SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Association of Governments released a report Wednesday showing that bicycle ridership in the county is up more than 40% from 2019, since the statewide stay-at-home order due to COVID-19.Since the start of the order, SANDAG has tracked data to understand how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted travel in the San Diego region.The data show that with more people staying closer to home, the choice to use alternative transportation for shorter trips, including outdoor opportunities for recreational and fitness activities, continues to increase.The report, titled "Bike Riding in the San Diego Region Since COVID- 19," examines bike volumes on eight corridors around San Diego County between mid-March and mid-August 2020, compared to the same period in 2019. The report also shares biking insights from residents and their plans to continue riding.From April 18 to May 17 -- "Month 2" in SANDAG's data set -- bicycle traffic was up a whopping 66% from 2019, with Month 3 just behind at 62%. As the weather began to heat up and more people headed back to work in their vehicles, the numbers dropped considerably in months 4 and 5, with bicycle traffic volume up 28% and 22% from the previous year.Since 2012, SANDAG has monitored bike travel through counters on the regional bikeway network that measure change in bike volumes over time with continuous counts collected and transmitted every 15 minutes.Since the start of the stay-at-home order, daily volumes increased an average of 42% across the network during the five months in 2020, compared to the same time in 2019.Additionally, biking volumes were up the most on weekends over the five-month period at 53%, compared to weekdays at 35%. Individual corridor increases ranged from 12% on the Landis Street corridor to 62% on the Inland Rail Trail and Mission Road corridor. A total of 84% of residents surveyed who said they were biking more since the pandemic began said they expect to continue biking even when restrictions are lifted.In light of the current public health crisis and in recognition of National Bike Month in May, SANDAG created a new pilot program to support local jurisdictions by giving them the opportunity to designate temporary roadway modifications that create safe spaces for people to bike, walk, run, scoot, use a wheelchair and move during the pandemic.SANDAG awarded 11 jurisdictions funds to help implement temporary Shared Streets pilot projects. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County will have enough water for 2019 in spite of low rainfall and high temperatures over the past year, the San Diego County Water Authority announced today.Rainfall during the 2018 water year, which ran from Oct. 1, 2017, to Sept. 30, totaled slightly more than three inches at San Diego International Airport, the county's precipitation measurement site. SDCWA officials say that's 67 percent lower than usual and the county's second-lowest annual rainfall total since 1850.Despite the scant amount of rain, the Water Authority expects that increased water-use efficiency and many water supply facilities will keep the county well-stocked with water for the immediate future. The Carlsbad Desalination plant produces roughly 50 million gallons of safe and drinkable water per day and the San Vicente Dam currently holds about 100,000 acre-feet of water after the Water Authority took action to conserve water resources because of recent droughts.One acre-foot of water, roughly 325,900 gallons, can supply two four-person households for a year, according to the agency."It has been very hot and dry, but we have invested wisely in infrastructure, and regional water use remains well below where it was at the start of the last drought," said Jeff Stephenson, the Water Authority's principal water resources specialist. "In fact, potable water use over the past three-plus years was 17 percent below 2013, which shows that San Diego continues to live WaterSmart."San Diego County currently has "severe drought" conditions, according to a regional classification by the U.S. Drought Monitor, but the investment of more than .5 billion over the last 30 years for local water infrastructure improvements has paid off, according to the SDCWA.Along with that investment and hedging against future droughts, the county is expected to see more rainfall in the coming months, Stephenson said."We are looking for a wet winter locally, and in the Sierra and Rocky Mountains, to help replenish reserves for future years," he said. 2060

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County arson investigators were called to the scene of a commercial structure fire today in Spring Valley, authorities said.The fire began at 8:02 a.m. at a structure in the 300 block of Elkelton Place, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department reported.The fire was put out by San Miguel Fire District firefighters shortly afterward. The fire was isolated to the commercial structure, sheriff's officials said.No injuries were reported. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego lifeguards reported that although about 155,000 beachgoers hit San Diego beaches Saturday and Sunday, the number of rescues and medical assists made by lifeguards was not excessive going into the third day of the Labor Day weekend.``On Saturday there were about 120,000 people on the beaches, and on Sunday there were about 135,000 people,'' said San Diego Lifeguard Lt. Andy Lerum. ``We did about 2,000 preventative acts each day.'' Lerum said the number of rescues made both days was relatively light.`We made 15 rescues on Saturday, and 42 rescues on Sunday, mostly because the ocean has been pretty calm,'' he said. `We had more medical aids, 40 on Saturday and 35 on Sunday. We're going to probably have more than that for Labor Day, but the final figures are not yet in.''`The bulk of what we've been doing on the beaches has been taking care of sick and injured people,'' said Lerum. ''We also had a flurry of kayak rescues, About five kayaks tipped over into the ocean. We rescued those kayaks. Everybody is fine.''There was lots of boating activity over the holiday weekend.Lerum said a person fell from either Ocean Beach Pier or the seawall there about 5:30 p.m. on Labor Day. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The discovery of an unidentified and potentially suspicious object on the grounds of Lindbergh Field Monday prompted the evacuation of a non-public operations structure until a bomb squad determined that there was no safety hazard.The security measures at the Delta Cargo building on the southeast side of the bayside international airport began about 1:30 p.m., San Diego Harbor Police Lt. Victor Banuelos said.Officials cleared all workers out of the Airlane Road facility and called in the Metro Arson Strike Team, which determined that the object was harmless.
