Amazon has purchased the naming rights to a Seattle arena that will soon house an NHL franchise. But unlike most naming rights deals, Amazon will not be putting its name on the building.Instead, the company says the arena will be named "Climate Pledge Arena" — a name inspired by Amazon's recent billion pledge to fight climate change.The building, formerly known as Seattle Center Coliseum and KeyArena (among other names), initially opened in 1962 and was the longtime home of the NBA's Seattle SuperSonics until the team left for Oklahoma City in 2008. The building has also served as the home for the WNBA's Seattle Storm.In December 2017, Seattle's City Council approved a plan to renovate the arena, hoping to attract new NBA and NHL franchises to the city. Months later, the NHL announced it had granted Seattle an expansion franchise that would start play in the 2021-22 season.It's common practice for sports teams and municipalities to sell naming rights to local stadiums to companies for advertising purposes. But Amazon won't be using the Seattle arena for advertising.Instead, the name "Climate Pledge" will highlight the arena's innovative amenities designed to combat climate change. A woman accused of mailing poison to President Donald Trump sent six similar letters to prison officials in Texas, according to court documents obtained by Scripps station WKBW in Buffalo, New York.Pascale Ferrier was arrested Sunday on the Peace Bridge — the bridge over Lake Erie that connects the U.S. and Canada at Buffalo, New York. Pascale, who was reportedly in possession of a gun and a knife, was charged with threatening the President of the United States.Ferrier's arrest came a day after the FBI announced it was investigating a suspicious letter addressed to Trump that contained ricin, a poison found naturally in castor seeds.According to an arrest warrant obtained Tuesday, Ferrier's referred to Trump in her letter as "The Ugly Tyrant Clown," and called for him to resign."You ruin USA and lead them to disaster. I have US cousins, then I don't want the next 4 years with you as president. Give up and remove your application for this election," she allegedly wrote.Ferrier's letter also referred to a "special gift" included in the envelope."This gift is in this letter," she allegedly wrote. " If it doesn't work, I'll find better recipe for another poison, or I might use my gun when I'll be able to come. Enjoy! FREE REBEL SPIRIT."According to an affidavit, the letters found in Texas also included a powdery substance, references to trying "another recipe" and also included the signature "FREE REBEL SPIRIT." Fingerprints taken from the letters match Ferrier's prints on file, according to court paperwork.The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are also investigating the incident. Monday, CTV News in Canada reported that they conducted an operation in St-Hubert, which is south of Montreal, Quebec.Ferrier is due in Federal Court in downtown Buffalo on Tuesday afternoon. 1799

A student at Monroe Middle School in Michigan is facing possible charges after bringing an inactive grenade to school and threatening to "blow up the school."Police were called to the school after the student showed the device to other students and made the threatening statements. Later interviews determined that he has shown it to others multiple times during the day.A school resources officer searched the student's locker and located the grenade. He noticed that it had been modified to make it incapable of detonating.Further inspection confirmed the device was not capable of exploding and did not pose a threat to anyone.The student was removed from class and taken into custody. He has been placed in the Monroe County Youth center for possession of a device that is represented as an explosive or bomb.Anyone with information in this case is asked to call the Monroe Police Department. 919

Access to city and county beaches will be limited for the Fourth of July weekend because of the statewide and local spike in COVID-19 cases.An order banning vehicular access to Nueces County bay and gulf beaches goes into effect Friday morning at 6 a.m. and ends at 6 a.m. July 7.The restrictions also include golf carts and all-terrain vehicles.What the order does not address is where the thousands of beach visitors expected this holiday weekend will be able to park.With beaches limited to pedestrians only, parking places will be at a premium because once they’re gone, you’re going to have to walk.Just a few weeks ago, local officials expected thousands of tourists flocking to Padre Island and packed beaches, similar to what we saw Memorial Day weekend.“You could have driven that beach and you weren’t going to find a space to get in on the beach,” said Director of Coastal Parks Scott Cross.Nueces County tried a similar plan over Easter weekend, with mixed results.“Easter weekend when we closed it down, it proved to us that the honor system is not going to work with these cables and barricades,” said Cross.This weekend, the county will keep vehicles out by blocking access roads with giant sand berms. While public parking near the beach is limited, local leaders aren’t worried.“We don’t expect traffic volumes to be where we thought they would be about two weeks ago,” said Corpus Christi City Manager Peter Zanoni.Even though Corpus Christi is a tourist destination, Zanoni believes now is not the time for out-of-town visitors.“We have a crisis going on here in our county; we’re one of the fastest-growing areas in terms of new COVID cases every day,” said Zanoni.City and county leaders worked closely to get beach orders out as early as possible to give potential visitors plenty of notice.“Hopefully people will hear the warnings, hear the advice,” said Zanoni. “If they do make it here it’s going to be a tough walk from anywhere on the island to the beach, I’m not sure that will be in their best interests.”“It’s really important that we do this for the safety of the people living here and the safety of people visiting here,” added Cross.KRIS' Greg Chandler first reported this story. 2221
