KERNVILLE, Calif. About 45 miles to the west of the quake's epicenter, San Diegan Jose Blanco was watching television on the couch in his parents' home. His three children were playing outside."Banging, jolting, up and down ... eyes were shaking. Just seemed surreal," said Blanco.Blanco says he jumped off the couch and then froze, trying to wait out the shaking."Wow, is this really happening? Just shocked ... Seemed like a good minute. Seemed like forever," said Blanco. When the home finally stopped moving, Blanco ran to his children and found them safe. A few things fell and a few cabinet doors opened, but there was no major damage. In the first few hours after the quake, he felt more than 10 aftershocks. He and his family may not get much sleep."Wondering if there's going to be more, if it's going to keep going," said Blanco.Getting back to San Diego is another concern. A crack that appeared on one of the nearby Highway 178 has been repaired, but Blanco wary of getting on the road. 1005

KENOSHA, Wis. (AP) — The lawyer for the Kenosha police officer who shot Jacob Blake seven times in the back says his client told investigators he thought Blake was trying to abduct one of his own children. Brendan Matthews, the attorney for Officer Rusten Sheskey, told CNN that Sheskey also said Blake was holding a knife as he leaned into the SUV on Aug. 23 and that he opened fire because Blake “twisted his body toward” him. The Kenosha News reports that Blake's uncle, Justin Blake, said Saturday that the claim Blake was trying to kidnap his own child is "Gaslighting. Outright lies.” The shooting sparked nights of protests and unrest. Sheskey and the other officers at the scene were placed on leave. 716

Justice Brett Kavanaugh, fresh off a confirmation process that featured one of the most polarizing and politicized hearings in modern times, will take the bench on Tuesday for the start of a new era that is expected to take the court decidedly to the right."I was not appointed to serve one party or one interest, but to serve one nation," Kavanaugh said Monday night during his ceremonial swearing-in at the White House."America's Constitution and laws protect every person of every belief and every background," he said.Kavanaugh, 53, began work immediately after his official swearing-in on Saturday evening even as protesters stormed the front steps of the Supreme Court and pounded on the 13-ton bronze doors, furious that he had been confirmed despite a decades-old allegation of sexual assault brought by Christine Blasey Ford. 842

Jennifer Lopez knows first-hand what it feels like when a man in power tries to take advantage of you in Hollywood.Lopez, a vocal advocate for the Time's Up movement as Hollywood and other industries crack down on sexual harassment, shared her story in a new interview with Harper's Bazaar."I haven't been abused in the way some women have. But have I been told by a director to take off my shirt and show my boobs? Yes, I have," she told the magazine. "But did I do it? No, I did not."Lopez recalled being "terrfied" when she stood up to her harasser."I remember my heart beating out of my chest, thinking, 'What did I do? This man is hiring me!'" she said. 671

Just after Secretary of State Rex Tillerson's sudden firing Tuesday morning, American diplomats at posts spanning the globe were then increasingly surprised -- and in some cases disturbed -- to receive guidance from Washington telling them not to post or retweet the statement from Undersecretary of State Steve Goldstein on how Tillerson was fired by President Donald Trump, according to multiple diplomats who spoke to CNN about the guidance.Goldstein, part of Tillerson's tight inner circle of aides, had released a statement to the press and then tweeted words that he says came from Tillerson himself on his firing: "The secretary did not speak to the President this morning and is unaware of the reason, but he is grateful for the opportunity to serve, and still believes strongly that public service is a noble calling and not to be regretted." 859
