, but it requires a doctor’s prescription.The new test kit from Australian company Ellume allows users to swab themselves and get the results at home in about 20 minutes.The test detects fragments of proteins of the coronavirus from a nasal swab sample from anyone 2 years old and up. It connect to a digital app to help users interpret the results.Similar to other antigen tests, the FDA says a small percentage of positive and negative results from this test may be false. Therefore, for patients without symptoms, positive results should be treated as presumptively positive until confirmed by another test as soon as possible.Individuals with positive results should self-isolate and seek additional care from their health care provider. Those who test negative and experience COVID-like symptoms should follow up with their health care provider as negative results do not preclude an individual from coronavirus infection.The company says it will have 3 million tests available next month.“The FDA strongly supports innovation in test development and we have worked tirelessly with test developers to support the shared goal of getting more accurate and reliable tests to Americans who need them. WASHINGTON, D.C. — Unlike in many parts of the world, Election Day in America isn’t a day most people get off from work or school, and it’s not for a lack of trying in the past.“There've been several efforts to make it a holiday, at least for the five previous Congresses, including this one,” said Matthew Weil, who runs The Elections Project at the Bipartisan Policy Center.Those proposed bills to make Election Day a federal holiday have gone nowhere though.Coincidentally, America also has one of the lowest voter participation rates in the developed world, which was about 56 percent in 2016.Over the years, though, some states have made it a state or civic holiday, most recently this year in Illinois and Virginia. In California, state law requires employers to give employees at least two paid hours to vote on Election Day. However, that’s not the case in most places.Weil said whether or not employers need to give you time to vote on Election Day, varies state by state.“In states that don't have robust voting by mail options, or early voting options, Election Day being the only option isn't good,” Weil said. “The good news is the trend has been toward expanding options over the past 10 years.”Those options include early voting, which millions of voters have already done in the 2020 election, including Kevin Jackson in Ohio.“Don’t just wait. Plan your vote,” Jackson said. “Get down here and get it done.”The key to moving forward, experts say, is for all states to offer as many opportunities to vote as possible. It's a massive, sugary replica of the entire National Mall.The pastry creation — featured at Monday's unveiling of the White House holiday decorations — required 225 pounds of dough, 25 pounds of chocolate and 20 pounds of white icing. It includes replicas of the Capitol, the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials, the Washington Monument and the White House, complete with tiny green wreaths with red ribbons on each window.White House pastry chefs have created gingerbread houses during the holidays since the early 1970s. The first one depicted a Christmas village. Another was a replica of President Bill Clinton's boyhood home in Arkansas."American Treasures" is the theme of this year's White House holiday decor, designed by first lady Melania Trump, who tweeted a video showing her walking amid the display. Decorations in the ornate East Room are meant to highlight the diversity and ingenuity of American architecture.Four custom-made mantelpieces feature the skylines of New York, St. Louis, Chicago and San Francisco. WASHINGTON, D.C. — A man was shot after attempting to break into the WTTG television station, employees there tweeted Monday afternoon.A security guard allegedly fired the shot at the suspect, according to a report by the station.The intruder survived and the incident is under investigation. There is no report on why the attempted break-in occurred or how the man may be connected to the station.WTTG-TV reported that the suspect was identified as George Odemns of Northwest D.C. He has previously sent emails to employees of the station, WTTG said. WTTG said that Odemns was shot after forcing his way through the glass doors, which was captured on video from inside and outside of the entrance to the lobby area.  765
