More children have been diagnosed with acute flaccid myelitis, the polio-like paralyzing illness, according to numbers released Monday by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.There have now been 106 confirmed cases of AFM in 29 states this year, according to the CDC, an increase of 16 since last week.There are also 167 possible cases of the illness, an increase of five from the previous week.Since 2014, there have been 430 confirmed cases of the rare disease, and 90% have been children, according to the CDC.AFM is a rare illness that affects the nervous system, especially the gray matter in the spinal cord, and causes muscle weakness and sudden onset of paralysis. There's a spectrum of how children can be affected: Some regain the use of their paralyzed limbs, while others are paralyzed from the neck down and can breathe only with the help of a ventilator.There is no cure and no vaccine.There is also no known cause. Although several neurologists who serve as advisers to the CDC say they feel sure that an enterovirus -- the same family of viruses that cause polio -- is most likely to blame, the CDC says it's still casting a net wide.The CDC's Dr. Nancy Messonnier said last week that the agency is considering the possibility that an infectious pathogen is causing AFM but added that "we're broadening our hypotheses."When asked whether a toxin or vaccines could be triggering AFM, Messonnier, director of the National Center for Immuniziation and Respiratory Diseases, replied that "we're not ruling anything out at this point."About three to 10 days before becoming paralyzed, nearly all children who developed AFM experienced a viral illness with symptoms such as fever and cough, the CDC reported last week.Viral illnesses are very common among children, and so it's not clear why only a relatively small number develop AFM. (KGTV) - After five years of delays and construction, the Plunge Pool in Mission Beach is scheduled to re-open on June 1."There was a lot of I's to dot and T's to cross with this thing, so we've taken our time," explains Belmont Park General Manager Steve Thomas. "We've invested the capital to make sure that things are where we want them to be. It feels good to be involved in a project like that."In addition to rebuilding the pool, the new Plunge will include a state of the art fitness center, run by Fit Athletic Club.The pool, which opened in 1925, closed in 2014 in dire need of repairs. That process didn't begin until January of 2017 because of issues with the Coastal Commission and other government entities.Throughout construction, people in Mission Beach have been wondering when it will reopen while reminiscing of their time spent in the old Plunge."Our kids, we used to bring them here when they were little," says Sharon Delgadillo. She and her husband Henry walk by the Plunge while they exercise in Mission Beach and have stopped frequently to check on its progress. "It will be awesome that another generation can enjoy this pool too.""It's a piece of our history," says Mission Beach Town Council President Matthew Gardner. He says the management from Belmont Park and the Fit Athletic Club has done an excellent job at providing updates to the council at their monthly meetings. He was thrilled to hear they have an opening date set for June 1st."You better believe I'll be first in line to get a membership for the pool," says Gardner.The Fit is already selling memberships to the Club, which will include pool access. A manager says they're offering a /month special through the end of March.Meanwhile, Belmont Park management says the pool will have its own membership that people can buy if they don't want the full athletic club experience. Those will be sold as monthly or daily passes. Belmont Park is still working out the price points for that.Business owners around Mission Beach and Belmont Park also feel the pool will be a catalyst for more economic growth in the area. Gardner owns a beach rental store next to the pool and says he's already seen an increase of customers who ask about the pool."I built my rental shop where it is because of how much effort they put into the pool," he says.Belmont Park officials say the unique mix of a large pool near the beach will bring in locals and tourists."It's going to be right up there next to Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo," says Thomas of how popular he thinks the Plunge will be when it re-opens. MURRAY, Utah – Dr. Todd Vento has spent most of his professional life preparing for the worst-case scenario.“I still have a lot of connections because of things I’ve done in the past,” said Dr. Vento while sitting in the lobby of Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Utah.He is an infectious disease specialist who previously worked for the Department of Defense, managing the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.He’s since been recruited to fight on the COVID-19 front lines.“When you prepare and constantly live in that world of preparing for a true threat, you do expect that this could happen,” Vento said.In video provided by Intermountain Healthcare and University of Utah Health, you can see states in the Mountain West are reaching a critical tipping point.The talk of moving to a crisis level of care is imminent.One example, the Utah Hospital Association is reporting double the numbers of COVID-19 patients in hospitals from two weeks ago, and five times the number of patients from two months ago.So, what happens at hospitals when numbers surge? The process of load leveling happens first.“(Load leveling is) balancing out where the patients are so you don’t have one facility that might have 110% of capacity, while another facility is at 70%,” Vento said.A patient management system called “Care Traffic Control” covers seven westerns states. Like other systems in the country, it tells first responders where they can take patients.Next comes contingency care.“That contingency plan might be that we need to take care of more COVID-19 patients, so that means we convert another hospital that takes care of non-COVID-19 patients,” Vento explained.Part of the contingency plan also means canceling noncritical surgeries.Finally, there are crisis levels of care.“The concept of the term, crisis standards of care really gets down to a similar concept used in combat and the military,” Vento said. “I know that may sound harsh, but it’s really about the triage process.”That means doctors will be forced to make tough decisions about who gets care and what that will look like.As many states smash records of COVID-19 cases, health care workers are being stretched thin and asking for help.“It’s up to us to allow all our livelihoods to continue,” Vento said. 2276
