This year has been incredibly rough for most Americans. This week, former First Lady Michelle Obama said she’s suffering from a “low-grade depression” because of stress from the pandemic, race relations and social justice in the US and the political strife surrounding it all, she says."I'm waking up in the middle of the night because I'm worrying about something or there's a heaviness," Obama said in her "The Michelle Obama Podcast" on Wednesday. "I try to make sure I get a workout in, although there have been periods throughout this quarantine, where I just have felt too low."Obama’s podcast launched at the end of July, her episode on Wednesday was about “Protests and the Pandemic.” She told her guest she has not always felt like getting on the treadmill or waking up at a regular time each morning.“You know, it's a direct result of just being out of, out of body, out of mind. And spiritually, these are not, they are not fulfilling times, spiritually. You know, so I, I know that I am dealing with some form of low-grade depression. Not just because of the quarantine, but because of the racial strife, and just seeing this administration, watching the hypocrisy of it, day in and day out, is dispiriting,” Obama said on her podcast. She then talked about how her family has tried to keep a schedule, to stop what they are doing at 5 p.m. each day and come together to “do an activity” before getting dinner and ready and sitting down as a family.Covid-19 fatigue and a feeling of being overwhelmed is really common right now. Doctors encourage people to try little regular activities, i.e. go for a walk, sit down and have a meal, etc., to feel more in control. 1683

This time of year, inboxes are flooded with holiday deals and promotions, as well as phishing emails and texts that claim to have information on online orders and deliveries.“It might be your item is delayed that’s going to cause alarm. Or, it’s on its way that causes hope. So, we have a tendency to want to look at this information,” said Angie Barnett, president & CEO with the Better Business Bureau serving greater Maryland. When consumers click on the links, they’re asked for personal information, or malware capturing keystrokes and password information could be downloaded onto the device. An easy way to avoid being tricked is to keep a folder in your inbox just for emails containing order and tracking information.“Move it over there, and if you get a notification of shipping that tells you your order’s delayed or something, verify did you really order something that’s going to be delivered from that particular shipping handling entity? And verify that it is true and look at the tracking numbers that’s critical,” Barnett said.Other giveaways include poor grammar or spelling errors. If you receive one of these emails, you can forward it to USPS, Amazon, or UPS to investigate. This story was originally published by Mallory Sofastaii at WMAR. 1269

This year's pandemic could have a long-term impact on our country's healthcare system. The crisis is inspiring a new generation of health care professionals."Growing up, I was always pretty interested in science. I have a few family members who are in medicine and nursing," said University of Colorado fourth-year medical student Lauren Heery. "Helping people through my direct knowledge as a scientist, and now as a medical student, was I think what interested me the most."She, like many medical students across the country, has found herself in a unique situation because of the pandemic."As all of the COVID things happened, as medical students, we’re not able to continue with our clinical rotation, just given the increased risk to us, the patients, and limited supplies that needed to be prioritized for staff," said Heery. So, she shifted gears and ultimately made the decision to spend a year researching the virus."I got involved with a few projects with the infectious disease division at University Hospital, as I was sitting on my hands waiting to get back into the clinical setting," said Heery. One of those projects is looking at the racial and ethnic disparities in the disease."Coronavirus kind of came together with a lot of my interests that I had been kind of working on. But the pandemic really fueled me to do something a little bit different and try to help figure things out," said Heery. With thousands of medical students having to change their plans, Heery is not alone. But because of the pandemic, she says she has a renewed appreciation for her chosen field."Just hearing the frontline stories from the people who I know who have been working in the hospital during this time, just has made me so grateful that I am going into this profession," said Heery. 1793
