SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A global recruitment company tells 10News there is a concern that the healthcare system is going to be over-run by patients.It brings up questions whether San Diego County has enough nurses to staff hospitals and medical centers if the coronavirus pandemic goes on for an extended period."The problem that we're seeing now, post-pandemic and coronavirus, is that those nurses can't flock to any one area to support people because the problem is, they have to support locally where they are," said Jon Griffith with the recruitment company GQR. Griffith explained there were supply and demand issues with nurses before COVID-19. Now travel nurses, who would typically fill the void are needed in every state, and not necessarily available to travel."We're seeing people called out of retirement," he said. "Nurses and physicians alike being requested to come out and support. Essentially what we're trying to do at GQR is to tap into those resources or new grad nurses, retired nurses, wherever we can to give that local support to these hospitals to try and mitigate that risk."Griffith told 10News the hospitals they've spoken with are aware of potential challenges and are gearing up to make sure people have their healthcare needs met."They are heroes alright," Griffith said. "We see this all on social media. They are on the frontlines still giving great patient care and focusing on that continuity of care and that right there is what this is all about. But nurses have that fear of being understaffed and hospitals are really trying to rise to that challenge right now."10News asked healthcare providers across San Diego County how they will maintain staffing levels as nurses get sick or burned out, and if they have enough staff to backfill any vacancies.Here are the responses we got back.Sharp Healthcare:Yes, definitely a consideration given the unknowns around how long the COVID-19 outbreak will last. Because elective and non-emergent procedures are canceled, that frees up personnel who may be needed to backfill in other areas.UC San Diego HealthYes, we have a comprehensive plan for staffing our hospitals and clinics throughout the pandemic. In addition to a workforce of more than 2,900 nurses, we have access to additional nurse travelers and registry nurses to quickly flex up as needed. Our operational command centers monitor all personnel needs and deploy caregivers and resources across our health system in real time. Kaiser PermanenteWe are working with our public health partners to manage all aspects of the health care delivery continuum, and so far, our plans are working even as conditions, needs and priorities change. As we do every flu season, we have contingency plans in place to manage both higher numbers of patients in our facilities and illness among staff. Out of extreme caution as we respond to the challenge of coronavirus, employees who may have been exposed to the virus will remain at home for a 14-day observation period. We are able to manage this in part with fully licensed or certified seasonal contract staff. And because we are a fully integrated health care system, we have the ability to move staff from one facility to another and to adjust work schedules as needs dictate. We appreciate the flexibility and willingness to help among all of our team members.Scripps HealthScripps Health is currently recruiting for registered nurses and other key patient care roles as the impact of COVID-19 continues to play out. We have extended all current agency and traveler contracts through the end of May to ensure we have consistent coverage. Our Employee Assistance Program continues to work with our caregivers to help manage stress and burnout, such as mindfulness-based stress reduction sessions.In a sign of our commitment to the safety of our employees and patients, we have shifted our interview processes to be completely virtual so that applicants are not coming on our campuses. Also, our new employee orientation is now being conducted online so that we can minimize group sizes and practice social distancing where possible for caregivers.Do we have enough nurses currently to back fill the vacancies we expect?We are focused on protecting our workforce so they can safely treat our patients. We continue to recruit high-caliber candidates in the roles we anticipate needing and fast track the rehire process for those wanting to return to Scripps. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A big rig tipped over in North County Tuesday afternoon, spilling debris onto the road and forcing a hazmat team into action. According to authorities, the truck tipped over near eastbound SR-78 at Vista Village Drive just before noon. The incident caused house demolition debris and diesel from the big rig to spill all over the road. In total, about 30 gallons of diesel spilled onto the road. Crews used dirt and kitten litter to clean up the fuel. Firefighters, CHP, deputies and hazmat crews all responded to the scene. The incident caused the hours-long closure of the Vista Village overpass. At this time, it's unclear what caused the truck to tip over. The driver was uninjured.  750

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 56-year-old reportedly stabbed his neighbor after the man tried to shoot him with what he believed to be a rifle late Friday night, police say.According to police, the incident happened on the 4400 block of Bermuda Avenue around 10:30 p.m. after a 56-year-old walked to his neighbor’s house to tell him there was water flowing into his yard.When the neighbor, a 50-year-old man, answered the door he was armed with what appeared to be a rifle but later turned out to be a BB gun. As the man shot the gun, his neighbor was able to bush the barrel of the weapon up to avoid being shot.As the man tried to reload, his neighbor pulled out a pocket knife and stabbed his neighbor several times “because he thought he was going to get shot,” police said.Both men returned to their homes and called police. The stabbing victim was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. It’s unclear if any arrests will be made in the case. 965

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A college student from San Diego is in custody Monday, accused of threatening to open fire on a school campus. Last week, a person posted a screenshot of what investigators believe is a text conversation with Trevor Faison in which he sent a message threatening to “shoot up the school.” Exactly which school he was referring to was initially unclear. According to Chief Joseph Ramos at the San Diego Community College District, Faison had been a student at Mesa College last semester but was no longer enrolled. Ramos said Faison is currently attending Saddleback College in Orange County. According to Gerry Braun, a spokesperson for the San Diego City Attorney's Office, police eventually "determined the criminal threat was made against an individual at La Jolla High School."RELATED: Team 10: The City Attorney's office effort to obtain gun violence restraining ordersBraun added, "there is another pending case in Orange County with similar circumstances." Chief Ramos said there was no immediate threat to Mesa College adding, however, “whether it’s serious or not, the fact that he mentioned an attack is serious to us.”The San Diego Police Department filed a gun violence restraining order Dec. 11. Although Faison had no guns registered in his name, officers were concerned he might have other weapons.According to Braun, he was served with the GVRO when he was booked into jail Monday afternoon on a felony count of criminal threat.He is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday for his arraignment and has a hearing scheduled for Dec. 31 for the GVRO. 1591

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A former San Diego Sheriff's Department Captain accused of operating an illegal firearms trafficking business was arrested Friday.Former SDSO Capt. Marco Garmo is accused of operating the illegal firearms trafficking business, at times from his office at Rancho San Diego Station, authorities say. The indictment also accuses a fellow Sheriff's deputy, Lt. Fred Magana, prominent San Diego jeweler Leo Hamel, firearms dealer Giovanni Tilotta, and El Cajon resident Waiel Anton with aiding the Captain's business.Officials say Garmo was operating the illegal business during his entire tenure as Captain at the Rancho San Diego Station. The 27-year veteran of the department, who retired in September, is accused of beginning the business for profit and to gain future donors for an anticipated campaign for San Diego County Sheriff.RELATED: San Diego Sheriff's captain on leave during criminal investigationFriday morning, Magana and Hamel both plead guilty to charges including engaging in the business of dealing in firearms without a license, false statement in acquisition of a firearm, and conducting firearms transaction in violation of state law.Both admitted to aiding Garmo's business by making "straw purchases" of firearms, or purchases of firearms on behalf of someone else. The pair also admitted to creating false records to conceal those purchases, and offering to promote Garmo's weapons. As part of his plea, Hamel admitted to buying a variety of handguns from Garmo and making purchases in which Garmo would falsely report that he had acquired the guns for himself, not Hamel. The local jeweler also admitted to acquiring several firearms from Garmo without proper documentation and planning a false paper trail.Hamel must forfeit more than 200 firearms and 100,000 rounds of ammunition seized during a February 2019 raid.RELATED: FBI, ATF raid home, businesses of prominent San Diego jeweler Leo HamelMagana admitted to straw purchasing a pair of "off-roster" firearms, which are guns made available for law enforcement but not the public, for Hamel at Garmo's direction and advertising Garmo's firearms to potential customers.Officials say Anton helped buyers apply for concealed carry permits as part of his "consulting" business and received money to give buyers early appointments and avoid the backlog of other applicants. Anton is charged with also giving "kickbacks" to Garmo for referrals.Investigators accuse Tilotta, the owner of Honey Badger Firearms, with organizing Garmo's straw purchases and submitting false firearms records. Friday's indictment also accused Tilotta of selling and transferring guns inside Garmo's Rancho San Diego office.RELATED: Drug cartels recruiting children as young as 11 for smuggling, officials warnMany of Garmo's gun transactions included buying and reselling off roster handguns. While law enforcement officers are allowed to resell off roster guns in certain instances, Garmo was reportedly warned by the ATF that excessive resales for profit could violate federal law. Officials say Garmo acquired about 146 firearms between March 2013 and February 2019 and sold or transferred 104 of them.Investigators also accused Garmo of lying about tipping off a cousin, who was a partner in an illegal marijuana dispensary called Campo Greens, of an impending warrant search he had received for the business. The tip off allowed the business to clear any products or cash before authorities arrived.Sheriff Bill Gore said in a statement Friday that Garmo's actions do not represent the department:"In the spring of 2017, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department learned an employee was possibly involved in misconduct. Upon confirming the information and determining the misconduct potentially involved criminal activity, the Sheriff's Department requested an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The FBI and ATF conducted a thorough investigation and the United States Attorney's Office, Southern District of California, issued indictments on one current Sheriff's employee and one former employee. I want to thank our federal law enforcement partners for their diligence on this case, and I have the utmost confidence in the criminal justice system.Acts such as these are a violation of public trust and tarnish the reputation of law enforcement. I am disappointed by the actions of these two individuals, as they do not reflect the values of this department and its thousands of trustworthy, hard-working employees. The Sheriff's Department will not tolerate criminal behavior amongst its ranks and will hold its employees accountable for their actions."Magana and Hamel are out on bail and scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 21, 2020.Anton and Garmo are set to be arraigned Friday.
